I have a Dell 600 laptop which I take on vacation. Last year, I was able to get into sl and at least visit, chat with my friends now and then, pay rent see how any sales went, etc.

Now this year I will be unable to do that for 24 days :( :(

PLEASE give me an option to stay in touch when I don't have access to a powerful computer.

From my experience of these type of platforms, the 'client' will eventually develop into a pluggin for your internet browser. All graphics rendering, media playing etc will take place via api calls and the capabilities of your own system will deplict what level of experience you gain/loose.

I've been looking at SilverLight with interest. It is a pluggin to .NET Framework, which is the basis of how SL's client works. Assuming this becomes cross platform useable, it maybe the way forward. SilverLight, from what I can gather, is a media pluggin component that can handle a variety of graphic rendering, media and audio functions. It is also programmable, so you can add new elements, to work with your specific platform as a developer.

Very much like the days of DOS, when Windows matured and was adopted as a shell environment when you did not have to have a printer driver for every programme you had installed, or use the basic monotone graphics from a standard 256 colour pallette and it would assume you have a 12" CRT. Programmes would simply (very simplified explaination) say to the OS, I want to do this, via the correct API call, and the OS would do it, relevant to your system specifications. If you set your colour printer to only print B&W, the programme would not override those settings, it would simply send the command to print whatever is on the page and let your printer settings to carryout whatever you set, or the capabilities of the printer.

I was just thinking the same thing as 1.20 is just too much for my old PC.

It has been a fun FOUR YEARS!

But I can not afford a new computer every time they "upgrade" the viewer.

With windlight, you can supposedly turn down the settings to less than that of the pre-windlight viewer. My frame rate has gone _up_ with the new viewer, even with it on high settings.

For all the people who think they're being forced to leave: have you tried turning down the settings?

same here

mines got better on the new viewer without a tweak at all

if you can't run it with all the new graphics upgrades etc - turn it down ?????

Sooo.. everyone believes these issues are totally LL's fault again?

When are designers going to learn that 200+ primed hair, door knobs with 1024x1024 textures on them, high glow settings, scripted radars, tip jars, massive amounts of scultpies, rotating huge signs, colour and texture changers that resemble some washed out blurry flipbook, auto greeting mats that spam your inventory with LM's and NC's evertime you bounce off the walls.... class 4 sims can run 4,000 active scripts, class 5, 5,000, yet I see over and over 2-3 times that amount running. I suppose ppls blame LL for not curtailing or capping these things?

I've seen ppls moaning about SL not working, when you discover they do not have a virus checker, never run one, nor a firewall, and are running XP without even SP1 installed. If you don't service your car, or have it serviced in a garage at the required intervals, you blame the car manufacturer when it breaks down?

Connections are another thing... whilst LL does have its problems, its not always them, everyone connects across the global internet, yet everytime there is packet loss, they blame LL.

I'm no defender of LL and some of their historic moves, but in retrospect, I also don't blame them for everything.

If you want to play the lastest version of Halflife, there is no point blaming the game creators that your system ran the past versions, when the new ones gives more game play, with muinimum specs of a system of 4 years ago. I agree SL does/can stress your system, but there is nothing like SL anywhere. No platform where you can rez a couple of free prims, glue them together, colour and texture it and sell it. Or make something that is the only one in the world, and should you choose not to share it, it is 100% unique. Create a script, upload pics of your aunty flo and put them on a tee shirt, create animations on the fly, build a sex pen 1000 mtrs up in the sky. Thats just the tip of the iceberg.

I run 4 systems for SL, from a low spec single core, with 1gb slow ram, 256kb GC.. right up to a quad core, 8gb fast ram, 4.5tb Sata II hd array, twin overclocked 8800gtx sli GC'd with 1gb DDR III ram each. I run SL on XP home, XP Professional, Vista 32 and 64 Ultimate. I don't have 99% of the issues most users seem to have.

To the OP, I believe you may have a point about wanting a Lite version, but not when people moan about, turning down all the settings, now they have grey water, washed out skys and lego friends. Some want their cake and eat it.
