So I'm sure most of you have heard that the forums are going offline next month. Where will you post/will you post, after the SL forums are gone forever?
No more drama, no more crying, no more BUY! or ZOMG SELL!

I'm surprised theres no cheap L$ for sale at the moment... I would have thought that a majorly bad business decision like this would have sent alarm bells through some of the big traders and they'd have been dumping millions at a time for a quick sale.
Bit late now mind, considering I bought more land (and cash to buy it) 3 hours before the announcement, but that's the way it goes sometimes *shrug* Lewis _____________________

Why do you think this will affect their business Lewis? I know some people seem to think that these forums are more important than SL itself and use them as a gathering place, but presumably they are not the big traders you talk of. I'm new around here though, so might be talking rubbish. Albion |

I'm new around here though, so might be talking rubbish. Those who use Second Life as their livelihood need a stable community to operate in. Instability caused by big announcements can cause big problems. The thing is, the forums enable you to gather opinions from people all through the day all around the world. Otherwise I'd be only talking to people who happen to be in world during the same 4 hour time slot that I manage daily. Every time there has been a major change to 'the way things are', there are panic sells as people expect everything to go belly up. A lot of people have been saying they'll quit... how many will is another matter though. Lewis _____________________

Every time there has been a major change to 'the way things are', there are panic sells as people expect everything to go belly up. The forum seems to spread panic though, if this week is anything to go by. I've got a lot out of the forums in my brief time here, but I can see the problem with them. Like many online forums they've become a whingefest. There's plenty of useful info but there's a lot more ranting and raving. For the forums to be viable I think they would need to be moderated and the decision has obviously been made to concentrate efforts elsewhere. Albion |

Well, for those who like to read what I write (ha, you crazy people), I'll be writing in my blog, at SL Universe, and Second Citizen. Also in the ITLP Forums, but I'm not providing a link to that so

Those who use Second Life as their livelihood need a stable community to operate in. Instability caused by big announcements can cause big problems. No they don't they need a stable platform and a steady supply of buyers. Neither the community fragmenting nor some old pissed off people with full inventories cycling out to be replaced by new people with empty inventories means there has to be trouble for in world business. The thing is, the forums enable you to gather opinions from people all through the day all around the world. Otherwise I'd be only talking to people who happen to be in world during the same 4 hour time slot that I manage daily. True here I fully expect the community to fragment badly and an increased disconnect between users and SL. However the same is true in RL and business still operates. The same will apply in SL. Every time there has been a major change to 'the way things are', there are panic sells as people expect everything to go belly up. Rather than a simplistic predictor major change = panic sale you need to look at what the change is and why it is believed to have a harsh negative impact on the value of the linden to predict a panic sale. A lot of people have been saying they'll quit... how many will is another matter though. Personally I won't attempt to follow the community to another forum. I'll no longer be part of the community but I won't leave the game. And since LL is rejecting our feedback I eat whatever shit they serve each wednesday till the game can no longer provide what I want from it then I will quietly leave the game... Just as I quietly cancelled plans for expansion and tiered down 9 sims when LL policies wrecked havok with business. |

I honestly don't think this change will impact the number of people entering or staying in Second Life significantly.
My experience with forums for MMOGs is that they develop a false sense of resident consensus. Typically, a fraction of a percent of the world's population ever looks at or cares about the forums. I see a few hundred people here with literally thousands of posts under their belt...basically, to a large extent, they are talking to themselves. Yes, there are some very valuable conversations that start up here...but those seem to me at least to be the exception rather than the rule. I think its unfortunate that Linden Labs feels compelled to shut the forums down, but frankly I don't blame them. Filtering out the noise becomes an exercise in futility when 90% of the content is noise. The people who play the forums like a game in itself, who post twenty or thirty times a day...they will find a new home, and might even be happier since they can post with fewer restrictions. As for the people looking for useful information...I don't think most of them will miss the forums at all. |

Most people never look at the forums. Of course, most people quit Second Life after a week or so, too. What Second Life needs is to lighten up, for crying out loud. It used to be a friendly community of fun loving people, and now not even the elves can get along.
So what the heck am I going to do with my lunch hour now without being able to read all the griping on the forums? _____________________

Most people never look at the forums. I kind of suspect that when people burn out on SL they start spending more time clinging to the forums... until LL does something egregious enough that they can finally stomp off in a bunch of public noise and fury blaming LL. And because some percentage of the forum population is likewise on the SL burn-out track you get a lot of the validating "me too!"'s. I wouldn't say the forums are a breeding ground for malcontents, but perhaps more of a watering hole instead |
