Thank you graciously for your patience. Second Life's grid is open again, so come in and enjoy!

Please note there may be some slowdowns during the rush as so many of our Residents strive to enter SL at the same time... but it'll settle down after the initial excitement.

OMG! I left for a week because SL was too laggy to play after the grid opened back up. I come back and, I admit, it is much better then the unplayable lag there was before. I did all the reconnection of the routers, clearing the cache, setting draw distance low etc. I did it all. OK the “initial excitement” is over, so what’s going on now? It has gone from unplayable to unusable for me. I can’t rez objects, can hardly move, sound is dead to me, talking out of IMs is inconceivable, I have relogged at least 5 times, etc. etc. etc. A few of my friends are having the same problems and a lot of my friends are having even worse problems (back to unplayable thing again). What are you guys doing there at LL, this has to be the worse lag I have ever experienced in my time with SL!!? Please tell me it is being caused by a mass update of SL or something and you all are fixing it because this is bullsh*t. I can do nothing at all but log off and log back on.

P.S. TP & IM are actually doing considerably better then before I left though -_-

[A two Hour Later EDIT] OOOOHHH here we go again with the crashing and the sim attackers etc......

UGH...total lag central......is the grid being attacked again? Totally agree that SL is very laggy lately. But hope it's just my pc now.

??region restarting??
04-30-2006 13:33
i was on my private island sim when i got a chat message :System: Region will restart in 1 minute. This message appeared blue in color in my chat history and was NOT a drop down restart like usually the warnings are.... as i was the only land admin on at the time i was wondering if LL was doing rolling restarts again but the fact that the message was in chat and not the regular drop down LL box i wondered... i got on right away with Live Help about it but got booted before i could get to really talk to anyone... now i cant log back in... as im now seeing others are having this prob too... .has anyone else received the System: Region will restart in 1 minute. message????

I was talking with Blaze Columbia when this occured and he got the same message i did.

Thank you

Grid appears to be under attack once again
04-30-2006 13:38
I was sitting like normal in Abbotts, working on a top secret project when I noticed the time for Physics was starting to spike. I noticed in the About Land window that there were 141 objects from someone that doesn't belong within the aerodrome group. One of those objects flew by and set off my shield from multiple directions. Then I crashed and can't log back in. Looks like another grid wide attack.

I can't log in. Everytime I try it either freezes and shows the (not responding) message or I end up getting the unable to connect message. I've changed port setting with no effect. I had just booted my pc up. I haven't lost connection or I wouldn't be posting here. It's bad enough I keep getting booted from SL DAILY... now I can't even get it. Is there no end to this???:(

Hope you are in the office, Lindens
04-30-2006 13:41
HELOO,
 Can't login, to sims, and before I shut down, and tried the relog, I couldn't teleport anywhere, and couldn't send IM's, and was just floating in mid-air. Thanks, and hope you all are there to work on the issues going on today, Sunday, the 30th...

Is the grid down yet again
04-30-2006 13:46
I was playing earlier today and had no problems. Had to take care of some RL responsibilities for 45 min and now I'm not able to log on at all. If the grid is down, is it too much trouble to log on to the forums and let residents know so we don't think it's our hardware. Been checking the forums and no notifications so I'm at a loss at this point.

Fluctuations before the attack
04-30-2006 13:53
Seems like SL have another attack :-((( I noted some strange fluctuations in a sim earlier today, and asked Harry to take a look at it. May be caused by a test attack on one or a few sims prior to the big one. Just mention this for your investigation. Think the name of the sim is Agri or something similar. Harry SHOULD have the details of our conversation!

There is another attack on the grid, necessitating that we shut it down to log-ins and clean things up. We anticipate this process will take a couple hours, and will post here when it opens up again.

I know this is totally frustrating -- for us too. We're working with the authorities to go after the people responsible for these attacks, as you know. When I have information to share I'll pass it on.

There are numerous Legal Options for LL to use against Attackers
04-30-2006 14:10
If a DA does not want to go after someone just because they are in Canada, Linden Labs can sue that person in the Canadian courts and this would I think be a sure bet for victory for Linden Labs. Then when LL wins they can demand the attacker not only pay for the damages but legal fees as well.

The grid's down- what's new?
04-30-2006 14:11
I don't mean to sound so harsh but, shouldn't Second Life, such a popular online game, have WAY better protection from stuff like this? I mean as much money as we pay you guys, this shouldn't even happen... And if it does maybe like 3 times a year. Not 3 times a week. I feel this game is going down :(

grid check?
04-30-2006 14:13
Okay i know this doens't belong here, but i've been reading through all these posts here and i have to say this that might actually protect the lindens from a little grief. Instead of yelling at them and asking if the grid is down and why they won't tell you. how about actually checking the grid status. it TELLS you if the GRID is down.... Instead of coming on here and telling the rest of us that Lindens don't post stuff when it's needed, and wasting forum space by asking if the grid is down. Learn to check it yourself. I saw something about one lady who just about tore her computer apart because she thought it was her own hardware that was the problem...did she ever think to just check the grid status? I mean come on....it's like most of the SL forum users are idiots or something.

Im-f*cking-possiple.....

From: From Me
This is just too much........ I got a solution!!!!!! How about the lindens just do some sort of system restore like my windows can. Restore SL to 1.9.1 or whenever before all of this lag and complications started. I don't really think it is the "Grid Attacks" that are making SL lag so much (this reminds me about President Bush and how he lies about everything then tries to feed us HAPPY pills), I think it is these 'Updates' that you all are doing. How about go back a few versions, back to when SL was playable and has almost no lag at most times and then remake these 'upgrades' (I refer to them as plagues) and then release them. SL already had a bunch of bugs but we were able to live with them, now you have added countless more bugs to this game with these new features that no one can use because SL keeps crashing, lagging, etc. etc. etc. Grid attacks aside you all have to do better for this platform to continue to be as popular as it is.

OMFG!! Exactly what I have been thinking for the past month.

I wander if phil is still incharge of LL, or has he let them all down there run wild?

These things can happen just calm down
04-30-2006 14:24
Hey guys, calm down:) These crashes, lags can happen. This is not a simple software, a whole platform with tons of interacting CPUs, resident created scripts(problems) etc. Noone can create such a software witout any bug. LL is solving bugs so fast. Dont be so mad. They will solve it soon.

Oh wait this is not a question..
Hmmm.
ok here : ?

A Novel Idea for SL!
04-30-2006 14:31
Hi folks, Mitz here with a Novel Idea for Linden Labs and the future of SecondLife...

How about changing the focus of SecondLife development from Variety to Stability?

I have been a resident (yes a RESIDENT...not a player) of SecondLife since September 2004, and safe to say (like many of you) I have seen SecondLife grow with more and more variety with each upgrade.

For those of you that have been residents much longer than I, you too have seen this and moreso.

For some reason, it seems that the development FOCUS (key word there) has been to add more variety to the SecondLife platform, such as advanced media & scripting.

While this is all good in and of itself (hey I am a SCRIPTER and devote about 75% of my time in SL for this) I think that some of these things can take a back-seat in leiu of a more stable environment.

I'm not saying that LL should stop developing enhancements altogether, nor am I stating that LL isn't "trying" to develop a stable platform.

It just seems to me that these two very different development approaches are not prioritized properly... maybe its just my own perception.

What are YOUR thoughts about this? Am I correct, or just not seeing a bigger picture?

Personally, my objective would be to spend about 95% of my time developing a stable platform and maybe about 5% on enhancements and updates...

I mean, which is more important: Shiny Lights and Wiggling Prims, or Logging in?

I do, however commend LL for creating the Preview Grid, as this shows a decent intent to developing a more stable platform, but is it enough?

Please not that I am not trying to sound like a Ranting Maniac here...but it's true that the initial "road-rage" happens generally when there is a system crash. This is generally when I ask myself these questions..well this timeI decided to post them.

Hey...its all I can do at this point since I am not getting a refund for loss of time, nor is LL charging me (and YOU) less to compensate for it.

-Mitz

Their next feature: SECURITY
04-30-2006 14:33
Yes..the next feature that SL should offer should be security. But a hard task on an online venue becoming larger all the time. I was so into the idea of investing in more SL land, but will wait to see how this trend of the weekend grid attacks develops. One person said if someone really wanted to hurt SL, that a virus might even be spread? As in a real computer virus. I've had to delay a few builds recently due to these grid attacks. And the idea of the next step up to a true virus is not compelling. I just invested in a new pc.

All in all, I have faith in LL. Hopefully they'll call the perp's mom who's probably looking for her credit card as we speak. But, LL, pls call Psyra E. or some of the local genii for advice. You may need it.
