In correct grammar, one uses the masculine term if one does not know the gender of the personage or persons.

Quite true in the 1950's.

These days it's considered just as acceptable (and possibly preferable) to use the plural, but gender neutral, pronouns instead. "they" "their" “them” etc.

Of course there is also the argument "Who gives a crap?? We were talking about economics, not English!"
