I just checked my e-mail to find this announcement from GOM.
We regret to announce that Gaming Open Market will be stopping all trading of L$ effective 10pm eastern time Sunday October 2nd. After that, the site will remain open long enough to allow everyone to withdraw their cash and L$ balances.
This choice has not been made lightly. However, we feel that closing the L$ market to concentrate on other projects is in the long-term best interests of GOM.
Thank you all for taking part in what was for us an interesting adventure.
Tom Merrall President - Gaming Open Market Corp.
I don't really know what to say...
Yes I just saw that someone posted about it in the Economy thread..guess that's what I get for not looking first!

What is the point of having a virtual economy if one cannot convert L$ to US$? Are we expected to go through IGE or Anshe *shiver* now? What is their reason for closing? Oh, the humanity!

My friend with the one hundred sixty thousand linden dollar balance should have sold them a long time ago, huh?
Market is falling apart. Or I am totally wrong?

So are we going to see a 1929 style run on GOM, with lots of people dumping $L?

I'm sure people will find a way to get by without us. As for the reason, I think Jamie's farewell message said it more eloquentky than I could. T.

Yup got the message, and what is wrong with IGE or Anshe? The rates are competitive and they are more convenient IMO

I think I would rather see a panic. I like chaos! Wonder what this means for Ginko?

Technically, LL will do neither. All they will do is integrate GOM-like functions into SL itself so you can more easily buy and sell from other residents, with LL as the intermediary.

~Ulrika~ Ulrika, Lindens will not buy or sell, they will simply create a system for players to sell or buy from each other, essentially like GOM. Lindens will process the real world transactions.

Just wait until the morning when the rest of the world sees this. I'm the rational one. Is there somewhere I can go to get the nickel summary of the situation? ~Ulrika~

One less competitor -- I wonder if there'll be anyone else to take up the slack?

a note of thanks

I just wanted to take a pause here and thank Jamie and Ricky for bringing something novel and valued to SL and for the amount of time, effort, aggravation and even their spirit invested into this endeavor. Prior to GOM's invited entry into SL the L$ was play money only valued in-game. It would be far kinder and even more generous to thank them for providing a service that was well regarded and highly used.
GOM could have chosen to walk away with all the deposits on hold and throw them in a vTrashcan, but they didn't. They could have taken the L$ on deposit and distributed them equally among any set of players they chose, but they didn't Anyone who thinks that GOM owes them anything at all should consider themselves fortunate that GOM is taking their leave as graciously and as upstandingly as they are. If you think that your want imposes an obligation on anyone to provide a service for you then kindly come wash my car for me because I want, nay demand, it.
I think it only testment to just how valued your work has been that you are now being vilified by people who, with no basis at all, feel that you are depriving them of some "right". Had your efforts not been so highly valued, the hue and cry would be but a whimper. A highly regarded vehicle creator has recently chosen to cease production of his products because there are other things he wants to do. Why was there not a similar demand from the people who have enjoyed the fruits of his labors that he "owed" the continuence of his business to them? They weren't there. Oh but we're talking about money now, so that's different.
I hope I'm not alone in offering GOM a hearty "thank you and may your future pursuits be pleasing".
