Maybe, but I don't think so.
People like to have a view and the view in the sky is a long way from waterfront.
One could imagine different implementations of portal space that would kill the value of waterfront. If the private space could have the water ripple effect going out from it in all directions, it would effectively make a private island.
And here's where cost comes in. Currently, a very few people are willing to pay huge amounts of money for waterfront, particularly waterfront on the edge of a protected sim or on the edge-of-the-world. But a vastly larger number of people might be willing to pay a little bit more for their own private waterfront view in portal space.
I don't know. it's not why I'm interested in the portal idea, but if cost is one of the concerns, then it becomes relevant.

I like the way portals work in OpenCroquet.

From: Zepp Zaftig I like the way portals work in OpenCroquet. I based this proposal on the way portals work in Croquet. It's a really good way to move around a virtual reality I think. If SL did do it, we'd have the grid as a starting / jumping off point, and through each portal we'd have a linked set of like minded ideas and builds based on each owners personal tastes. I personally enjoy following those kind of chains. It's very much like a web-ring.

People like to have a view and the view in the sky is a long way from waterfront. If you can have your waterfront view AND a big house that "feels like" it's right on the waterfront (if you go out the front door and you're there) by only buying 1024m, and the guy next to you can do the same thing without your big house blocking his view... I've kind of got this myself, without portals, using sit teleports. I've got a great all water build with a little island on it, PLUS a nice house AND an airport. It'd be even cooler if you could walk from one to another.
