Please remove the "PDT"/"PST"? Please?

I notice that "PDT"/"PST" was quietly added to the clock on the menu bar in the latest version.

This really messes with trying to see SL as a "virtual world" - I just look at the time and suddenly I'm jumped back to the fact that we're all following the time of some place in RL America because that's where all of this really is..

Can't we have "SLT" instead or similar?

I understand that one of the reasons the time was changed was because newbies were asking what it meant. Under the revised system I expect you'll have newbies asking how they can change the clock from PDT to Mars Canal Time, or wherever it is they're based.

Apart from the fact that SL is meant to be a separate universe (the SL earth is flat!), and changing to PDT destroys that illusion, the clock was a unifying factor. SL'ers come from all over the world (the RL world, that is [G]). Being on SL time fostered a sense of community.

In RL, when people take up residence in a new country, they are expected to adapt to that country's laws and customs, and not the other way round. Newbies have a ton of stuff to learn - is it really going to make their first few days smoother to show a RL time zone? It doesn't make the conversion any easier for those of us not living on the West Coast of the USA (I'll still turn up late/early to events LOL). Removing griefers from the welcome areas is a much higher priority imho.

Eileen McCallister has made a neat in-world t-shirt - Front: "Bring Back SLT": Back: "Please". IM her for one and let your avi spread the message around the globe, er, grid, that SL is its own place with its own time.

SLT RULES! OK?

I been hearing this for a long time! But people people had reasonable sence not to change it. But there you go someone did............We all learned that the time was diff and we adjusted to the SLT but this change is really unneeded.......
tHERE ARE SO MNAY OTHER THINGS THAT COULD HAVE BEEN CHANGED. :rolleyes:

I prefer PDT/PST being specific, but perhaps this isn't the best way to do it.

I do think it's important to be clear on what SLT really is, especially since even LL were never clear on whether SLT was PST/PDT or just PST, I've seen messages posted on the blog using "SLT" with what (on calculation) were PST timestamps when PDT was in effect.

It would be nice if the time was just the time, and the hovertext was more detailed. Perhaps something like:

Second Life Time (SLT)
Sun Oct 31 11:13 AM SLT (PDT)
Simulated time: 43 minutes after sunset
Sunrise at 11:30 AM SLT

Personally I think the entire world should revolve around CET (Central European Time), since I am narrow-minded, self-centered and unable to see any multicultural/multiregional aspect of this game.

Yes, I am also known for sarcasm....

...so really it comes down to... y'know... like what Yumi said as OP.

Would be nice if you could see an avatar's native time in the hover-text with their name, but that's neither here nor there :)

You know, I don't think that would be nice at all.

It's not like you're putting their RL name there, but it's information that you really don't need to know about them.

Please keep SLT.

For us at New Citizens Incorporated it's always easier to announce classes and events on a unified time zone. Yes, people will ask "what is SLT?", but just as many people will not know, what PST is, too, so changing it will not make any difference in that regard.

Let Second Life keep Second Life Time, so we all have one more common ground to stand on.

bad work, LL

Only if they allowed it of course. But sometimes I'd like to be able to broadcast my native time so people know that I'm X hours ahead of them. I could script it I suppose, but daylight savings is a horrifying thing to code in LSL.

I'll jump on this bandwagon. Please return SLT. Even though I live in Pacific, I prefer having a virtual time zone to go with my virtual world.

CODE

integer offset = 2; // hours
string tzname = "CDT";

default
{
state_entry()
{
llSetTimerEvent(60);
llListen(6,"","","");
}
listen(integer channel, string name, key agent, string message)
{
integer new_offset = (integer) message;
if(new_offset == 0)
tzname = message;
else
offset = new_offset;
}
timer()
{
// now you can do the time calculations without worrying about doing the DST calculations yourself.
// (exercise left to reader)
llSetText(timestring,<1,1,1>,1);
}
}

Um, Argent, I didn't buy a computer to have to change the clock manually anyway, why not ditch the timer and enter the time every minute myself instead? =S

Bring back SLT. I don't care what timezone it reflects.. GMT=SLT would be fine too...

So what if the noobs ask "what is SLT?" make an onmouseover that says "The official Second Life Time is 8:30pm"

But.. could we also have the official SecondLife DATE as well? it's be nice for those in Germany to be able to tell me (in Washington State) if a meeting is 7am Sunday morning, or 7am Monday Morning.. the clock isn't enough.

I think they should remove the letters SLT, PST, PDT and put a clock icon instead, and when you hover mouse over it it brings a baloon describing SecondLife Time (SLT)

That's kind of, um, a silly question... how about "because you only need to change it twice a year, instead of twice a minute?"

I'd prefer SLT put on there, as it's the only common time zone we all have inside SL, but ... it would be nice if it were an option to choose how the time is labeled, wouldn't it? Further along in my 'druthers list would be an option to display SLT (or pst or pdt) AND one's local time.

But as options, not forced choices made for us. Lotta other platforms allow for that. Oh and I'll second the sunrise/sunset clocking as another option for display or hover info. That'd be kinda fun, but gee, bugs and grid attack fixes first, before any and all of this.

That's my 2L.
