So, there's no public land key in the world map anymore. I inquired about it and was told by LL that public land is a thing of the past, period. Good? Bad? Badgers?

Land that you, or rather some land baron with a scanner, could claim from the map for L$1/sq. m. - the money was removed from the economy.

Public land is land that has been abandoned. Once abandoned the land turned orange on the map and in plain view and went up for sale for 1$L per sqm.

I learned one day while standing 10m from some and I didn't know what the orange color was about. A couple secs later a land baron as Eggy said poofed in and bought it. They were nice enough to sell it to me though for a 4x mark up then what they paid! :)

Great, at least now when I release land I know where it guareenteed to go and I get the amusement of watching an auction of a tiny little micro plot.

OK, well, since I never knew it existed, I guess I won't be unhappy that it's gone. I guess.

Bigger lots will be sold for USD, so goodbye money sink.

Goodbye group land when a rogue officer abandons it, don't expect LL to listen to appeals.

Governor Linden can reclaim the land into his tier, no more residents using their tier to absorb and resell land. Before 1.9, land went one from one paid tier into another paid tier. Not any more, LL is incapable of keeping up with auctions to this point, now the influx of small plot will certainly strangle them, or take away from other more important issues.

The major part of abandoned land are plots under 48 sq m, usually near blue signs or other undesirable areas. LL staff will now have to visit each one, return objects, terraform, set up for auction, collect money, account for what.....25 cents?

A handful of residents made a modest living at minimum wage doing LL's land management.

Now thats gone.

GOM'd again.

Your little plot in Sutherland was abandoned. I claimed it, you bought it. It was a win-win situation. Now you will pay LL directly. They killed the middle man, killed another business and created themselves a monster.

Just wait til I release all mine, some poor Linden will take days to make them available for auction, and thats no guarantee they will sell.

Average auction price...4/sq m. multiply by 16 sq m = 48 Lindens. that equals 16 cents........... WTF are they thinking?

Returning objects, terraforming, listing for auction, collecting money, accounting for that amount (if it sells) is fucking insane.

I always liked public land.

Back when I was building my first park in Atis, there were two lots that I wanted to add to the park. One was abandoned and a land trader picked it up and re-sold it to me below market. The other one was reclaimed by Linden Lab when a group folded and was put on auction. It eventually auctioned at 4 dollars above market. And it took forever for it to be auctioned. I got the abandoned land almost immediately.

I know folks were upset about land scanners, but public land mostly worked much better than auctioned land ever did.

Thats right Shack.

LL created themselves a nightmare here, scanners are now a moot issue, but LL has done themselves a great disservice by causing several land people to tier down, so they can play the land game themselves.

gosh remember when we used to just release land we didn't want to use anymore and then we'd go buy more and then release it and go buy some elsewhere and stuff of course the linden had no real value then and land was relatively cheap anyway and we'd fly around with land owners on and objects off and look for GREEN public land to buy and resell or give to people in the sims because we thought it was a good idea for sims to be owned by as few people as possible in fact we wondered why LL didn't make the sim itself the smallest unit of ownable land especially if we were mostly gonna rent anyway

oh sorry, i meant to say HAIR!

welllll if someone incorrectly abandons land I'm pretty sure now they'll be able to return it to the original owners, no fuss no muss.

unless they go and say "nyah nyah, too late, so sad, we're nasty land barons and we're going to mark up that incorrect abandonment for 4x on the auction"

ok now THAT would be funny. I suspect the karma gods would rain pain and grief upon them, though.

How do you expect LL to resolve a group issue? Lets say a rogue officer abandons it, or a jilted lover gets mad and abandons it. Do you think for one second that LL will show you the time day?

LL is notoriously famous for not intervening into disputes, don't expect no fuss no muss.

The best you can expect is the email blackhole of support@secondlife.com

Well, I'd like to think they'd return it to the group or whoever in the group wants it.

It would be pretty evil of them to profit off of someones mistake considering how they chastised so many public land barons for profiting off of someone elses mistake.

I suspect if it happened too much (became a support hassle) they'd probably redesign land abandonment.

My guess is that it's gonig to happen rarely enough that LL won't really care about returning it.

Well, I just released a 16m2 block to see what happens and it does indeed go to Gov Linden. At least, it works the way they say.

It was always really fun for me to read the release notes that talk about how only lots less than 512m2 would be public. It never worked that way.

It was land that went up for public grabs. Normaly it happened because someone released the land. (didn't want to pay the tier fees anymore, quit sl ...) In the very begining there was a land grab you bought as much L$1 per m land that you could afford in L$. Good times :) Now with the advent of scripts that scoop it all up, it's probably best that LL is selling it again. I mean come on we don't want ppl getting rich off sl we want LL getting rich off sl right.
