land on the edge

I bought a plot on the edge of a sim, cheap, less than 2k for 512, is it just a matter of time before there will be something connected to the 'blank' edge? if so will the value go up or down (best guesses based on experience plz!) or will it remain an undesirable backwater hidden from sight?

undesirable? i have edgeland and find it very desirable. turn disadvantage to advantage.

The effect on the value of your land depends on what that sim is. If they stick a telehub right next to your land then your land would increase in value maybe 10 times over. If its a steep snow covered hillside, no effect. And anything between.

Edge land can take even 60 days to appear. It is usually not waterfront, usually it is land in my experience, you just never know. I have seen edge land become valuable because it then looked on to an awesome view into the next sim, like Osterhout did with Sutherland. And I've also seen edge land just aquire another flat neighbour and they all get crapped up as flat nothing 512s until someone can buy all of them and put something more coherent on them. It can be annoying bouncing off the sim edge all the time as you try to build or plant.

sweet!!! thanks guys, I figured it was going to be connected eventually!! I made a shop there this morning and someone floated by so it can't be too undesirable!

daz it looks like from what i've seen that the Lindens like coasts. if your edge is just a straight cut off edge of land you'll probably have something connected to you eventually but no telling when cause there are so many edges like that now. if you're on an edge but it's water front then you're safer.

thanks Zuzi, yeah I doubt it will be a waterfront, even if the next sim is coastline I'm sure Anshe Chung's robot land grabbers will buy it all up before I get a chance (like they did yesterday to all the former gov. Linden land behind my first land) but it'll be a nice surprise to see what happens!!

You would think edge land would be desirable with all the complaining people do about the view. Thats one less direction that you have to look at your neighbors ugly ass houses.

either that or have a whole bunch of people buy land for a group at the same time, I mean how does the same person buy ALL of the land that just went available? I'm not bitching at Ms. Chung, she has every right to buy the land and it obviously wasn't firstland and the price she set is quite reasonable, but it's distressing to know that one person can buy everything at once, shouldn't there be a limit on how much land you can buy at one time, say one plot an hour or something?

auctions? i think they stay owned by Lindens until the auction's over so even tho they're for sale they don't show it in SL. just a theory.

that makes sence, if you are rich you can bid on every single auction but does "gov. Linden" auction land? as that land was not for sale and owned by gov. Linden hours before every last bit of it was sold to the same person....

Thats a terrible idea. What is there are 4 512 plots next to each other I want to buy to make one big 2048 plot. I'd have to wait 3 hours to get the whole thing while praying no one shows up and snatches part of it while I am waiting.

yeah that wouldn't work but the odds say you probably wouldn't even get the second peice of land as the land barons can buy everything available all at once with either robots or people working for them, you are just one person, you might get lucky with one peice of land at regular price....

That is jsut not true. Land isn't being bought up faster than my hands can move if I am standing next to it. And from what I know of scripting you can't have objects buy for you. As for people, why would another person be able to buy land I am standing in front of faster than I can? If their are robots and employees buying land then you wouldn't slow them down, you would screw regular people with no robots or employees to buy the land for them.

ok then, the only answer left is that no one, out of 100,000 or so wanted all the nice land behind mine so Anshe just walked around and bought it all one after another, wow I suppose I should have taken the day off of work....

The land barons have scanners that tell them when land is for sale faster than the information can find its way out manually through forums posts and so on, and maybe just as fast or a teensy bit faster than the refresh rate on the Land for Sale list in the game.

But they don't have the capacity to actually buy land through robots. Some of them have alts and staff officers in their group who are able to fly out and buy land fast.

The usual reason why it seems as if a land baron "bought up" all the land next to you then chopped it up into 512 squares for ready sale is because they bought a large tract on the auction from Governor Linden. The land might sit fallow for days because no baron will ever pay any tier before its time. I believe there is 7 days until you have to claim land purchased at auction then tier up to pay for it. During the 7 days a baron might sell some land to match the tier level needed. Then it goes for sale quick suddenly next to you, creating the impression that whole swathes of land that you thought was forest suddenly goes for sale. I remember when I was new I used to marvel at this capacity for entire tracts of land that seemed beautiful and desirable constantly going to the same person who then gets it and resells it. But that's because the Lindens put it openly available on a public auction, but not very many people bid for it, because they don't have the resources or don't chose to spend their RL money on such a risky investment.

There is some disagreement as to whether just a few oligarchs buying and reselling land is "better" for SL because it leads to better parceling and stabilized and lower prices or whether it's good if the barons have lots of competition, but which leads to higher prices in the short run anyway because more barons and wannabees makes especially the 512 wars cause higher prices. These come down some when the public exercises its good judgement and doesn't fall for high prices on 512s induced by chopping and bidding wars in the initial generation of sales after first-landers sell. I think in some ways it never pays to buy a 512 within 30 days of its birth because its price will often go down if it is in a "normal" area ie not telehub or waterfront.

thanks Prok, I didn't know that gov. Linden put land up for auction, it said 'not for sale' then suddenly was sold, maybe they need to change the land info to say, 'land available to bid on'...

If you select land owners in you will view auction land as purple, land for sale as yellow, your own will be green, and the rest is red.

yes but what starts out as "protected land" often later mysteriously turns into land for auction.

Do you have a specific case of that happening, Walker?

My understanding is that it never has, or never should have.

I think it only seems like a conspiracy because we don't sit and wait for it to be changed from protected to auctioned, I mean I go to work and when I come back there are massive changes, I don't check the land all the time, the land barons do, let 'em have it, I'd rather look at flying monkeys than land prices...

this is true. but groups also have 7 days to replace missing tierage. so after the first week, they can shift that much allocation from one group to another and secure the land for another week without paying any extra tier fee. it's like shorting stocks; you have to find buyers one place or another within the two week period or pay the fees. but it helps the brokers get by and still eek out a tiny profit at the end of the month.
