This thread is like :
/139/27/106982/1.html#post1040765
- it is a list of URLs which go to proposals about how to reform the group system in second life.
Some of these may already be planned as improvements to the group system, it's just that they have not been marked as under consideration. Others are just damn good ideas that LL would do well to implement as they're about groups and have high demand anyway.

The ones that I think might be under development, and thus, should probably get a linden comment or two on their proposal pages :
http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=567 - banning people from groups
http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=525 - LSL function : llInvite2Group()
http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=1249 - huge list of ways to improve groups.

A list of already existing group ideas :

From /13/c7/99564/1.html#post984251, a summary of the main ideas that people want used to change the group system :
From: Wayfinder Wishbringer
This is a great list. I noticed several re-occurring ideas here:

* The Founder should have a checkbox system for each officer in the group which allows/disallows certain privileges
* Founder should have full authority in order to prevent misbehaving officers
* More groups are needed
* A central group financial account fully accessable to the founder and whatever officer(s) he/she designates (I am indeed tired of storing group funds in my personal av account and having to keep all that straight). That group account should be accessible just like an avatar, so if a donation box is set to group, donations automatically go to that group account.
* Group communications need improved.
* A group "inventory" list made available (that's a new idea to me, and a good one. Imagine how much hassle it would save if new group members of say, StarFleet, could click on a group inventory folder and access basic clothing/phasers, etc.)

This is an excellent list of basic, essential and long-needed group concepts. Well done!

From : /13/c7/99564/1.html - two things the above doesn't show clearly :
From: Tre Giles

3. GROUP NEWSLETTER. This would basically be a notecard that could be sent to all group members at once and would be stored in the Notecard folder. If they're online, they'll get the newsletter immediately, just like any notecard. If they are offline, they will receive an email note telling them the NAME OF THE GROUP that sent the newsletter and the NAME of the newsletter so they may easily find it. This feature should be available only to officers, not standard members.

4. GROUP MUTE. Larger groups can create incredible amounts of spam. People should be able to mute group chatter the same way they mute individuals if the chatter becomes excessive. The person should be able to set the mute for "this session only" or "permanent" (recognizing of course that muting a group virtually cuts them off from group contact). Even if a group is muted, members would still receive Group Announcements and Group Newsletter (otherwise, why belong to the group?).

I request that the Lindens do two things :
1) Check :
From: me, above

http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=567 - banning people from groups
http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=525 - LSL function : llInvite2Group()
http://secondlife.com/vote/index.php?get_id=1249 - huge list of ways to improve groups.

and mark as 'in development' the ones they're already working on.

2) Whoever is updating the group code for Second Life, please read the suggestions above - they're pretty much a summary of most of the other major suggestions people have made for improving groups. They're provided as a convenient TODO list :)

Thank you.

We'll see how much trouble I get for leaking information. ;)

I have been part of a team doing a first pass at some group changes for the last several weeks. Most of what you reference is not included in this pass. There is no ban from groups, lsl invite to groups function, new chat channel or chat system, unlimited groups, central group bank or central group inventory. Sorry but these just are not currently being worked on.

What we are addressing is group structure. In many ways this needed to be done before many of the others could because it changes drastically how groups work.

We are replacing the fixed Officer/Member system with a FAR more flexible roles system that allows for multiple roles per group, each role with definable action powers. Any member in a group is always part of the 'Everyone' role, and can be in 0 or more other roles, and yes the action powers of the everyone role are definable. There is also always an Owner role, which must always have at least 1 person in it and always has full powers. Other than those 2 roles there can be up to {TBD small number, like 10} user defined roles.

There are on the order of 35 - 40 selectable action powers currently. They are additive only - if you are in any role that can do action X, then you can do action X.

There are 2 other new things in this project:
Group Notices: Notices are announcements to the group that may include an inventory attachment. They are sent to email if offline and show onscreen when you next login, or if you are already online. They are opt-outable on an individual basis or per-role as defined above. Past notices are saved for 30 days and available from the groups window.

An increase in the max number of groups to 25. Groups are complicated and resource intensive things. Unfortunately the group roles stuff does not improve that. Increasing the max number of groups has a significant increase in needed resources: each new group slot means between 1 and {total number of active residents} new groups. That can be a lot. We will be uping the limit to 25 and we do know there is a desire for more so we will be watching carefully to see what the next step will be.

This project has been progressing nicely, however as you can guess there is significant testing needed and I am not sure when this will reach public preview or release.
