Some of the cars there have special setups for variable speeds, flying (on optional models), and auto-fixing the sim cross issues. Oh, also 'guest driver' mode and other fun things.
In the interests of disclosure, they are hosted on land I rent. But I'm not using much of it anyway.

Right, back on topic - I've heard a lot on both sides regarding the want or need for roads. One of the main reasons for roads was to develop a form of continuity between sims, bind them together naturally. There are other ways to do that - such as water and rail - which I've also seen done relatively well too.
I think it boils down to how you intend to enjoy SL. Going back to my above mentioned island, it is four quads of a sim split with these tall mountain-like ridges. And it works somehow, probably since there is so much land to terraform that it can be made to match the area.
I would not be so quick to judge the all-island showings mentioned above. I've yet to visit, but has anyone pulled out a sailboat and tried to use it there? Security objects notwithstanding of course.
