From: katykiwi Moonflower Nothing Reagan ever did prohibits WORKING for money!! eeeek did I say that word!?
Here is a novel idea! Why not use the money spent on broadband internet, online games etc to pay off credit card debt and use the time spent posting on forums and in online games WORKING!! Yikes! There is that word again. katy, forgive me, but you're acting a bit like a twit. I say this merely as a descriptor of your current behavior, as opposed to some kind of insult. I certainly agree that Lordfly ought to look into more conventional means, but I can respect not wanting to get into real debt, even the relatively low-interest, low-obligation student loan kind. LF has also said that he does work, and he spends no money on his broadband or on SL; SL pays for itself. Sure, "get another job, you lazy jerk" may be emotionally satisfying, but on the other hand, someone working two - or even three - jobs AND trying to hold down even a part-time college career isn't going to be worth a damn at either the jobs, or the school. So, even though I do think he's got options he hasn't properly explored, there's nothing wrong with passing the hat among friends.

From: Omen Torgeson Sorry, LF.
It wasn't that I thought, "Gee, why hasn't he just asked his folks for help. Did he overlook that?!?"... It was more a statement of surprise that they're either unwilling or unable to help you out. Rhetorical, really... As like you said, you wouldn't be posting if you already had a solution for this.
Good luck. No problem, mate, I understood, sorry if I sounded like I was attacking you directly.

From: Erin Talamasca People fit fun in where they can. Just because they manage to fit it in doesn't mean they're slacking and could be better spending their time (admittedly, I could be better spending my time in bed but then I'd never get a break). AMEN!! All work and no play...well it can drive you INSANE!! I admit, LF's original posting took me aback a little too because I think there are many of us in financial struggles these days, but here we are too spending time in SL so who are we to judge? I am on the verge of needing to take on a second job and desperately hoping I can do it and still find time to DJ weekly, its my one hobby and I live for it...and I am sure builders such as LF feel the same kind of relief and get the break from rl that they needs by building in SL. Bottom line is that we all know he isn't the only one of us in finanacial trouble, and I certainly can't help him out, but I will not judge him for enjoying his time and profession in SL while trying to get through something as admirable as college. We all need a break. Lastly, I never should have quit college....bravo to those who are struggling through it! Maybe someday I will return..anyone wanna contribute to Q's Broadcasting School Fund??? Kidding, kidding (not really LOL)

I don't think it is at all appropriate for people to be asking the personal questions they are. People will either help you or they won't. I would not feel compelled to answer their questions or feel bad about not wanting to.
There is no shame in asking for help.

Seems to me Lordfly seriously needs the money, otherwise he would not be asking of such from the community as it is a really embarrasing thing to have to do when you are as established in a community such as this. Not to say that asking for money is in itself embarassing, but it does take a step.

Seeing as I'm already viewed as a social pariah for begging for money, I might as well give an update for the piranhas to chew on.
To date, people have given me $L211,020, as well as paypal amounts of $US 100.00. Roughly speaking, that makes out for a USD total of $761.00.
In IM, the responses have been all positive; apparently none of the naysayers have the balls to pick at me in private. Indeed, why pull someone aside and scold them without an audience? It's much better to throw tomatoes and incite the crowd.
A day after I asked for help I applied to FAFSA; i'm awaiting final paperwork clearance, but the initial numbers they sent me indicated that they won't give me any money, by a long shot. Apparently, the way the system works is that even if you aren't claimed as a dependent (I haven't been since age 21), the government expects your parents to throw vast sums of free money at you for college. Alas, I don't live in such a fantasy world.
I'll be getting more traditional loans as soon as the paperwork clears, I imagine.
To the 22 people that have given me money, thank you kindly from the bottom of my heart. I'll be making something special for you guys at some point. Starting today I'll be paying back loans.
To the half dozen people on the forums scolding me in public, blow me. If you have an issue, argue with me in private. Doing it on the forums is like taking a baseball bat to a street bum; he already doesn't have anything, so why beat the shit out of him? Public entertainment?
In retrospect, this was a stupid experiment, one that will probably tarnish me for at least 2 years. Nevertheless, I needed the money, and figured the giving community of SL would be one that could help in a pinch. It came through, albeit with some rocky bits.
For the D&D nerds out there, I've gained a level. Also:
+8 to cynicism -4 to humility -3 to popularity +5 to begging
Cya all in-world. Or not.

Guess what? You brought this into the public eye. Expect people to respond here whether positively or negatively since this is where you came to beg. Nobody need seek you out to let you know privately how they feel. Why didn't you ask your friends in private to help you out? Any negative public reaction is not very much like beating a bum with a bat. You have much more than any street person does. Wow, tarnished for 2 years? I had no real feelings on this one way or the other, but this last post is absurd. If you bring your dirty laundry into the light you have to accept whatever reaction you get. EDIT: I do wish you luck sorting it all out.

Just an observation here...but if you appeal for charitable donations in a public forum, then it's just plain naive to think (or expect) the responses wont be public. Saying "bite me" to those that publicly refused your publicly begging for money only leaves an equally negative impression. - Newfie
