Death to bubbles (but i'm too lazy to edit the files to hide them).

The nametag bubbles, unlike the old nametags, are actually usable in a crowd. Rather than a sea of mashed-together orange text, you can see individual names. As a bonus, you don't have to do Stupid Camera Tricks to try and click on an avatar, just go for the nameplate and right-click.

Though I've always run with "Show Temporarily" since the old nameplates were so useless, thus the space doesn't matter to me.

I liked the name bubbles, as well as the chat bubbles, though there weren't enough people on the preview grid to see how they function in large groups. I agree that having the option of both bubbles and screen chat would be nice--it would eliminate the need for bubble-users to have History constantly open at events/gatherings.

I'm not in favor of anything that blocks my view of the world. If I could turn off text completly but still know what people were saying to me, I would.

I'd like a hotkey that, when held down, shows people's names and the roll-over text of the object my cursor is over. Then it all goes away when I let go.

I was going to say something about how this sort of response is pretty typical of Jared anyway. ;) Then I realized I had the wrong Jared _o_el!

lol great, i've got someone out there ruining my good name before I can do it myself? That just won't do...

And yes, it could be whining, it could also be seen as the feedback LL is looking for. I like SL's look & feel the way it is, and think they should concentrate on fixing REAL problems. to pbththththtththth :p

no bubbles for names Please

Please allow a toggle for Name bubbles -

I do not care for the look of them - it crowds the screen taking away from being able to see other things.

Breakdown of 1.6
03-08-2005 15:04
I personally think that the name bubbles are pretty cool. They organize the way we read our group titles and av names so that they are easier to understand and not as cluttered. I also agree with the fact that Linden Labs needs to worry about more important things in SL rather than just changing around a few things such as chat bubbles or rounded edges. I think that they should really try implementing Havok 2 into SL because it is very obvious that it is what every resident wants to see done. Now about the video streaming, I think it is nice to see streaming video in SL but I also believe thats its going to fade away quickly because after seeing it done and overused so many times it just gets old to the point that you cannot take it anymore (and i understand this is toggle-able). The building tools have gotten an upgrade as well and I have to say I have mixed opinions on this feature. Me being a builder in SL feels that although they added in "rulers", they are very hard to understand and become cluttered when you zoom out when trying to build large objects, I hope Linden Labs fixes this problem as well because I am waiting to see how it comes out. Overall, SL 1.6 will be great with its new additions but some of the additions can get annoying and repetive. Nonetheless, cant wait until it is released ^_^.

The name bubbles are a waste of screen real estate.

I use the tiny names in 1.5, and sometimes turn them off completely. I don't like the honking big name bubbles that distort my view. If it was possible to make avatars invisible be design instead of by bughack, I could see the need for having something always visible that can be clicked on. But as it is, I don't see a need.

I'm impressed with the way the bubbles dodge each other so that they don't overlap, something I can see new players possibly complaining about in 1.5, but this makes it more difficult to figure out which name goes with who. Especially if the alpha on their background is reduced to invisibility. I'm rather suprised anyone thought this would be a good idea to spend time on, frankly.

I try to take each change as a single entity and compare it to old behavior as if I didn't have expereience with either. I don't want to make biased options in favor of "how I'm used to things" alone. But this feature, along with the new edit tools, seems more clumsy in in-my-way than the prior version.

I'm against name bubbles.

The Name Bubbles Are Absolutely Terrible
03-29-2005 09:04
The name bubbles obscure the view, make identifying people more confusing because they shift positions from left to right while the people they name stay in the same position , generate a false sense of movement by the avatars they name even though the avatars are motionless, they do not stay the same distance from your own avatar's visible image as you avatar goes from upright to horizontal flight mode. They are a bad idea, and it was a extemely bad idea to spend time on developing them instead of correcting bugs. If the people who wrote the code for them don't know how to fix bugs then instead of spending their time making bad changes they could have been watching the people fixing bugs and thus learning how to do something useful. I certainly hope we can get a tremendous outpouring of opposition for the name bubbles and a tremendous outpouring of demand for an option to retain name text just like it has been.

Kex found the solution for eliminating the bubbles and leaving only the names.

Unfortunatly, the names still keep bouncing around and are rather small. I'd rather see an option for restoring the old, static, large names, as it used to be.

This is partialy due to the reason that I have some problems with motion sickness. Although I manage to handle 3D quite well, if an item keeps "sliding" around repeatedly, I get motion sickness. The name bubbles themselves are annoying as they cover screen space and draw too much attention, but as I turn the opaquecy off, the text keeps bubbling around like a bubble and that only makes my motion sickness worse.

Please concider including an option for restoring the old pre-1.6 name-tags style.

I am in Preview 1.6 at the moment, if you go to "Preferances" and then the "Chat/IM" tab you can change the color on the name bubble. I made mine a very pale blue and it is virtually invisible. I just enabled "chat bubble" and no bubble just text above my head.

If you look at Kex's post it is the last square to the right that is shown in black.

As for titles, I am running through them now, "Live Helper" as does "FairChang", "Representative", "Old Timer", "Who is" all have title on top and my name underneath

Has anyone mentioned this in the hotline?
A linden did reply to the thread, but completely (perhaps purposely) ignored the main topic of the thread altogether.

Not that I've noticed, and I've been reading the Hotline pretty regularly. Philip will probably bust a gasket if you post it now, based on his reaction to the building tools thread, but I think someone probably needs to. (Why they started this forum area if they didn't plan to read it is beyond me....)
