Without Second Life, there would be no economy. Killing stipends would kill Second Life. Figure out the logical conclusion of that for yourself, Einstein.

This is not really a logical comment following on JB's assertion that LL is running short.

Bingo!

"Your World. Your Imagination."

I realize these are growing pains for many of our residents, but the sooner they accept the fact they will no longer be directly subsidized by LL with free handouts, the better off they will be.

Besides, the numbers tell the story. SL keeps growing and growing and growing.

No matter how much one whines, cries, or forecast "doom and gloom" scenarios, as long as SL continues to grow and prosper, they will continue to be empty, baseless, and unfounded "doom and gloom" scenarios.

Dwell was not free hand outs. It was Linden Labs paying content providers for providing content to their growing number of customers who come to SL to do more than stand in a sandbox. Without the content providers Linden Labs would have to take a large portion of that $11 Million dollar investment they just got and hire content providers to create something to do so everyone didnt go play Everquest.

Yes, venues are closing all over the place without suport from the company that benefits from their existence. Linden Labs wants free content and I wish them luck in achieving that goal.

Seems very logical to me.

All the time, the active current playerbase depreciates slowly as individuals stop playing. That's a given in any game.

New players come in, find they can't do very little, so they miss out on so much of the fun of playing SL. Most of them give up and never come back - even more than currently do so when they had startup money. Face it, the majority of SL's purpose is creating 'stuff', whether it's for your own enjoyment or to sell, and people can't experiment or upload textures on no cash, or even buy a L$1 bundle - which means they have to hang around camping chairs or money trees (two of the 'communist handouts' that are damaging to the game far more than stipends). Would you want to spend an hour sitting in a camping chair just to upload a texture, then spend another hour there when you realise you need to make some changes to it?

So... the playerbase dwindles, and as the percentage online out of the percentage of population decreases (you honestly don't think people will say a quarter of a million players but only 4000 online) it looks less and less impressive.

Less people playing means more and more 'just breaking even' enterprises become less and less viable, so they scale down and quit, giving less and less stuff for the few newbies that wander through to do, making the landscape look more and more like a barren wasteland.

If the players disappear and SL isn't making any money, it closes - simple as that. Then there is no economy for anyone to worry about.

What is it that you do here that's "so much fun" that requires you to spend a lot of $L, which you would miss out on if you didn't have any $L?
