Professional Cameraman Tips for SL::
- Get a capable machine that can rip visual output directly from VGA. This will require two boxes.
- Optimize your settings for the scene beforehand.
- Get there early and rez everything
- Use the camera controls and NOT mouselook.
- turn off the UI elements via DEBUG combos
- Set chat falloff as low as possible
- Use an nVidia powered PC w/ a minimized XP install

Well. That's my advice. Keep up the good work!

increasing draw distance to 250m in a sim of 73 people = bad idea.

Using 7.1.2 and still never was able to access the video. Audio was good though. :)

Ghoti, I had problems trying to link to the Quicktime icon on the website. When I opened Quicktime independently and typed in the URL, it worked for me then.

Burke, they were also late in starting, You hadn't missed but 15 minutes of it maybe. It was a great show! Ty again Bo and crew.

I can't begin to say how frustrated and disappointed I was last night, given the publicity of this event. There just didn't seem to be any way for me to connect to it. Multiple searches of "The Infinite Mind" resulted either in "none found" or in the search function freezing up. Neither the QuickTime or the ShoutCast link was functional for me despite multiple efforts.

From reading this thread it appears that one had to be on a special list, or be privy to the "real" links to the site, or have sufficient arcane computer skills in order to attend.

Is SL a two-tiered system only for those in the know? Can I expect the same thing to happen with the upcoming Rheingold and Vonnegut lectures? If so then it seems like the only reason to promote events like this is so that those of us who are left out will feel bad.

Did anyone record it, then? I wasn't suddenly stricken with insomnia and thus was unable to listen myself.

I /know/, I just couldn't find stuff using regular methods. If I understand correctly, The Infinite Mind sim was hidden until today. And appeared to be hidden during the concert.
The video I got was of a noob using SL in the middle of a bad asset situation, TRYING TO ADJUST SETTINGS ON SCREEN!!!

Now... I get it, mistakes happen, but you're supposed to test things. And FFS, put links up beforehand, on the site, and run test video and audio through it. I'm just saying.

Also... had I the name of the camera man, I would have been spamming him with OWNED textures.

The performance that took place last night was incredible, and I don't just say that because I was involved in the production of it. Having an SL event simulcast back into SL has NEVER been done before, so yes there were some issues on how it was done, how it could have been better and how it will be done in the future.

I very much apologize to those that were unable to see it. As you can imagine, none of us were able to post here last night as we were in-world making sure that things ran as smoothly as possible. The links for the live audio and video feeds were posted on the website, which was linked to here and it was never our goal to exclude anyone. The "list" was simply to make sure that, should someone that needed to be there (say, Suzanne, John or any of the production staff) could get back in-world if they crashed and not be blocked out by the fact that the sim was full.

Again, we apologize for the issues that were experienced last night. We are hoping that tonight's broadcast of John Maeda's interview will go smoother.

And thank you to all of you who have shown such incredible support to The Infinite Mind!

Try any and all of these links to connect.

http://www.lcmedia.com/secondlife/

For Video:
If the link for Quicktime from this website doesn't work try these directions:
If the video refuses to play at that web address, try opening the Quicktime Player software, click File > Open URL, and type in "rtsp://qt.venuma.com/im.sdp" and hit enter.

For Audio:
If the link for winamp from this website doesn't work try these directions:
If not, try opening one of the aforementioned media players, click "Open Location" (or "Open URL" or "Open Stream", depending on the player) and type in http://lcm.serverroom.us:4338/listen.pls and hit enter. If that doesn't work, try typing in http://lcm.serverroom.us:4338 instead and hit enter. After a few seconds of buffering, the audio should start playing.

To get to the sim:
Last night it wasn't visible to most people. Perhaps it was only visible to those that had tickets. But if you want to get to the island try these directions:
To get to The Infinite Mind's campus log into Second Life with your account. If this is your first time in Second Life (aka "in world";), then we suggest giving yourself 15-30 minutes to proceed through "Orientation Island"...it's very helpful in getting you used to moving around inside Second Life. Once that's done, click MAP and in the REGION textbox, search for "The Infinite Mind" sim. Click TELEPORT and you'll appear at our campus. Head over to the Ampitheater and you'll see the concert. If it hasn't before, Second Life will ask you if you want to make your music control active, you'll want to answer "yes". A small control box for the music will appear in the bottom center of your screen. Click the "play" button and adjust the volume slider as needed.

I believe the camera man was Goat Varga. Or some "Goat" variation.

Anyone who ups their draw distance to 250m on a mac is insane. It was fun looking at his/her desktop though. And uhh, watching him play with his settings, and watching him fly around all over the place and watching nothing rez.................

It's always easy in hindsight to criticise but it's extremely unfortunate the first event of its kind will be used as a landmark for what not to do. You really should have checked the credentials of whoever did ( or didn't do ) that video broadcast.

But that aside ... If you could get John Maeda together with the LL UI crew ... now that would make a fascinating discussion! I look forward to seeing/listening to the show, and I wish you better luck too.

Well I think I can state for everyone who came to the Phoenix Spa that listening to the audio was a lot of fun to do together and, of course, the impromptu party that happened afterwards rocked hard.

I will try to do this with the other IM shows coming up -- Vonnegut and I forgot the other one.

Thanks Viv! That was a lot of fun, even if I did have to go so early to do that RL thing :)

QT video of Suzanne Vega in Second Life
08-04-2006 11:45
Hey folks, well you asked and I'll respond...I'm the technical director for The Infinite Mind and I was responsible for the QT video setup on Suzanne Vega last night.

I'll freely admit I was getting a lot of on-the-job training here...my background is primarily in public radio/audio engineering. And although I've done lots of audio/video webcasts over the past 10 years I've never done one with Second Life before.

The hardware setup last night was a Mac Mini 1.42GHz with 1GB RAM running Apple Broadcaster sending a QT stream to the nifty folks at Venuma.com, who donated a hefty QTSS for us to use. There was a professional DVcam aimed at the LCD flatscreen...after much searching I couldn't find a screen capture program for Mac OSX that would export a live video stream to a QTSS. Emphasis on live...there's several that'll do it a saved file but that wouldn't work for this purpose.

And that same Mac was running an instance of Second Life as well...and as we learned, it didn't like it. We were getting about 10% packet loss which led to all the lack of rezing you saw. The hell of it is, the setup worked perfectly all day when we were testing it...it was the load of having 90 avatars vs. 10 avatars that pushed it over the edge. D'oh.

Towards the end I got my laptop fired up and aimed the camera at it, but alas, the laptop isn't quite powerful enough to run SL smoothly either.

For tonight's John Maeda show (and the Rheingold & Vonnegut shows) I've got a much more powerful PC (3.14GHz & 1GB RAM on WinXP) running SL to aim the camera at while the MacMini runs the Apple Broadcaster encoder. So far it seems to work fine.

However, I'd be happy to take any suggestions and comments y'all have for how to improve things! Please post 'em here or send them to aaron@lcmedia.com

- Aaron Read (aka Aaron Abilene)
- Technical Director for "The Infinite Mind"

P.S. I did notice that on my desktop, when trying to load www.venuma.com/im.html in Firefox, the QT video worked fine. In Internet Explorer, it refused to play. I couldn't figure that out as it worked fine on several other PC's in here running IE. But if it happens to you, there's a direct QT link: rtsp://qt147.venuma.com/im.sdp or just use Firefox. Not to be preachy, but Firefox is pretty cool...give it a try for a week and tell me you don't end up loving the "open all these bookmarks in tabs" functionality. :-)

P.P.S. Goat Varga is the avatar I was using, so that was me, too. :-)

Don't give them the name of the avi :P
Well. A Mini.... w/ 90 people... you're lucky you didn't need a fire extinquisher.
I've been looking for a way to just pipe VGA into a video card on a seperate machine.

Good luck, and give 'em hell!

Streaming The Infinite Mind to your Media Parcel
08-04-2006 17:42
FYI -- for those of you looking to pull the stream into your sim via the media parcel player, you should be using the URL: http://lcm.serverroom.us:4338. This is an acceptable URL format for an SL media parcel stream. The other URL is a non-compliant format and will not stream to your media parcel.

Viv, thanks for hosting us & it was great meeting all of you!

Aaron, a Mac Mini?! What were you thinking?! If it's an older mini, then it has a G4 (bleh); if a newer, Intel integrated video (double bleh). If you're going Mac for this, then you definitely need a Core Duo system (or better -- waiting for Tuesday to hear the SteveNote!) *and* a real video chip (ATI or nVidia).

I got to love SL on my PowerBook G4 with 64 MB ATI graphics, but it was slow, slow, slow. I am loving it to death on my new Intel MacBook Pro w/ 128 MB ATI. (Well, everything but the asset server right now -- /me kicks the box.) Tried SL on a MacBook at the Apple Store and got at most half the frame rate -- it's the video that was the real difference. Still better than my PB G4.

By the way, despite my comments, great job -- this is a whole new realm and we need pioneers to hack the way through the jungle. Just wish Suzanne Vega wasn't the first, so that more glitches could have been worked out :)

Note: that's for audio. I got this to work for video on my plot: http://www.venuma.com/im.mov. Then I decided to go join the crew at Phoenix Spa, since I wanted it to be a social event -- otherwise, why not just watch it in QuickTime Player?
