This has to be a cache problem. And, yeah, the new default texture is bad.

First, I rarely post comments to the Forum because, 99% of the time, I'm pretty happy with SL. It IS a "State of the Art" enviroment and, as such, we all tolerate some issues.

However, as many have stated so well here, the "Gray Universe" we are all living with currently is becoming very HARD to live with.

I may be way off base, but some of the issue, to me, is caused by allocation of resourses. The bottom line is that, to me, many of these issues seem to have begun when SL decided to allocate more time, energy, and, most important "CPU Cycles" to those who want to go to big parties and dance then those who Build.

When "Lag" went down....texture deployment times went UP.

I posted a Forum message a week ago on this topic and recieved an unacceptable response from a Linden in a day.

Its time for LL to understand this..."dancers" don't pay much in fees....BUILDERS do. The "lag" issues are important to all of us...I don't want to minimize this. But, LL needs to address the Slow Texture issue quickly...because, to me, THIS issue will directly effect LL revenue far more than others.

Enough said.

It doesn't look like it's a cache problem, but it's related to the changes made in the interest list (what your camera sees) and the texture pipeline. We've gotten much closer to the heart of the problem and as Karen pointed out in her update today, the texture problems are better, but still being worked on. I know it's been frustrating, and far from ideal for many. You should see ongoing improvements, and we'll continue to work on it until the situation is resolved.

I can't beat this feeling that it's the cache due to the fact that the geometry itself appears to get completely dumped when I leave an area. I'd expect the same geometry with "Tron texture" if it was solely a texture issue. Maybe I'm wrong, but this is what I have noticed.

How about nerfing the default texture for non-tactile objects... because you can't run into them so they might as well remain smokey...

That would make the texture problems about 1000% less annoying.

That would be:

Avatars, both clothes and attachments.

Phantom objects.

Particles.

Trees.

etc etc etc.

No wonder it doesnt have time to load textures...its too busy removing and adding the same region...and then logging all these nice packets from invalid circuits... :(

Go look at your own logs...see if this is happening to you too...would be interested...

It is happening. In the thread I referenced above I cited hundreds of WARNING messages per second of a type similar to those you list.

Must not be a problem though, because the Lindens don't see it. However, I think under the US Americans with Disabilities Act it is illegal to make fun of blind people so I won't, even though their blindness comes from closing their eyes real tight and covering them with their hands.

I'll take a look into the error messages, and often bug report bad ones, the add region one that you see reported is a valid message, and happens when you move in and out and then back in of a view distance of a bordering region in quick succession, if you had stayed out of view distance long enough you would have been discounnected from that child region and then you would have been reconnected when you moved back into range reconected

Running around in preview it seems I see less grey and textures seem more persisitant than on the main grid but that may just be due to the light load on the preview servers.
