You know, Usagi, being rude to people to are volunteering their time to help new residents does not exactly reflect kindly on what a Mentor/Greeter is and the way we are expected to comport ourselves in-world. One can only wonder at how you treat "dumb questions" from the newbies you are "helping". There is a higher standard that is expected of Mentors/Greeters/Live Help in terms of behavior and how we treat others, those who cannot meet that standard should maybe not be in the voluteer programs....

Just sayin'.....

Pardon me Isablan But your wrong. I am a volunteering their time to help new residents as well. But posting this thought is just as bad as a flame about me. High stardards are suppose to be the issue, so this surprizes me you posted remark here. LOL I been part of this problem from the start. I know all about high standards I live by them. Greeters and mentors is a love for the game not a right that some think it is.

I agree with Islablan.

Your skill in misunderstanding the meaning of other people's posts astounds me.

As for the folks who applied to be a Mentor, sometimes it takes a loooong time. I applied and didn't hear from them for months. You should ask them about it if you're concerned and (hopefully) they'll reply :)

I am glad you have realized there is a problem. Together as Mentors and Greeters I am sure we can all join together to help you solve it.

usagi, this post was originally started to discuss the need for more mentors & greeters. since people are applying, and getting no response for long periods of time, i believe ziggy's comment does apply. it doesn't seem like ziggy is posting about "why" he/she has not been chosen as a greeter. if we do indeed need more greeters & mentors, than the question of application turnaround time does become an issue. we all want to help newcomers in SL, so let's find constructive ways to do that.

Back last August or September when Char was still in charge of the Mentor system, I joined.

Char visited the old WA rather often, she was prompt and often would come to investigate things herself if mentors paged her about any serious disurbances.

But nonetheless, after a while it was obvious that there was a simple, pure absense of respect in the WA from the non-new folk, for each other or for the new people. Trying to help people was nigh impossible through all the spam and sounds that had people cringing against the railings. Very often I got IMs from new folks saying it was "too scary here" due to the various sound clips, 'dead' bodies in pools of blood laying around and such. Eventually, I sensed it was pointless having to literally compete for newbies' attention when trying to help; Eventually in November or December, I quit.

Thinking back to then, it was actually amazingly TAME compared to today's WA. Now it's an incredible trash heap of bad behaviour, lewdness, and outright rule-breaking. The only posting of the rules is scribbled on the side of one of the four shelters and honestly, if no one points it out to you, you will NEVER see it. Not only that, but compared to the original Welcome Area Guidelines from November 2004, the new rules are terribly unwholesome in content and full of loopholes. I have a content of the original WA Guidelines from Lee Linden's dispensers for anyone that would like a copy. IM me inworld.

Now with the annoucement of a newbie island, I've re-applied to rejoin the Mentors. The prospect of a place to help the new folk without the rabble around is something I would have stuck around as a mentor /if/ it had existed before. So now that "Greeter Island" is going through, I will do what I can to be there. To educate, and prepare people for the world "out there".... which as it stands currently, includes a warning. :/

I agree, I only recently became a mentor, but I really can't stand to spend that much time in the WA, as much as I would love to help more. It's not the lag, or anything. It's near impossible to help someone over the cloud of sounds, particles, giant robots (not that they aren't cool) and pizza delivery boys.

Wait... scratch that last one... I like pizza.

Anyways, the point is that until there is a 'safe' zone, I believe many new players will not get the help they deserve.
