Hah, you wanna see ghosts, I'll drop you a copy of my 6000 prim costume... I lovingly call it the chairman, and it crashed the hell out of morris the first time I rezzed it.
It even messed with the transaction system. I had to bug support to get my rezzing money back... 60,000 lindens to rez that thing... shiat ![]() _____________________

As per /120/f8/38129/1.html we're gonna try and test this tomorrow.
The aim is to create as laggy an environment as possible. We're meeting 5pm game time on wednesday at Da Boom on the preview grid. All avs welcome to help. Prim hair will be available (but is not compulsory). Feel free to bring anything you think may help lag - visitor counters etc. |

I didn't think it was lag so much as packet loss that caused ghosting. But yeah, making the sim send a bunch of crap to 15 or 20 avs should cause enough packet loss to create some ghosts.
I recommend getting one of Starax's sculpture auto-rezzers. Those things pop in several hundred temp-on-rez prims every minute! _____________________

i couldn't make it to the ghost party but i just ran into an avatar ghost on the Morris/Oak Grove border in preview. weird thing is there were only a few people on and pretty low lag. haven't seen any object ghosts yet but i've seen how they try for a couple seconds then poof.

Next Build
03-10-2005 17:52
Build 7 has one half of our ghost-busting implementation, build 8 should have the complete solution! But help us make sure! After build 8 comes out hammer away at it and see if you can create ghosts.

I was testing this last night with a simple push-pad... the kind of thing that normally would send you flying 4 or 5 sims and make your AV ghost and force you to reload.
I asked Dan Linden and he confirmed - it seems now if a sim does not hand-off a player properly, the player is put at the center of the sim. So this seems to fix three major issues: - Pushguns that force reset of SL will no longer be effective. = less griefing tools - Cutting corners failure that leads to AV ghosting should be gone. - Privacy issue of using the above to spy on people will no longer be possible. I am extremely pleased that these have been resolved. _____________________

and.....
- do NOT buy land at the center of a sim unless you hope this hand off thing will give you dwell. _____________________

If ghosting really is fixed effectively, I would enjoy seeing an equal or greater amount of praise for the Lindens in the future thanking them for such a solution, as there has been criticism in the past.
It sounds reasonable. ![]() _____________________

LOL and where does that leave your vehicle??? =P I haven't personally tested vehicles in test, but vehicles are usually too slow to AV ghost anyway. I'm hoping the solution was a simple moveObject that takes both the AV and vehicle, though, but at least you will be in the same sim if it's not. _____________________

I managed to ghost on 1.6. Its true that ghosting is much more difficult then it was before but not impossible. I did it by flying around with a rocket attached and force set to 9999 and bouncing around between sim lines. Even that took a little bit. I believe though for the average SL resident that ghosting is pretty much gone for good. Now you have to try to be ghosted. I don't think thats what most people want to do. Still great job Lindens for solving the most common causes of ghosting. Its greatly appreciated.

I switched between avatars, all of which had at least 75 prims in attachments, a bunch of times in a row. No ghosting at all! It was also really fast compared to what I'd expect from <=1.5. I'll be impressed if it works so well on the main grid. I'll also be impressed if I can fly my jet all over the grid without random prims disappearing for random lengths of time.
edit: my jet is still doing the wierd missing prims thing in preview so I guess that is not fixed yet :/ _____________________

just got tracked down by a Linden and told he was having a conversation with my ghost. other than that and spotting somebody ghosted the only ghosting i've seen is the swirling particles from deleting 7644 prims at once stuck around for about 2 minutes after the prims disapeared (slowly).

Chris I did the ghosting test on the day I posted wich was on the 13th. So that must have been early Sunday morning. So that would have been after the last publishing. |

Hmm I had objects ghost for me yesterday, just 4 <10,10,1> sized prims that i deleted at the same time, and 2/4 ghosted. Tried this a few times and got similar results. Of course i'm in Australia so higher pings might have something to do with it?
