I'm looking for anyone familiar with the RL practice of GIS or any other form of mapping so that I can start creating an up-to-date website devoted to mapping SL and all the information that might pertain to it. There is large demand out there for an organized collection of sim information that the Lindens simply don't compile and make public. We, the people could get something like that done if we tried.

contact me in-world if you think you might be able to help

I know that at least a couple of people currently have sites devoted to maps in SL, Bino Arbuckle ( http://www.slmaps.com ) and Cadroe Murphy (I don't have his URL). Either one of them would be good contacts regarding mapping out the SL grid. Oh, and Carnildo Greenacre talks about his work on mapping SL in this thread. :)

Heh. I'm taking a GIS class right now (my minor will be in GIS). I'd be interested in anything you find out :)

Whoa, totally missed this thread along the way. Guess I need to check forums more often. Anyhow, some information for Lefty (and others interested):

Cadroe's site is located at http://www.geocities.com/goreldin/Cartifex/, and has terrain maps rendered in 3DSMax.

Also check out Adam Zaius' maps at http://maps.secondserver.net/, which has ownership maps as well as some other stats.

Rathe Underthorn also did a mapping, titling it "Land Barons" and it was the most complete ownership map at the time. It's at http://www.thirty4.com/~second/barons.html and you'll want to click on the words "land barons" to see the actual world map, which you can further click per sim to get the breakdown there.

Unfortunately due to the resource constraints of mapping the grid, these ownership and terrain mappings are more or less one-off things. But I know that Cadroe, Adam, and Rathe are always developing something new for SL, which may (not) be map-related.

The SLMaps site that Bino Arbuckle runs is fairly up-to-date but doesn't have the granularity the other sites have, as it simply keeps track of grid expansion. But the ability to see the grid at a certain date is neat. Also has some other Linden-created map resources.
