Before I create an SL version of these card games I'd like to know if there is any demand for trading card games such as Magic the Gathering.

Please post your opinions, if I see some support I'll create the games(or at least their SL counterparts).

I played Magic in college shortly after it came out in 91' but I barely play know since they've introduced invulnerable cards.

My fiancee got me hooked on Yugioh. :)

3 yrs, 2000+ cards later.... we still play. Got the PC Versions, a GBA Version too. Went to a few tournaments as well.

Never got into MTG for some reason.

So I take it that an SL version of such card games has almost no demand...

At least one collectible card game exists in-world, called Combat Cards: http://googoogoggles.dreamhosters.com/CombatCards/index.html

You might want to take a look at what others have done. One resource is the SL Games blog: http://slgames.wordpress.com/

I wasn't aware of that website thanks.=)

As for combat cards, I've never heard of them. I was thinking of more popular card games, Magic the gathering in particular.

Should I warn you about (c) and all?
The reason I don't see those card games is probably because the creator would get sued to the depths of hell. My l$2.

I was wondering about how the (C) worked, but if I made the copyright visible on the texture as they are on the bottom of the card, I think it would be okay.

So I take it from the poll that only 9 people have ever heard of any card games?

So no one is interested in SL versions of RL card games?

Or is it that these "official" forums are "unofficially" dead?;)

You're mistaking. Copyright means you have to have permission of the owner to copy it. By your logic I could be selling copied Windows CD's as long as I write on them (C) Microsoft :) See this as a starting point of research: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright

At its most general, it is literally "the rights to copy" an original creation.

You have to obtain the right to copy first, since you don't have it. Putting a (C) on it does not give you for free the right to copy.

How about if I distributed their game for free?

talk to wizards of the coast, see if they would be interested, they may even send you digitized versions of cards so you dont have to scan them yourself :p it is likely they wont want to port to sl because they have their own online card-battling game.

There's nothing to scan, (the textures are on their website) and I'm certain that they wouldn't want to join the SL mayhem.:(

Doesn't matter, think about warez sites, where you can download commercial software for free, yet it's still illegal. It's not that they don't want you to earn money, it's that they don't want to lose money because of loss of revenue. If there is a free copy of their game (doesn't matter in what medium it's distributed), they potentially lose money, because some people won't buy their version of game. This is how copyright works. I know it has its flaws, but this is the current law. One of the flaw is that maybe some people would like to play these games in SL, but the copyright holder (the creator) won't make a copy of the game, yet he won't give permission to someone else to make a copy either. It's a sad state (Creative Commons tries to change this with little luck), but it's still the law, and you still can get sued if you copy the game, even for distributing for free.

Guess I'll simply have to wait for Wizards of the Coast to come to SL and get their approval. Sorry to dissapoint all the card fans!

If you are so into this thing, it wouldn't hurt to write a letter to the copyright owners of those games. Explain in it how popular SL is, and how it would help promote their image to have a copy of their card game in SL too. Sketch a basic business plan, and ask their oppinion, let them give you conditions. Maybe you will have to sign an RL contract too. It wouldn't hurt to try :)

PS: hey you changed your signature! :P (just joking...)

This is somewhat related to the topic, but anyways, myself and a few other content creators are working on a brand new trading card game in Second Life, I thought some users checking this thread may be interested. The gameplay formula is inspired by "Triple Triad" from Final Fantasy VIII.

The game will be very pick-up and play style, and we are thinking of creating local scoreboards for clubs and such to host contests. I am very excited about this project.
Thanks for reading. (I'm not quite sure if I'm allowed to advertise here so I won't leave the group info etc, but anyone can IM another individual ;))

Why not create your own game for SL instead of duplicating a RL game?

If you make your own game then you own the rights and can do with it whatever you please. Maybe you'll even create a popular game that will make you some real $$$. Worked with Tringo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tringo

Why not create a brand new card game? Tiny Empires didn't rip off any other game and yet its HUGE.
