I'm planning to build a new HUD based interface for SIM Combat and to take the opportunity to make it a trading card game like Magic: The Gathering at the same time.

The idea is to sell tradable Combat Cards separately from SIM Combat weapons. By adding the cards to the inventory of the weapons you can change the set of moves available to you when using that weapon to play SIM Combat. I'll give the sword scripts away for free as long as a Combat Card vending machine is set up wherever swords with the SIM combat scripts are sold. I'll also build the SIM Combat server in to the Combat Card vending machine and give the server/vendor away for free so that anyone can set up a SIM Combat server anywhere.

The hope is that these changes will allow lots more SIM Combat arenas to be set up and for lots more weapons to be used for SIM Combat. In the long run I'd like to make it easy for people to mod the gameplay too to create variants with new moves or new rules.

I'll be doing the scripting work to make this happen, but if anyone has any good HUD scripts (for card games?) that I could use as a starting point that would be good. I would also appreciate help with the 2D design of the cards. I'd like to use images of Second Life residents on the cards too, so if you'd like to feature on the cards please send me a snapshot of your avatar wielding a sword or dagger, preferably against a plain background.

What do you think?

It sounds like a great idea.

I already have something similar to that in the works. A tradeable card game. I'm not sure if the demand is out there for it. It should be fun to make anyway.

lol, this is really strange.

I decided a week ago that I wanted to make a tradeable card based game.

Well, if I ever get enough time and actually do it. haha.

I think it's a great idea and actually could catch on. It's the type of thing I really think SL could use. Something to involve ppl all over SL.

Hope they all turn out to be cool :)

Hox, Rayve, Why don't we work together? It's much more likely that we'll get a game finished that way. The SIM Combat game is already playable at secondlife://europa/106/160, so what I'm talking about is just developing the new HUD and trading card side of things. I'm sure we'll learn a lot from it and could reuse a lot of the development in your trading card games afterwards.

Hmm. I've already designed most of the details for the one I'm working on including the HUD. I could answer any questions that you have. Otherwise, I'll be pretty busy completing the one I'm currently working on.

Cool! Have you got any HUD script code or vendor code you could share? I'll be interested in seeing how your game works out!

Much as I detest Yu-Gi-Oh and similar overcommercialized garbage, for those that DO like it this system would seem to be ideal. And it would probably sell...a lot...and generate a hardcore arena tournament system. The only problem would be how fiercely the trademarks for those games are defended...need either something original like you've done or perhaps actual licensing or an officially sponsored game. I'd like to see some big-name involvement in Second Life, would really ramp things up.

Wow, what are the odds that so many people would think of the same idea about the same general time. I too was thinking of creating tradeable/collectable cards sometime early December but I didn't have the resources to implement it. In fact I was just planning on hiring someone to build and script for me but now I think a partnership may be in order.

Doc, I like the idea but trying to make an actual combat card game like magic is certainly going to take a lot time and effort and be quite a challenge. I wish you the best of luck though in creating this because it certainly would be cool.

Hox, you sound like you're trying to accomplish the same thing that I wanted to do. I have thought of some great ideas and setup for tradeable/collectable cards and was also thinking of establishing a website for this. Plus I have the funding for advertising/store space (A parcel of land if necessary) to help launch something like this. I'd really love to share my ideas with you and hopefully form a partnership. I'm positive I'll be able to bring a lot to the table and help make what you have already done even better. Please drop me a line at emailbox23@yahoo.com and I'll be happy to share my ideas with you to see what you think.

Fantasy Avatars And Locations Needed!
01-17-2006 11:14
UPDATE: We now have a functioning HUD interface and an amazing card design thanks to Osprey, now we need some images for the cards.

So, if you have an amazing fantasy avatar and would like to feature on a Combat Card, please let me know!

There's a free Combat Cards t-shirt on offer for just turning up and letting me take a snap of your avatar and the chance of fame, credit on the card and a full set of Combat Cards if we use your image.

I'd also like suggestions for great fantasy locations that we can use for snapshots and promote on the cards.

Cheers,

Doc.

Of course if you have great images of fantasy avatars you've taken already, that's even better!

If you send them to me in SL or to docboffin at googlemail.com I'll send you your t-shirt and if we use your image a full set of cards.

Cheers,

Doc.

I play tested this today ... the new HUD interface with the cards is a huge, huge improvement over the last system. The art is really slick and the game is much easier to understand and enjoy!

I collect avatars, so I have a pretty wide variety that might work out for cards, and I'd be happy to pose.
