Knock a zero off land prices

Why shouldn't land prices in Second Life all be slashed by 90%?

When you spend the equivalent of sixty quid on a piece of land, you're not even buying the land. You're buying, basically, nothing. Once the land is bought, you obviously still have to pay tier to Linden Lab, so what exactly is changing hands other than a few access rights?

I propose that land prices should be changed by LL to a tenth of what they are now. It would mean that a few fools who should have known better than to invest in scotch mist will lose out, but in the long term, it will have a beneficial effect on the world.

Those few individuals who already possess the real life resources and believe that there is big money to be made on buying up vast swathes of land will no longer have as much of an incentive to do so, those without as much money will be able to buy larger amounts of land and be more creative, and it would bring an end to the auctions --> land baron --> markup --> clubmallcrap sprawl process that happens in every single new sim now.

How about Linden Labs just run Second Life as a public service rather than a business.

Feel free to ignore the cost of staff, servers, buildings, utilities, etc. Perhaps the City of San Francisco should just slash 90% off the cost of living for everyone involved at LL.

And gods forbid that LL should set aside funds for future development, or *gasp* make a profit.

LL don't make money from land sales, except to those people who buy at auctions.

Unless I am mistaken, all land for sale recently at least started off in auctions. I recall LL saying that they would continue to sell through auctions because it was an essential source of revenue for them.

Unless LL restricts all land sales to only between them and us, then "land barons" of course will buy and try to sell for what the market will bear. If people don't buy, or LL releases more land, prices fall. I was here when prices went up to the $L 10-18 range, and that is exactly what happened.

Collaterally, the Lindens do make money from the land middlemen in that all the land brokers that I know of carry an insane tier.

Land prices are an outlet for Lindens too, keeps down the inflation. There aren't that many currency drains in SL that take money out of the economy.

I bought some land which is just dedicated for newbies to live on which doesn't make me any money, id be a bit peeved off if they knocked a 0 of the price.

And at auction prices start at 1L$/sq.m but demand is there which sends thr price up so i think it would be impossibe anyway

Why shouldn't they?

Because it's not their place to tell others what they can sell things for. Thats price fixing, and it's wrong. If I want to sell 16 square meters for 500,000 lindens, or an entire island for 1 linden, that's my damn choice to make.

Well, that would be one linden plus 1 grand USD, since I've never gotten around to purchasing one... You don't mind that trivial extra fee, right? :D

The problem with that is if they forced people to resale land for a certain price then fewer people would buy it to begin with from auctions. And if no one is buying the auction land then they won't open up new sims for sale. The world would stop growing and we would be on top of each other. The land barons hold enough land with nothing on it to make sure I am not living next to a nightclub, casino AND mall all at once.

The vast amounts of land for sale, particularly in the new sims, and land that stays up for sale for weeks and months suggests that the demand is not there. Cynicism is rising, more and more people are tiering down, and the whole thing is starting to collapse from within ...

Do you know how many years "the end" has been coming? "The End" is always coming, just doesn't seem to get here though.

There is no Land Demand causing prices to rise because LL is pumping too much land into SL. Its a Buyers Market right now.. And that sucks for landowners, but great for people looking to buy or noobs joining the game.

Wake me up when you see more than 2 sims worth of public land in-world. Then we'll know that the whole system is falling apart on itself.

Until then, if the world is 100% owned by players, then the system is working.

Translated:

I am pissed at what my neighbors build. It stems from the fact that in RL I don't have a view. I want more land but I can't afford it because I am going to college. Therefore LL should change the entire structure of the land market, just for me. Because I am that important. After all, I have been paying a tier for THREE whole months.

I can drink now. I've been posting here for ages, and you still have no idea where I live?

And no, I'm not calling you. You'd have my number then.
