Cali, I am quickly finding out the best way to know another's pain is to experience it myself. And in learning to build more, I am going through exactly what it's like. I vowed upon this job that I would never fall victim to "community by proxy", or in other words, distancing myself from Second Life as it's lived. I swore a personal oath that if Resis are gonna suffer through bugs, then I must too.
Some of my latest work: I've been actively assigned to help bridge accounts of bugs here in the SL Forums and inworld, as a vocal supplement for bug reports and other evidence. I want to continue to actively post here, not as some mere token of "we're listening", but so I can experience the pulse and report back all my finds to the Linden family!
And now, EVIDENCE!
Truely essential. Something that recently came to exist that didn't before is
the Known Issues forum. Karen Linden has been soooo passionate about communicating problems WE want to FIX, and I know this firsthand!
She even got kudos yesterday, and I'm sure noone at LL rests on their laurels as long as these damned problems exist. Having the public list (and many more internally which is carefully kept track of) in front of us keeps us moving.
Release Notes, of course, announce what has been done.
Bugs are a potpourri. Like illnesses, there are many types of bugs. Some plague building, others are useability issues, and others still reside on the website. It's all connected; fixing something in one area will break another. A very good example of this, recently, was making HUDs more effectively viewable--we know how that turned out for snapshots! What I'm personally keyed on are the simple things to fix that've been around a long time. The major annoyances worth griping for. But here at LL, bugs are attacked at all levels--
Some bugs may be fixed but seem more like a "feature". It adds something new while relieving pain. You know how that adage goes. You know that bad bug where you rez a bunch of objects, return 'em, and Pending Uploads clogs anyone from TPing out of the sim? (Which gets asked about a lot on Live Help.) Well, that's supposed to be addressed in 1.9, part of the whole "Improved communication between regions" package which is difficult to explain but it makes the
feel of the SL experience better. (Is it not a bug with a car if it's a bumpy ride?)
And what about UGLEE distorted textures that's
long been complained about as a "building bug"?
ALSO fixed in 1.9 as "Planar Texture Mapping". It's been KICKED IN THE ASS! SCROO IT! I remember when "Edit Linked Parts" was preceded by "Select Individual". I remember when grid alignment blew chunks compared to today's--I remember so many PITAs that don't exist. Avatar and object ghosting? A rarity like smallpox! Light lag? Full Bright! And what exists today, what I gotta say to anyone reading this: chime in with your voice, express on the SL Forums in the appropriate places--leap on another thread to focus the beam or start your own if your most hated bug hasn't been mentioned here yet--and send your bug reports in,
please. If you're being silent but have something to say, c'mon... you count. Even if the results don't come right away, you gotta be passionate and persistent to BE THE CHANGE.
I've come to find out, a lot of people who've come across bugs don't file bug reports or assume someone else will do it, and it's a damn tragedy! If you are personally affected by a bug report, you SHOULD send it in--even if "a friend already sent one", and even if you know it's slated to be fixed! Your details and personal insight may cast a new light, and a choir of voices singing about the same thing reaches us!
Send me a "Top 10 List" of your most hated bugs; be SURE to include a neat summary for each one and the bug report # you received next to it. (After you send a bug report from HELP menu ---> REPORT BUG, you'll get an email with the # in the autoreply.) You must have sent bug reports for all of them already.
Email it to me at torley@lindenlab.com with the exact subject line of "My Top 10 Most Hated Bugs" with your Resident name or send a notecard meeting these specs to moi, Torley Linden, and I'll be sure to compile them all, distill the commonest and most actionable findings from the community, and let the developers know! Results and anything I learn further which I can share, I will post on these very SL Forums!!!!
P.S. I expect to be flooded.
