Leaving SL

Well I've given this SL world a good try and now I'm leaving. Why am I leaving? I have an 8000+ sq m land situated on a cliff edge with a beautiful view. I built up my land with beauty as a theme, being careful not to clash with neighbours by blocking their view or building too high or too big which would block or spoil the great view. But a new neighbour moved-in down below and dropped a HUMONGOUS pretention of a "cathedral" that must be the ugliest building in SL. So yes, I'm leaving. This was a good experience for me, and I have met a couple of good friends and I will miss them. But the way a few people act in SL is just something that I'm not willing to waste my money on, trying to put up with. I have better things to do in RL. Call me a quitter if you must, but in my opinion, it's just not worth the time fighting for virtual land or stuff if it's going to bring me anything else than joy and satisfaction.

Have you looked into one of the many themed sims in SL? There are others who have had your experience as well and tried to improve upon things.

I am sorry to hear this and respect your decision. May I ask why you do not consider one of the communities which offer zoning restrictions to be a viable alternative?

I'm sorry to hear you feel the need to leave... seems kind of a drastic solution, though. I think anybody who's been here any length of time has had to deal with annoying builds next door. In my case, I waited it out, and the annoying build eventually disappeared, and the neighbor moved.

Have you tried politely talking to the neighbor about the build, *not* to tell them you find it ugly, but to see if they might be still working on it, experimenting with different builds, etc.? Another alternative I've found useful is to put up a screen to block it, clear on their side so they can't see it, with a nice scenic on my side. That way you can keep your land, and they can keep their build, but you don't have to look at it.

I find it strange that one bad build next to you would drive you from SL. It happens, and happens alot. But if you waited a week or 4, chances are that build would change. Structures have no permenance in SL, sometimes sadly. And generally, people in SL act a hell of a lot better than the majority of online environments. The 18+ thing really does help.

There are private sim communities, and there are great neighbors on the mainland, but if you are willing to leave SL over one neighbors build, me thinks you weren't enjoying other parts of it either.

I wish you the best on your virtual journey.

Though you may "leave", I'd advise not cancelling you account...just knock it back to the lifetime member....

Just in case you have one of those days where you think back on the things you liked about SL and wanna try again, or if you just wanna pop in and see any changes.

This appears to be a decision based on more than one aspect of the OP's experience in SL. I noticed the following comment in the "What happened to Second Life culture?".

All that would do to me, is put up a huge wall, and place a very very ugly picture on that side, and nice moutain range/sunset view on mine...

So I get back an even better view then I had before.. :)

Have you spoken to him/her about it? Have you offered to help? Even with just some basic building/texturing tips? You'd be suprised how far an offer to help would go. Lots of people don't even know the stuff they are building is ugly, or that they are being bad neighbors. The world works best if we stress community, especially this early in the game.

Thanks to all the encouraging and supporting replies.
But go take a look for yourselves at Achemon 110,150. You will see what I built and what I'm talking about. I have already considered all the suggestions above. None are satisfying. No community that I know of will allow my 5 story pagoda. and putting a big wall with a texture on it would be too prim demanding. I was happy with the view, I had both sunrise and sunset... now...

When I was new I put up trees all over my land. Some branches were sticking through the walls of another's building. I had no idea it was doing that. When the owner of the other building asked me to move my trees I deleted them right away, so asking might help.

Also you might consider moving your build up in the sky. I used to do that to avoid looking at ugly builds near by. I would build on the ground and then move everything up by adding 100 to the Z position number. You find that setting when you edit the object/house etc. Edit|More button| object tab| Position(meters) Z box.

Leaving won't work, cause you'll be back... everyone comes back :)

Let me know if you need help moving up or anything else you need. If I can help I will..

How much are you asking for your 8,000 meter of land? I might be interested.

That's kinda condescending, but I don't take offence. Just go take a look at what I built at Achemon 110,150. Then maybe I can give you some help ;-)

I wasn't trying to be condescending, just trying to help. You are pretty new according to your sl birthdate, so I assumed you might need some help moving your build up. Maybe you are an excellent builder, I don't know, no need for me to see the build. I understand your issue, been there several times.

If you want to leave sl because of a single build next to your build I would say you will not be happy in sl anyhow, unless you buy a sim island.

I said you'll be back because in every case someone announced their departure to me they returned. Maybe you will be different, but somehow I don't see a reason to announce it unless you really don't want to leave, and hope someone might be able to fix your problem. Unfortunately, everyone thinks their build is the best and everyone should build in a way as to not harm their view.

If the neighbor bought land and pays a tier fee, s/he is entitled to build on that land. It's not their job to assure my happiness even if i was there first. So I have the option to move or live with it.

Sorry if my posts offend you. I was trying to be helpful. Being a relatively new resident made me jump to the conclusion you might need help in some way. I help new users nearly every day as a mentor, greeter and instructor. That's why I offered my time out of my free time to help you any way possible. :)

You know viewpoints are a tricky thing. I flew out to look and I thought your Zen garden and the new "Cathedral" worked well together.

I know some would think it would be nice to have just the view you want around you. But that's not possible in SL. One of the things I've come to appreciate in SL is the fact that not living in a virtual bubble, like the lots in TSO, is a plus.

Thanks for trying to help, but you are way off base on this one. The building in question is so out of proportion compared to all its surrounding building that it hurts my brain. The thing is taller than the cliff!

I came into SL to experiment. The amount of time I spend every day was on average 4hr since day one. Whatever, the experiment is over. If I don't like it, I may as well leave. As someone remarked, there are other reasons why I leave. This building was just the last push.

Dont go!

Other than Garnet you are the only nice neighbor I have. :(

The work you have done on your property especially the attention to nature and blending in with your surroundings is unique. I wish more people had the same attitude.

Consider that selfish idiots like that fellow with the "cathedral" usually dissapear quickly.
Think of all the other idiots that have come and gone already.

please dont go.

Thanks for taking the time to give your perspective on your sl experience. The amount of time and money which you've put into the experience makes your opinion all the more interesting to me. I believe the percentage of members willing to invest in SL as tier paying land owners is only 15%.

I dont want to speak for Patyeka, but the build is not "ugly" in he sense that you are likely thinking.

The builder has done a good job technically, it's just that it blocks Patyekas view almost entirely from 110 metres below his level to way above, and from horizon to horizon almost on either side. At least that is the effect if you are standing in his garden.

The only thing good about it is that it is comical that he calls it a "cathedral" when it looks like nothing less than a giant handbag complete with handles :)

The person in question has been talked to very nicely and diplomatically by at least a couple of people and his (paraphrased) response is along the lines of:

"I think SL is a just a stupid game, so if I bug you, too bad, it's not real anyway."

Way to justify pretty much any type of behaviour eh?
Your typical punk attitude IMO.

edit: Clarification, the builder (foolish frost) is *not* the person i am talking about, it is the owner. And the look of the build has changed significantly in recent days, so the handbag comment was a cheap shot and I apologise for that. I should have talked to the builder first. :)

Just so people can judge for themselves, I flew out there and took a screenshot of the "castle" in question. It's not a bad build, but I confess the size does seem a bit excessive to me. Still, I wouldn't call it "ugly".

Sorry, your picture does not do justice to the situation. here are 4 from different points of view. and if you come to see for yourselves, be sure to read the profile of the owner of the land on which this thing is built. You can then judge for yourself.
