I have been a mentor forever and one of the original helpers at NCI too and can say that anyone who likes helping others can find satisfaction in the official program or at NCI or anywhere else. It doesn't mattter. One advantage to being a Linden Mentor is that you have access to Orientation and Help Islands.

In the olden days we also stationed ourselves at the various Welcome Areas but have since been driven out by the overwhelming number of griefers but I still make an appearance there now and then.

I had the same problem, Meade. Just keep it simple and bland. "I'd make a good Mentor because I know a lot about SL and I never lose my temper." Or, "I've been teaching people how to use computer software for twenty years." Or something along those lines. Here are a few more...

I speak, read, and write fourteen languages, including Sanskrit.
I run a Daycare Center in Real Life.
I used to be the top Help Desk person at Microsoft.

Here are some that might disqualify you...

My name is JUMPMAN goddam LANE! U tards!
I am a land baroness who's looking for new renters.
I want to make sure the newbies learn and obey all the rules.
I want to show newbies that SL sex is evil and lead them to Christianity.
I want to show newbies how to enjoy SL sex.
I'll show the newbies how much better WoW is than Second Life.

That’s right, because I remember removing an apostrophe from a contraction to be exactly 500 characters ….and worrying about it.

/me grumbles and looks a little nervous.

It's been a week since I applied. I know that the approval process used to be months & months but thought I'd heard that it was much faster lately.

Is it still too soon to feel offended? :)

It's too soon... For me; it took a little over a month, and I just went through orientation this past weekend. I even made two new friends in the process. \(^_^)/

Now I'm waiting another week or two for my final acceptance and the tag should be official. I already hop around the welcome areas so I don't think I'll be needing to change my habits much... Except that I might start visiting OI once in a while. (^_^)

Let's see if I can be the change I want to see in the Vworld. (^_^)y

Perfect answer - somebody who got in recently. :)

Will there be some kind of notification or do I need to keep checking back on the web page occasionally to see if it's changed?

I got an Email with all the information I needed to get through orientation. And when I went inworld I was suddenly a member of the Apprentice Mentor group. (^_^)

Make sure you have a couple group slots open. Gladly, I was only in 10 at the time. (^_^)y

Just went to check on my application status and now see this...
From: someone
In our continuing effort to make the Second Life Volunteer program the finest in Second Life, we have adopted new processing steps for Apprentice mentors to advance from Apprentice to full Mentor. Recently, our application processing rate has dropped to accommodate these changes. Rather than let the application list grow at its present pace and force residents who desire to participate in the Volunteer program to wait weeks if not months to hear from us, we have decided to stop accepting applications until we have processed the list of residents currently in the pipeline. Thank you for your patience.

The Second Life Volunteer Team

...which I don't see as huge news. It is news, though (to me anyway).

Don't worry, the status page doesn't really seem to get updated for an application in process. And, yeah, they closed new applications for now while they're processing all the current ones. (^_^)

On that note, I got my IM yesterday so now I'm an official Mentor. I even spent an hour at an OI last night and guided a couple people through the tutorial HUD. \(^_^)/

I felt a certain amount of nostalgia of my first day in while I was watching them walk, run, jump, and fly. All the while ramming into everything and each other. I remember being much worse. (=_=)y

I think that its a testament to our community that so many want to help that there is a significant backlog. But a significant backlog speaks to scalability and resource issues. The apprentice program sounds like a great way of solving some of those issues.

I unfortunately didn't get an application in before things closed down. I would love to be a Mentor, I "mentor" now without a tag by being helpful, respectful of someone new, and patient. I have about 10 years of online community building experience going back to my days as a Compuserve forum admin...so I guess the role is just one that I have always enjoyed and have gravitated towards.

Until things open up for the Mentor program again I will just keep on helping. I appreciate the suggestion of having the welcome kit on hand to give out. There may be some other things you might suggest to hand out to a new resident - let's start a thread on that!

Linden team - I stand ready to assist. Just let me know when I can reapply again.

Aside:

I will always remember my first newbie experience when Hiro Pendragon took the time to teach me how to unpack the contents of a prim box to get the item that I had just purchased (and BTW my product boxes are all touch open to make it easy for new residents =D ). That first experience within an hour of becoming a resident is my "lasting impression" of SL as a friendly, helpful place.

After eagerly awaiting the date when I would be 6 months in-world and would be able to apply to the Mentor program, I was very disappointed to see that no new applications are being taken at this time ~sighs softly~

In the meantime, even though not in an "official" capacity, I will continue to help our newer residents in every way I can (gratefully remembering all those who welcomed and helped me when I first came to SL)...but I am wondering...is there any indication as to when the applications might be re-opened? Should I check back in a week...2 weeks...a month, etc?

Thank you for any help or advice :)

Wow, they closed applications? I guess I was lucky then-as of yesterday, I'm an official Mentor, too! (More power to strange deviant Mentors, heh! ;) )

Good job!!! Congratulations! \(^_^)/

Yeah, I think we're part of a bit of a backlog of mentor applications that are still being processed while the application page is closed. I think, anyone who was able to apply from something like a month ago or so is still being processed. Once they catch up, we'll see the V-Team application page open again. (^_^)y

Thats the way. Do what you can, when you can.

I have a friend inworld and that is what she did. Applications were closed earlier this year (March If I remember correctly)when her 6 months were up. So she just carried on helping people who asked her too, as best she could. Waited until applications re-opened and was invited to be and accepted as a Mentor virtually straight away.

Someone had noticed what she was doing in the months before and simply said she'll do.
