Regarding the plethora of posts from residents regarding copyrights infringement and the like, evoking responses from Linden such as this:

/139/04/91987/1.html#post922750

First, one must wonder why residents with no vested interest in a copyright would even be concerned in the first place. I can see a friend of an artist friend, for example, who sees an infringement, notifying their friend. Such rampant concern for vast business conglomerates does make me question their motives (Competition with their own business? Envy of success?)

In any case, to make things easier, I wondered if LL has considered a program such as eBay's VERO. In a program such as this, LL could offer to list for these major companies, on the SL website, what residents may and may not do with images, etc.

Another benefit is that residents could be better assured that these companies are monitoring the grid for violations themselves, and that residents need not send in so many ARs or post as much about it.

A side benefit for LL would be an introduction of SL and its capabilities to these companies, who may in turn wish to purchase and build a sim (or 12) with displays. I don't want to see 'Buy Coca Cola - it's refreshing' blimps flying around SL, but I would enjoy spending time on a set of sims with duplications of portions of Disney World, Busch Gardens, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, etc.

Another benefit would be the potential for r/l work for the excellent content developers in SL, as well as inspiration for other builds.

And there's the benefit of marketing opportunities that would bring in and retain more resident customers.

Some day it would be nice to see something in SL that exemplifies its full capabilities and potential.

Just some thoughts from a very bored resident, disgusted with the sex-club-and-camping-chair landscape.

=====================

"does it make sense to have realistic architecture in a world where we can fly?"

Yes, if it's interesting and thought provoking and provides an opportunity for people to see and explore something they'll never be able to otherwise.

And I'd also love to see "worlds" within SL based entirely on new, unique, creative themes and ideas - things not found at all in the r/l.

Thank you for your response, Torley.

Your post really got me thinking about all the possibilities here!

First, I've always been amazed at all the varying motivations in here. Regardless of how a rightsholder comes to know of copyright infringement within SL, we have the DMCA in the open. Certainly, it doesn't apply just to big companies, but copyright owners all types--a diversity like SL itself. So I would hope Resis choose, in the first place, to create original content in here, which is their intellectual property.

There've already been some business ventures as you describe scalin up, some ongoing, and there'll be more in the upcoming months. What I hope is that the gridverse grows, not only will there be something here for everyone, but it'll be easy to find it--for example, in listing what you enjoy, I can't help but think of when the Louvre museum had a WWW incarnation birthed in the mid-90s. And the subsequent development of optimized search tools, which is something we really need to think a lot about and do within SL beyond the current finder.

Philosophically, as well, what we're going to be seeing is more exploration of virtual spaces: does it make sense to have realistic architecture in a world where we can fly? I think so, and at the same time, I think it doesn't. Those contradictions are founded upon a bedrock of many personal visions I've heard here, and it's just generated theses dynamic reactions within me which have me wondering about the same things you do.

Yes, there are a lot of sex clubs and camping chairs in SL. There's lots of other things too, and I often wonder about creative chaos: for example, "combat camping chairs" in damage-enabled areas, or even a stylish work of architecture that is like an upscale European bordello instead of a flat box. Would I be curious to see such a thing? Yes!

I have this list... it has "stuff" (to put it mildly) I want to see in SL. Every time I see something that matches what's on it, I check it off. The other day, I checked off "kite"--as made by Green Fate--but "rock tumbler" is still on there. It keeps me going.

Zee, I wish you the best in your unboredom! Thanx for sharing!
