No, it's new with 1.7. I've been noticing it too, in fact I was fixing to write a post here! But you beat me to it, so I'll throw in mine too.

Why was this changed? It looks horrible.

The 'intensity' of shiny is off a bit, too.

Before, there was far less difference between 'low' shiny and 'none'. It was possible to do some very subtle effects this way which did wonderful things far beyond the definition of 'shiny'.

Now, even a little shiny screams "I'M SHINY!"

This is very, very unfortunate.

Would this be the same person that changed the look of it, when no one was asking to have look changed, and who also broke it but didn't notice?

Hot damn, I can't wait! :)

Personally, I think "shiny" has always looked horrible. I turn it off because shiny objects just plain look out of place.

I wouldn't go so far as to suggest they drop it, since I can turn it off, but they really need to direct their energies in other directions than trying out dubious "improvements" in pseudo-reflective surfaces. At least until they get full raytracing in the rendering engine. :)

With this latest update it appears shiny has been fixed, at least the part about linked prims "reflection line" being off set from the rest of the object. Here is a pic from today of 3 cylinders linked together and the line is smooth.

I think these now work even better for lining up than in 1.6 :)
