2 options are not enough.
My poll was a response to the previous pole, to the ones who are trying to FORCE people that "Second Life is a Game".
Yes more options should exist, is there any way to edit and add more options?

i put all of the above but my real answer is that while there are a lot of games played inside SL, the actual technology itself is not a game.

I don't know why there is any issue with this. Isn't a game defined by something that you can play and try to solve or beat other players in? The only thing I see that beating other players in Second Life would be to make the most money. The that would be the same thing as playing the game of Life. Now there are games to be played inside second life in which second life is the tool to get there. For me its sort of a hobby in which I like to make things. I still can go to the casino and play a game

Where's the 'who fucking cares? why does everyone have to define and pigeon-hole every fucking thing?' option?

SL is a game to me.. platform to others who knoes what else to tohers.
SL is as individual as the person participating/playing/joining. There is no way to solidly define it. |

Poll should be check boxes instead of radio buttons.
To me it is some of these things but not all of these things. (its AND, not OR... and not ALL or NONE). -Ghoti _____________________

I choose all the above. There are just too many things SL is to so many different people. I really don't think we would ever see enough total choices as to what it can be to fit everyone.

I'd tick the "A funky but quirky bit of software that often lets me do what I want and sometimes doesn't, but I almost always have fun using it" option...
![]() Also there should be an "It's a major drain on my credit card but who cares" option as well... ![]() _____________________

I agree with Ghoti - although I voted all of the above.
I think the thing with SL is it's different things to different people, depending on what you bring to it, and what it is for you probably changes over time too. |

I am a new player, and find this argument hilarious.
Yes, this is obviously a game. If it were any of the other options, you would not have limited resources or people competing for those resources. Any time you have resources involved, that = game. But even without resources it might STILL be considered a game. Roller Coaster Tycoon or Sim City in Sandbox mode is still a game, even if you play it in God mode. SL is no differnet. Just because there is no grinding or levelling doesnt mean it is not a game (btw...the weekly allowance could be considered equivilant to levelling IMO). People on here need to stop pretending that SL is somehow "above" other games. I could see something like this evolving into more (a 3D interface for an IM client or something). But for now, but it is still just a game. A fun game, but a game nontheless. |

It seems to me that the question has been posed in an ambiguous way. There is a distinct difference between the 'technology' (the platform we all use) and the use that people make of it. I can buy a copy of 'Sim City' (a game), and USE it as a paperweight. I think the question ought to be 'How do YOU use Second Life?'
Now, in answer to THAT question. no it is obviously NOT a game... not for me, at least. (Sorry Frack, but I could not disagree more.) SL is where I come to see my friends and to socialize. It is no more a game than going out on a date or hanging out with my friends is a game. SL is a part of my everyday life. I suppose you could argue that everything in life is a game, but that is stretching the point a bit, don't you think? For somebody else, SL could easily be a game. But not me. |

[My opinion]
(yes) 1. An activity providing entertainment or amusement; a pastime: party games; word games. 2. (yes) 1. A competitive activity or sport in which players contend with each other according to a set of rules: the game of basketball; the game of gin rummy. (no) 2. A single instance of such an activity: We lost the first game. (Ha!, no) 3. games An organized athletic program or contest: track-and-field games; took part in the winter games. (maybe) 4. A period of competition or challenge: It was too late in the game to change the schedule of the project. 3. (not really) 1. The total number of points required to win a game: One hundred points is game in bridge. (maybe) 2. The score accumulated at any given time in a game: The game is now 14 to 12. (sorta) 4. The equipment needed for playing certain games: packed the children's games in the car. (tangental) 5. A particular style or manner of playing a game: improved my tennis game with practice. 6. Informal. (definitely) 1. An active interest or pursuit, especially one involving competitive engagement or adherence to rules: “the way the system operates, the access game, the turf game, the image game” (Hedrick Smith). (most definitely) 2. A business or occupation; a line: the insurance game. (No; sometimes) 3. An illegal activity; a racket. 7. Informal. (on the forums yes) 1. Evasive, trifling, or manipulative behavior: wanted a straight answer, not more of their tiresome games. (probably) 2. A calculated strategy or approach; a scheme: I saw through their game from the very beginning. (relevant) 8. Mathematics. A model of a competitive situation that identifies interested parties and stipulates rules governing all aspects of the competition, used in game theory to determine the optimal course of action for an interested party. 9. (be vewy vewy quiet, I'm hunting SecondLife) 1. Wild animals, birds, or fish hunted for food or sport. (no) 2. The flesh of these animals, eaten as food. 10. (again, more forums related) 1. An object of attack, ridicule, or pursuit: The press considered the candidate's indiscretions to be game. (definitely forums related) 2. Mockery; sport: The older children teased and made game of the new comer. |
