Is this game for me?

Hi everyone, just a newbie posting to say Hi! I recently quit World of Warcraft, so I've been looking for something else to play when I'm bored. I played the game for a few hours today, but its pretty overwhelming to say the least. I'd much rather describe my likes and dislikes, and have you all decide for me if I'd enjoy playing this!

The main thing is that I simply cannot stand games where people take it seriously to the point of insanity, like it's there second life. I've been on WoW servers where the whole player population screams bloody murder because of a few hours downtime, because they were "losing money" during the downtime. Harmless pranks were met with ire by the entire community, and the few souls worth playing alongside left pretty fast. :(

The thing that REALLY got to me, however, is the constant barrage of lawsuit threats, none of which were ever fulfilled (although that would have made me lose even more faith in humanity). The entire server seemed to think they were some sort of elite internet lawyer/detective that could, with their awesome internet legal skills, sue you for inconveniencing them or bumping into them or whatever.

So what do you guys think?

While of course we would love you to stay, something you just said makes me wonder whether you will enjoy this game, what is it called again?

Well, for many of us, this IS our second life. And tread lightly -- many of us don't consider this to be a game at all. After all, there is no objective, no scoring, no winning or losing... and many people are making real income through this so-called "game," my wife and I included. Some make rather substantial amounts of income here. Hardly qualifies as a game.

If you can understand that, great; welcome to SL. If not... well, perhaps you'd be happier in Guild Wars or somewhere.

And if your idea of a "harmless prank" involves doing something that would put the grid out of commission for a while... I'd suggest you move on. We tarred and feathered the last guy who did that.

I agree with it all, but ANY online game is going to have those problems. SL is the exact same way.

When 1.7 was released, people nearly shat themselves because they couldn't make money. When the Grid went down for 3 hours, people were threatening lawsuits against the parties involved.

Same for versions 1.6, 1.5, 1.4, and 1.3.

Basically, let the people who wring their hands and scream do what they want to do. They have little bearing on society as a whole, and will probably die sooner due to the stress.

I will have to say of all the games I have played online including betas, mmorpgs, and old text based there is one type of person I have yet to met in SL.

I AM HAXXOR I WILL HAXXOR YOUR COMPUTER WITH MY El_ITE SKILLS. ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US! YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED INTO MY HAXXOR MIGHT!

ok really bad impression but you get the idea. No "god like" script kiddies that grab the lastest hack from some yahoo and calls it thier own programming skills, etc.

They're probably all on the teen grid. :p

On the main topic:
There are a lot of people who take SL really seriously; some for good reason (doing real business in SL, being disabled or in the middle of nowhere and SL being their main from of socialisation, etc.), some just because they're drama queens. If that bother you just keep away from them or ignore them. Or in the case of drama queens; feel free to tease them, they're either having a laugh and will enjoy your cajoling or they need to lighten up anyway.

Teen Grid? Teen Grid?! GREAT! Now to move WOW, EQ, DIALBO 2, etc over to the same sys.....oh wait that means they'd have 90% of thier gamers in the teen grid.

LOL and yes best advice about this "world", "game", "development platform" is that you will meet everyone. Just turn a cheek and if that doesn't work.....there is this great weapon called a Hand of God....LOL.

Boy, that seems rather too pointedly aimed at the response to the Grid attack, doesn't it? And that bit about "second life" reeks of feigned innocence.

Football is a game. A lot of people make big buck off of it anyway ;)

You have to find what you want to do in Second Life. Some use it to make money, some use it to raise money for charity, some use it to socialize and make friends, some buy empires and proclaim themselves god (=dance club manager :p ).

Find and pick what you want. You'll find people who take SL _VERY_ seriously, others with a lighter approach. One thing SL can be is a platform for just any passion you may have: We have airplane freaks who built airports, chess freaks who built chess clubs, Mondrian fans who live inside a house that looks like a Mondrian painting, roleplayers who built whole worlds modelled after their favorite role play...

That world is yours, just like in real life, you'll take out what you brought in it in the first place :) .

I think it's possible you could be a griefer. If you are, stay away.

Haha. Don't know if this is a joke or a question, so I'll answer it anyway.

W-Hat is the name of a group that came from the SomethingAwful forums. One of them set off an attack on the grid (taking down the whole of second life for a couple of hours) which brought them to most people's attention. Some of the are 'griefers' (personally I'm not a big fan of the term), some of them are okay; much like any group. From what I hear, the ones that do annoy people tend to be quite good at it. The name does actually come from the word 'what', BTW.

This would probably be a good point to discuss what is a "harmless prank" and what isn't. To put is simply, things that don't actually cause any problems (like dropping a ten ton weight on people for instance) are generally taken with good humor (of course some people will get pissed off by this kinda thing too, but you wouldn't get kicked out of SL for it). Dropping bombs that are detrimental to people's use of SL (such as filling an entire area with thick smoke so nobody can see or something that causes large ammounts of lag) will pretty much piss everyone off. Launching people into orbit or anything like that will depend on who you hit, personally I find it quite funny and would probably go after the person who did it for a laugh, but a lot of people will get really pissed of with you for it. Oh, and as a general rule, don't do anything to someone who's building.

This game is for everybody. Of course, it does help if you fall into the "Lord" category. See this thread /108/ab/70452/1.html
