Alrighty, time for my thoughts on this "upgrade". Be prepared for lotsa words and spelling errors =D
Inventory: I hate it. Every time I open my objects folder I get a 10 minute lagfest. Mabey it is just because I am unorganized and my objects folder is like 1000+ objects long. Still the old inventory was never this laggy =(
Movie Streaming: Great idea and looks real good on paper, but really just more lag for me =D I took a little test of mine after crashing when playing a movie. I clicked play, logged off (or crashed for that matter) and logged back on. I crashed 6/10 times. Thats no fun =( ( Not to mention the crash logger locks up on my comp anyway)
(Edit I forgot this Heh) Log On: Takes a lot longer and I am hardley ever getting through anymore. Boo!
Ok mabey it wasnt as long as I thought it would be. Overall I give 1.6 a 4/10 its a lot more laggy and I think building is harder. Well thats my thought. I'm done bitching and feel free to bitch at me ^_^

I agree, though we can't blame them for trying to make everything work, who knows they could have easily been on such a tight timeframe, the more pressure is put on the person the more their prone to failure half of the time,
But it is getting frustrating with Invintory's and the new Tools, Course I like how its set up, its just the 20 hour lagfest isn't doing me good...And pretty much gone from 1 -2 relogs a day to 7-10, O.o
Give it time and it'll more or less get better, When I first came to SL I never thought it would get better, more then a bit laggy and nearly impossible for me to do anythin, I'd say LL has come a loong way since last year ^^

Second Life is a lot like giving birth to a child. There may be a lot of pain involved and food cravings are common, but in the end, it's all worth it.

I don't think so any more. if I don't see fixes that significantly improve my SL experience in 1.6.1, I'm going to go find something else to do where it doesnt feel like paying significant amounts of money to go through the equivalent of childbirth every time you want to play. Frankly I'm fucking sick of deluding myself while waiting for it to get better while it gets steadily worse with every new release. Yes I'm whining. Yes I'm saying I'm going to leave. Deal with it.

Awww Kris, It must be SO frustrating to not be able to do something, especially when your trying to build and Lance, I have my inventory sorted, all my objects are in folders accordingly named, and I have probably over 50 folders in all containing sorted items, and my inventory STILL lags feck outta me, so being organised or not, really isn't an issue, streaming inventory is just laggy :/ The only problems I have really encountered are with No copy/no trans textures not being able to be used (I know they are fixing the skin issue), and with the crippling lag I get if I try and get anything outta my inventory, but I *did* have to turn all my settings waaaaaaaaay down, but then I have to do that with every update. Also I cannot see streaming video no matter HOW hard I try, not that I am really that bothered, if I wanted to watch a movie, i'd watch the TV, also Stop Anim seems to be borked when making gestures too *sigh* I hear you all, and I agree, it is a fucking annoying to pay over $195 a month to play something that you cannot actually play, eternal optimism gets irritating, then so does constant whining, It seems we can't actually complain without looking bad, I am aware ALL updates have their issues, and most of the time ppl just ride them out, but when you have been having unadressed issues for months, it must be highly frustrating. Luckily the Lindens have been very helpful and helped me with my issues, I guess they are just busy lil beavers :/

(Edit I forgot this Heh) Log On: Takes a lot longer and I am hardley ever getting through anymore. Boo! I find this really interesting. Maybe I'm an atypical user, and I'm certainly new at SL, but my experiences have been diametrically opposite to this. Inventory - I love the new inventory (specifically the search). I typically only have 10-15 things in my "Objects" folder, because I am extremely anal about organizing stuff like that. When I open my Objects folder, its instant. Maybe you should think about organizing a little. Movie Streaming - I've only looked at one streaming movie, and it worked fine. I didn't notice any difference with the video turned on or off. Since this is a client-side thing, it might have more to do with your machine and/or connection. Lon On - Like everyone, I had trouble signing in for the first few hours. Since then, its been enormously faster during logon, every single time. I've encoutered none of the login waits I used to endure during 1.5 at peak times. One possibility that occurs to me is that perhaps people should look at their trash folders, and see how much stuff is in there. I've only been in SL for a few weeks now, but already my trash has hundreds of objects in it. For someone who's been here for a year or more, you might have tens of thousands of objects in your trash. Maybe you should try deleting your trash, and making a "Misc Stuff" that you move everything from your Objects folder that you don't normally use. - Jon

- Jon I am also anal about my folders and like them to be TOTALLY organised, like I said in my above post, I have tons of folders, all named accordingly, but I still lag when opening my inventory, even if its only the landmarks folder with about 10 things in it. I do think older players are prolly gunna take longer streaming their inventory cos they have a ton more stuff than newer players. But I lag (not sure about lance) about 10 minutes AFTER I manage to struggle thru my inventory and close it again. I empty my trash daily and hell i've even been thru ALL my folders and deleted or given away stuff I never use. *sigh*

My inventory lags too but when I think about how much time I wasted without the Search feature it's worth it.
I crash a lot with streaming video... But it's very neat once you finally get it going.
I don't have any login issues.

Could it be...

...that a lot of the complaints are more a question of connection quality. Lots of the stuff i see people complaining about never happened to me and i certainly don't have one of these liquid-nitrog cooled GigaHertz Monsters (in fact the SL installer heavily doubted that my setup would work at all). But what i do have is a 100% reliable DSL Connection (768/12 not oversized but _reliable_ and they have _all_ ports open. Maybe the people complaining here should ask themselves if it really was a hot idea to subscribe to the ISP Services the Quickie-Mart offered in the friday leaflet. And perhaps running Kazaa, Bittorrent and eDonkey together in Background is a bad move as well C.

Seriously though, SL is a LOT worse these days then when I first signed up... Lag increases month by month... I am tempted to ask (especially as we still have just one asset server for ALL the sims in world), is it not that eventually the SL infrastructure might grind to a halt, if you keep adding bits on at the edges...

Well, for everything cept SL. Of course, now people just tell me that its something somewhere between me and the US instead. But again, funny how I can use just about anything else I care to think of anywhere in the world 100% reliably. Call me a cynic, but when SL, and SL alone, fail on my computer and connection, and the only thing that changed on my pc in weeks is the SL client (hell, the SL client IS the only thing on my pc) I put the blame fair and square on SL. (In case you're wondering, I went out and bought a second hard drive, on which I installed a brand new WIN XPP, all the service packs, the latest drivers and JUST the SL client. In the vain hope I might be able to play. No dice, tho.)

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

So far my 1.6 experience has been primarily taken up with me swearing at my computer. I like the new build tools, except for a couple of really irritating bugs that I'm hoping are fixed in 1.6.1, but the upgrade was hardly worth it for that so far. The streaming inventory I don't mind, it doesn't lag me up and I just have to wait a second to load folders. And the login is a snap now, even on Saturday night when it used to take me 10 minutes to get connected I get right in. But then there's the constant freezing. It's awesome, I can connect and hang out for an hour no problem, then suddenly SL is completely frozen, followed by 10-15 additional freezes everytime I reconnect. Reconnect, 5 seconds later, frozen. WOO. Fuck that. That was until someone in my group said they'd heard that the shadows option caused that. So far so good with that off. Why wasn't this fixed in the months of preview? Amazing. Then there's attachments. Personally, I'm thinking whatever they did to improve speed wasn't worth all the bugs. I've got some awesome screenshots of attachments that just rezzed completely broken and stayed that way for ten minutes before correcting themselves, pieces just randomly rotated and misaligned for no reason. And then I'm trying to work on a suit, and pieces of the suit just keep vanishing or popping out of alignment for no reason, then suddenly coming back a minute later. The hell? Most of the build tool changes I like. But man, this has a lot of bugs if anything does. Surely this was one of the most extensively tested features and it's still broken. I can't enter numbers into the position and size boxes when editing link parts, if I do the prim just vanishes completely. Selecting something else usually brings it back, but whatever number I entered isn't there. Also the rulers are nice, except that they're entirely unpredictable. Sometimes they seem to obey the grid increment I have set, other times they don't. What's up with this? I tried using them briefly and then decided to hell with it, and had to go back to aligning and building things the 1.5 way. Unlinking prims and entering numbers. So much for enhanced build tools. Also, local axis is broken too. Woo. At least in some cases. If I right click an attachment and drop it, the local axis on it seems to get stuck on the rotation it held while attached. All in all, I'm rating 1.6 with a . I'm holding out hope for 1.6.1 to be a dramatic improvement, otherwise the frustration since the upgrade hasn't really been worth my time.

So far I have had decent performance with the new 1.6 and I really like the new search feature, and the inventory really doesnt do me any problems. I did crash a lot when it first came out, and I had to turn Shadows off and I updated my video card and sound card drivers and now all is good. I also dont have a mondo awesome machine, but its not old either. Some of the issues might be bandwidth or connectabitily to the server (baring the real bugs that are listed that I am rather annoyed with, both on the scripting and building side). Check this post I just answered to someone here: /111/2c/41335/1.html That shows you how to check if your latency to the secondlife server is bad, or good. Its not always true, but its a piece of the puzzle you can check out and see if thats some of the problem. High ping times between hops on a traceroute can cause havok to anything your doing on the internet, especially a game like SecondLife.

Despite a number of problems in this update, I've found it has been less of a hassle than any other 1.X update so far. That's not to say this one is hassle-free, it isn't by far, but it's been better than most. My biggest problem right now is the studdering framerate for a few minutes after first touching my inventory. That seems like a true bug, and one that could be fixed quickly. Another biggie that is affecting many people is the non-transfer skin texture issue, but that has already been fixed in 1.6.1 and will be rolling out with that patch soon. Everything else seems to be just a matter of fine-tuning the changes. The edit tools, while radically different and very sloppy in implementation, are not as horrible as all that... IF the sloppiness can be addressed. I think that will take a few patches to nail it all down. (Keep the suggestions flooding in to them!) Thinking back on other major updates, so many totaly new and unlivable bugs came in back then. It's obvious that Linden Lab is doing a lot more testing, both in-house, and through player feedback in Previews. Though, as always, there is room for improvement.

Use the Shaders, Luke.

About the slowdowns that the update has created for some people, I think LL needs to adopt a new mantra, at least where updates ever involve graphics: From: someone No new graphic feature or anything affecting graphics will ever be introduced if it doesn't make use of the programmable vertex and pixel shaders on our powerful GPUs. --------------------- Meanwhile, overheard in a wine bar in downtown GPU City ... From: someone We're the Hardware Shader twins, but we're feeling totally miserable. LL doesn't love us.
It's still messing around in its old love affair with that boring old dinosaur, the CPU. We shaders are pretty, we're new, and we're eager!!! They should use us, and speed up SL x 20 !!
