Do you use conference IM

I have made extensive use of the conference IM system. It has been a wonderful tool when running events so that the spellbound crew can keep in touch while working and add in the event participants... We need to have it or something like it in world I think...

I would love something like that as long as you make it easy to use! it's not too hard for some of us to get confused! ;)

An IM conference is started by context clicking on a folder with calling cards in it and selecting one of the 'Instant Message...' menu choices. We are working on a new instant message and friends system which could significantly alter this interface. I would like to know how much this feature is used.

Do you use the conference IM?

We absolutely do. We have the group chat for the core group but very often have to bring others in, kind of in a spur-of-the-moment conference, as it is.

Hopefully if IM is changed, a similar feature would replace this. Both group and conference IMs are needed, I think.

I'm so very new, so I don't really know anything, but I've been thinking for a while now about how nice it'd be to be able to have conference IMs. I'm very happy to know that you can actually do it, and I will probably be using this feature a lot from now on. My friends and I tend to gather at one place and just use chat to talk, but it's a pain when someone is stuck somewhere else and they have to miss the conversation going on. So, I think this is a really useful feature.

Yes I use IM conferencing. It has its perks and it has its downfalls. I don't overly like unsolicited spam to announce events that I could easily find on events menu and would attend them if I so desired. I do like them when talking to a group of people that have specifically chosen to participate in the conversation. I like the idea mentioned of an 'invite' to join a conference or not. (And please, don't send a message back to the person saying you declined it....should be my private choice whether I accept or decline a group IM). ALSO: when someone does a group IM and the closes it without saying anyhting, it spams the whole lot of people who are on tuned into that group that so and so has left this session. That is quite annoying. It should only be displayed if that person has acctually written something in the group IM session.

Thank you :)

Only time I've ever seen it used is when I get spammed by it.

I don't use it much, but I have a few folders set up for IM Conference. Actually, IRL I use the "chat features" of MSN/Yahoo/etc. very seldom - IMs are point-to-point things. Group IMs make more sense to me, but I understand the need to basically create an "ad-hoc group". In other words... I use it much less than I should :) but probably would use it more if it were easier to use.

The current system is awkward. I don't use it, but I don't have much need to anyway.

Short answer & short thoughts (for me)
02-05-2005 01:40
Yes.

In my experience, most folks don't know about this feature, nor how to accomplish the task.

Kinda like opening multiple Inventory windows to manage folders, one of those tricks those who know forget to tell those who don't.

Education by Osmosis, is it coming, and can it get here soon enough?

I'd like to be able to control-click names in my CC list and call them into conference.

But if you're going to implement an actual IM system, I won't complain.

That's along the lines of what I'd like to see. I was actually going to suggest a feature similar to what YIM offers, where you can invite people into a PM conference. The current context-click methods aren't granular enough for my needs. I would prefer to have a button, within the IM chat interface, that would allow me to invite users to the conference.

Another note: This would drastically reduce the need for functional groups that are created simply for this purpose.

*Likes the Invite button idea*

This could have target marketing applications as well. Good idea. ~ Perse

I use it - the "new" 20 meter chat range made it more difficult for people to collaborate on large builds.
"Conference" chat is an important collaboration feature. It is not often used because most people are unaware that it exists, and message the entire group instead, which is annoying to those who dont want to receive unsoliciterd messages.
I think it should be more streamlined, for instance, add an INVITE button to the standard IM interface so that people can easily choose who to add to the conference.

Personally I have never initiated a conference IM, but I have been invited to conference IMs many times. This is a useful feature that should be developed further as its nice when building or searching the realms of sl for an item (packs of hungry shoppers on the prowl). But seriously if the conference idea was made easier I'm sure more people would use it.

WOuld if it worked
03-01-2005 07:50
I would use it if it worked. 99% of the time I get an error message saying it has timed out and to try again later, no matter HOW fast I try to get the message out. SUpports answer was wait a few minutes. It fails repeatedly and only works once in a great while.

I've used it a few times, but to be honest, find it highly annoying. People use this to spam about nonsense constantly, and its REALLY annoying.

What I would like to see if keep the functionality, however, any time someone copies your card to insert it into a folder, pop a "Do you want to allow, YES/NO"... if you say NO, it automatically deleted that copy of the calling card from that person's folder. Also, any time someone IMs you in a conference, give the option to "remove my card from that folder"... while letting them keep their primary copy of your card.

Cancelling that person's card would have the same effect it does now; rendering all copies they have of yours useless.

Regards,

-Flip

I've used it quite a bit, both to communicate with the sellers in our store (we didn't want to force them to join a group), and with a small group of friends or business associates.

It is awkward to have to copy the calling cards to a folder. I have a special folder set up for the store, but it takes a few minutes to set up a conference with people I don't normally conference with. It would be nice to be able to invite individuals to the conference by just right clicking on their cards.

The necessity of opening a new conference session if someone drop out (relogs, closes window) could use an improvement too.

I hate getting these mass-spam IMs. Contact me singularly or dont be suprised when I don't read the spam.

Perhaps just a short thought on a way-to-long thread... if LL is thinking of revamping the IM system, what about using an open source IM system like Jabber? No more worries about a new protocol, and it should be able to tie nicely into the currently available authentication mechanism... it rarely pays off trying to "reinvent the wheel".
