This game does not cost 9.95 if you want to do anything meaningful with it without being dependent on somebody else for land, resources, etc. The whole 9.95 for life thing is obviously just a hook.

I could very easily see some nineninetyfiver getting sick of playing tringo in a laggy sim or just flitting around and chatting.

It would be an interesting metric to see how many nineninetyfivers upgrade. If you look at the ones that do stay on that tier, I would be willing to bet no less than half of them are alts. This also no doubt pumps up the population metrics.

Access to all that SL has to offer, not just a hamstrung version of it, requires a monthly fee. I liken the 9.95 deal very much to something like Maya LE, which lets you diddle with Maya but not save or export work. Some day--and that day will come quickly--if you find 3d modeling to your liking, you are going to tier up, or find another program.

What REALLY bothers me is that the nineninetyfive plan is no doubt offset by the people who pay monthly fees. I'm an advocate of give 'em 10 days free, then pay the monthly fee or aloha. Might cut down the problem with griefer alts if you had to pay for all your toons.

You can do alot more then just play Tringo and Chat with paying the one time $9.95

Let me list somethings you can do:

1) You can build in a sandbox. (or learn to)
2) You can write scripts. (or learn to)
3) You can make clothing. (or learn to)
4) You can rent space in a mall to sell your items you have made. Renting usualy doesnt cost a monthly tier fee, but a weekly L$ Fee, and if your items are selling, then you dont have to worry about that.
5) You can find people with similar intrests and work on a project with them. You dont have to pay monthly to help someone out.
6) There are other events you can go to... they are very few and far between now, but they are out there.

theres more out there.. heres just a little list.

and You can't say you cant do something like building or that, until you try, you really should try, or ask a friendwhos a good or okay builder. You never know you cant do something until you really try... Learn by doing, its one of thebetter ways of learning :D

Let us accept the premise that a basic account is insufficient for success in SL, even though this notion is a silly one.

Let's say you upgrade to a quarterly premium account. That's seven bucks a month for enough tier to open a decent sized shop or several small kiosks all over the grid. Moreover, the premium stipends alone are more than enough to pay a few weekly rents at plenty of different places around the grid. At this point, all you have to do is pull in L$1000 a week from sales to pay your premium membership after some cash conversion.

How is this too hard or two expensive?

Hmmnnn...

Nope. Don't see it.

Why?

I could build my buildings and items without ownings a single inch of land. If I wanted to rent a shop, for the average price of 250/week, I would have been able to be paid up for the next year from a single build job.

The truth is, people have their own reasons for leaving. Some get bored with the idea of flitting from place to place finding things to do, and forget that THEY could create an event themselves. This seems, to me, to be a problem with a lack of the kind of imagination this place needs to be fun.

Now, before you get all defensive, note that I never said they were stupid, lazy, or anything along that line. I said they don't enjoy it because it's not the kind of fun they're used to and can't adjust.

There area no missions, pointers, or plots to this game. They have no direction given to them, because SL relys on the user to provide change. Some people just are not proactive in entertaining themselves because they feel they should be entertained.

Let's face it: SL is a playground, not a game.

Rob, you were here for barely two months, and it costs too damn much? $9.95 for life, and it costs too damn much. Pay for a year, and it's $6 a month and it's too damn much?

Hell, I don't know of any other service that offers as much bang for the buck in terms of online community as SL. My SO and I spend at least $90 a quarter on our two City of Heroes accounts.

Naturally, to each their own, and I wish you well, but I take exception with the statement that SL is too expensive...

Merwan, are you OK hun? I can't tell you how many countless nOObs I've directed to Awakening Avatars for help, socialization, guidance, etc...

You know, you really are providing SL with a great service and I hope that everyone (including the Lindens) recognizes that.

Renting, or otherwise depending on others for resources, equates to the same in RL more or less. You have no equity at all. This is also something that is evolving in SL and has not been there to "try" with any notion of stability, until fairly recently (my persepctive starting from when there were 5ish sims).

And like I said about Maya, sure, you can learn to use it. But you want anything permanent, you'll buy it.

I've owned a house for now (I think) over two years. There is no way, at all, that house would have still been there if I had rented the land. Not seeing anything silly about this at all.

I stick by meh old rusty guns...you want a piece of SL, you'll pay for it, and not a one time 9.95 fee. SL is just far too transient. Perhaps this is changing a little now though, but I just think it's far too soon to state renting as a viable and permanent SL lifestyle is as good as owning land.

It would be interesting to try and find out what the oldest build is that has always been on the same piece of rented land (not owned originally, via group, deed, whatever, in any way, by the tenant). I'll bet it ain't that old. Another interesting tidbit might be, what is the average time a tenant will actually lease the land.

And yes, I know we all rent the land ultimately from LL. Let's just let that one go please.

As for the "try it first" thing, just look at my registered date please. I've both been rentor and rentee, owned and not owned, part of and not part of FIC, rich and poor, popular and unpopular, in short, "tried it", for far longer than all but a few on the grid. Consider that before addressing a forum speaker as a noob that doesn't know a prim from a pram.

I believe her post was directed to the original poster. You know, the one who started the thread saying he was leaving. The one with the start date of Feb '05. (Unless I missed the memo that this thread was now about you. If so, nevermind.)

First, this should be in Notices and Well Wishes. :)

Second, Robert, I've never met you inworld but I wish you well on your travels, and if you go to Basic and just leave your account around, it leaves open-ended possibilities to come back should you change your mind.

Take care. :)
