Ok, here is the deal, it seems the waves look great on my machine for maybe two minutes then they suddenly become almost invisable, only the sun reflecting on the water. I am curious if this is happening to anyone else or is it just me?

Have you submitted a bug-report?

I noticed this morning that the wave effect seemed to diminish. I was with someone who had a less advanced video card, and when we took photos, her wave effects were much better than mine. I wonder whether this was the reason.

I've seen this happen in preview as well. Turning ripple water off and on again in preferences also restores the effect.

Yea there are still some bugs with it, like if you switch to and from fullscreen and turn on/off anistropic filtering you loose the water, needing a restart of sl to restore it

Give that ago now, latest version has a different wave type doesnt look like an oil slick, also should detect if your card isnt supported, which i think is 1.4 or below pixel shaders so only support for 2.0 and above, the moon is now reflected, also the water doesnt dissapear when you switch to fullscreen or anistropic filtering.

So if you have a water ripple tickbox and cant see water try updating your drivers as it should work.

Wow, much better now. The waves look far more realistic. :) They are persistant as well.

Things to really help SL water:

1. Turn underwater voids black again, the effect now is awful.
2. Caustics and god rays (the rays of light you see underwater and the scattered light on the bottom.
3. Floating particles (bits of floatsum that make you feel you are underwater)

This is what underwater in SL should look like at the very least at any rate.

They couldve figured this out, no sweat.

And I said "Bounce a Graviton particle beam off the main deflector dish..."

*wanders off, whistling*
