From: Kyler Voom OK, this is about the last straw for me...
So I have been collecting some free items from the various places like Free Dove. My wife decided that she might be interested in SL, so we created an alt for her. When I went to transfer the clothes that I had found, none of them would transfer because *everything* was marked "No Transfer".
What is the point of this? Just trying to waste my time? Why should I need to take her avatar to all of these places again, sort through all of the junk, just to get the same free items that I already have?
These kinds of issues are just sucking the fun out of SL for me (and my wife) Instead of letting such minor details 'suck your fun out', use this opportunity for bonding. Buy a horse with a two person riding attachment and take a romantic ride to the mall where you found the freebie box. ( WATCH OUT FOR HORSE GOBBLING QUICKSAND AT THE BORDER CROSSINGS). Then wifey can have her own box of crap and maybe you will find some other junk. ENJOY!!

My personal choice is to make my items copy/no trans (and sometimes modify) and I'll tell you why.
1. Copy means if they rez it and it doesn't appear they still have a copy in their inventory.
2. If they buy two or three because SL messed up I can refund all but the first transaction and not worry they are out reselling my work.
3. Mod and Copy means if they want this or that changed they have the opportunity to do it themselves, thereby learning some skills. They can customize all they want but not resell it for profit.
4. I hate no copy. During one of SL's wonderful "we are transferring your inventory to a faster database" snafus the new (faster?) database wasn't fast enough and apparently didn't get a full snapshot of my inventory before the no copy items were deleted from the old one. Result? Most of my no-copy items disappeared like a fart in the wind.

This thread sucks. You've gotta be kidding me that you're bitching about something that's free, yet you have to TP to a place to get it. It's not like you drive 20 freaking miles to do so. TP, grap, TP home. What's that, like 60 seconds?
Create some products before bitching about the fact that you can't copy someone else's.... NOOB.

From: Kyler Voom The solution to this would be really easy...if an item is marked as "Free", then just make it so that you *can't* resell it!
I understand everything you are all saying. I understand that the way SL currently works is that I could modify an item and then resell it, so that's why it's marked as "No Transfer". My point is that this is not a good method for handling free items.
This is supposed to be a social game. I should be able to give someone a free gift if I want and there should be some way for them to pass it on without profiting from it. Seems like the merchants out there should *welcome* an easy way to pass around samples of their work. I shouldn't need to hunt down their store. Just the fact that I can easily see who the creator of the item is already makes it easy to me to find their store to buy their stuff. Forcing every new user to revisit a freebie store isn't helping the original merchants at all.
Yes, I'm pissed off. Yes, I'm probably done with SL. Yes, nobody will probably care or respond to this. I'm just *very* upset that SL could be such a huge success, but it has *so many* problems like this.
Yes, my wife could waste hours revisiting the places we have already been together, get the boxes full of junk and filter out the stuff she doesn't want, just to have the same outfit that we have already spent the time putting together ourselves. Why should she need to do this. It isn't fun. It's just a waste of her time. It shouldn't need to be this way. It's just another example of the many reasons SL isn't going to attract the mass audience that I wish it did.
Just add a flag to mark an item as Free. It's easy. A free item could never be sold. But I guess nobody wants to consider ways to improve SL. All I hear is reasons why it's the way it is.
Not that it matters. I'm done with this anyway. Good luck to everyone in the future. Maybe in a couple of years LL will fix all of the problems and get this right. Or, maybe some other company will come along and do it right. Nice experiment. Honesty, if not being able to pass a free item is to stressfull for you, and visting a few freebie places is just to much work for you and your wife, maybe sl isnt the place for you anyways. People need to protect the items that they make from misuse, and if the item needs to be modable, like hair for example theres no way to protect the item from misuse and resale except to make it no transfer. Personally when I was a newbie, going from freebie place to freebie place finding new treasures was alot of fun. It taught me to explore, to search for items, how to unpack, dress myself, and all my basics. As for my Freebie Paradise, I'll continue to keep all items no transfer unless specified otherwise by the creators. I don't feel this is a problem, and most newbies are really happy about getting nice quality items for free and is well worth the small price of tp'ing to get it.

I don't know if anyone has responded to this, but here why you can't do it "no resell". I got a nice gizmo for free marked no resell. I get some more and then decide to make some money off of it. Oh but it's marked no resell, no problem. I will give you this item marked no resell, and you give me some money. Bam, I sold it.Can you understand this? From: Cocoanut Koala People have been wanting LL to add the ability to transfer but not allow sell for ages now. Ever since I've been here, anyway. But they don't/won't, who knows why. coco From: Kyler Voom The solution to this would be really easy...if an item is marked as "Free", then just make it so that you *can't* resell it!

another option is to make the box no copy but transferrable, but make the contents copiable and no transfer. this is how i am selling things.

From: Yumi Murakami Because of the defaulting problem.
When they add the new "transfer but not sell" flag, what should the default on all the items already in the database be?
If the default is "no sale", all the items that were intended for resale suddenly become unresellable. Vendors across the world break.
If the default is "sale", all the freebies that were originaly not intended for resale are now explicitly marked with an indication that resale is OK. Make all currently existing items retain the permissions they have and apply only to newly created items. Personally I think freebies should be no copy and mod/transfer just to avoid this hassle I know I have hundereds of items I would give away if I could especially the 50 hairs I don't wear anymore and have to just delete rather than give away to newbies.

It would seem a bit overkill to get upset having to spend 'a lot of time' regaining all those freebies..... it is probably a lot less time, than the people who made them and offered them for free... SL doesn't charge for TP's, so it IS only time you spent. Our company will be releasing a free TV for anyone in SL, it works much the same way as the 'freeview' version included in the basic avatar pack, but is much better quality and styling. It includes some upto date coding.... why are we giving it away? Simple.. we want people to come to our store and get it.... its a trade off.. they get something for nothing, we get traffic and possibly sell some of our other products. It has got to be better all round for everyone, rather than use camping chairs and dance pads. If anyone has an issue with having to come to the store to collect this freebie.. then we offer a delivery charge of 100L$.

We should BAN everyone who has copybot and try to do that.
