P2P is sweet!
Er, yeah...guess it would be.

It was also sweet in version 0.8.

'Course, in those days you could still log in and see textures on stuff.

BTW Darzus, you probably got the system status page because the main grid is currently down for maintenance.

Doubt it.

Many of the problems with the code have been around a long time (some date back to Beta, and very many to 1.2 and 1.3). For years, new problems have been piled on top of old ones. There's only just so much that can be 'fixed' without re-writing the code from scratch.

At this point the 1.x series is a lost cause, and I'm relieved to see that little development effort was wasted trying to rush Havok2, HTML, full XML-RPC, etc. into 1.8 Preview.

I hope that the majority of Dev time and energy is now being spent on 2.0. ;)

Well, good point, BlackAdder — it would be a waste of resources to throw everything away for 2.0 just to make us a bit happier :)

Although under the new development model — features getting implemented as they are ready, and not according to a Big Picture — I wonder if we're not going to see 1.9, 1.10, 1.11, 1.12, and so on, all with just 1 or 2 new features, much before 2.0 comes out. We can only wait to see what happens.

In either case, I think it's a resonable trade-off to have a "major release" with just 1 or 2 well-tested new features every other month or so, than a Big Major Release with 5,347 new features which have to be bug-fixed over a week with the developers working 24h/7, like it happened in the past. This new development model seems to have an advantage: only a limited group of developers ever participates in a release (ie, 2 features, 2 groups) leaving the rest of the developer team concentrated on continuing their own projects without interference.

If LL is working in their own best interests, they are hopefully working on 2.0 with their major development effort as there are some huge design limitations inherent in the structure of SL1 which cannot be fixed without a ground-up rewrite.

I've long suspected that they are doing exactly this as the SL1 track looks very much like a product put into maintainence - which is a big reason that we're seeing a succession of "junk" feature releases that are mostly centered around keeping SL1 from utterly falling apart until SL2 is ready.

They don't have to be so damn quiet about it, but it is their choice.

Questions about the preview grid..
12-09-2005 06:37
Enquiring cyber-folk want to know:

1. Is the preview grid a copy of the main grid? ie: If I own a lot on the main grid, do I also own it in the preview grid?? Are improvements made before a certain date there??

2. Can both 1.7.X and 1.8.0.(0) be installed on the same machine?? .. if so, what are the gotchas??

Thanks
Tas

I can awnser both of thouse...

1. Yes it is a copy of the maingrid... a backed up copy of it to be precice.
New users most likely cant use preview dew to LL uses an earlyer date... 1 month to 3-2 weeks is the time frame they have used backup of the grid.
Also the full grid will not be online.

2.Yes both can be installed.
