Eventually, as current technology progresses, it's somewhat safe to say that roads will be used as a new form of entertainment.

Think about it, if roads in SL right now were as 'fast' as in the average racing game, then the vehicle economy would be huge. After all, I much rather drive in SL as part of an experience when I would want to visit nearby sims. This is one of the reasons why I would like LL to have roads in place throughout the new continents.

Regardless of their functionability, roads are still attractive, fun, and a vital part of SL's 'culture'.

Anyone tried taking a slow boat from the Cottonwood chasm in the west all the way to the east of the mainland?

Roads would be nice if you could get a decent road going vehicle with an enjoyable experience without the control craziness.

I do a fair bit of sailing - not to get anywhere particular.

I'd love to do an SL road trip too.

Kowalski, Max, Wyatt & Billy, Thelma & Louise, Mickey & Malory, Jake & Elwood, Bullitt, The Italian Job, need I go on...

Been painstakingly working on vehicles that behave properly. I've had a horrible time driving ground vehicles but I have a theory on why they are that way (I drive a lot iRL so I know how bad it is). I tested my theory using flying vehicles and it looks like I should be able to make a behaving ground vehicle soon.

Yeah, we need more roads. I like drive touring.

Funny suggestion

Since, in 1life in th U.S., automobile manufacturing is the number 1 revenue maker and the economy of the U.S. is totally dependent on motor vehicles, which require roads, I would suggest that SL might make drivable roads as a NORMAL part of SL's land as well as private islands. This would provide a unquestionable growth in possiblities. Now when we buy a car, we do so to motor around WHEN we can, but with drivable roads, vehicles would be a necessity, as they are in 1life.

Business that make cars, aftermarket items, on and on would thrive, grow, and business that relate to vehicles, ie: roadside properties, would become much wanted land. Shopping areas would spring up etc.

Airports and the like would then also come into play.

Just a suggestion : )

Sounds like you miss the macroeconomics of real life primitive materialistic economics.

Think of Second Life economy as a natural resource like Sea-Water compared to Oil.

It's easy to say that there is too little (renewable) oil, wich excuses the pricejumps. Funny because facts shows:

1. oil is a renewable resource (but it's hidden, unlike Sea-Water).
2. there hasn't been built ONE single refinary in US since 80's (yes at about that time oil reached all time lows of $10 a barrel). It's natural for a average oil baron to do whatever necesary to keep supply levels as low as possible. (imagine what would happen to SL land prices if LL stopped announcing auctions of new land, "theres more than enough land out in the open markets to satisfy the growing demands... reminds me of OPEC's 1990's attitude";).

Economies like sl require abit more than the understanding of macroeconomics, you actualy have to make atmospheres, and be hellova creative to survive in the long run (exceptionaly since RL estimates dont work ingame... Dwell did EXACLY the oposite than create user content... it only created user content once: "the chair that enslaved halv population to sit on their ass off all day and night doing theoreticaly nothing".)
Making Sea-Water a demanding commodity, is prety close to this future-economy, and the main reason why most people find sl so attractive.

So please we don't want that primitive economy model in this world too. (unless you let a little greedy lobby to run the Federal Reserve and put their chosen people into decision making org's like opec, eu, wto, un... only then people benefit from a such system, but those benefits are limited to that little lobby, rest of the community is enslaved to work all day like we got enslaved to campingchairs all day)

btw. recent studies proves that water has memory (now we need to figure out how to run scripts on that memory) ;)

Like automobile companies made race-cars and the airports switched from commercial aviation to sports flying in Larry Niven's All The Bridges Rusting. Of course, most of the freeway system just fell apart, with only a handful of the nicer ones maintained for racing, and the airports made most of their money as telehubs...

I think my post was misunderstood, or rather I wasn't clear enough.

SL SHOULD be for fun too ...at least in my humble opinion...and for those of us who love vehicles of any kind, I'm just suggesting the added "fun" capablity. Thats all I meant.
sooo...smile....

Btw...if the technology in building a car could be more "drivable" ..since I get the idea that they are not from these postings....then driving them wouldn't be so difficult...Unfortunatnly I don't know how to build a car in SL...

I have several cars in SL..and about every other type of vehicle there is, and yes...it's not like the race car games for X-box, computer etc but still is sort of fun. : )
