I have my shop on the mainland. Are y'all trying to tell me that I am going to be obsolete unless I can afford a private island?
More wonderful.

I don't think *anybody* is going to be forced off the mainland.
And I maintain the 9568m of West Trade Imports in the PG sim of Alice as well. I've got a bit of a tradition in that location. like it there, like my neighbours, and it's what made my island sim possible. So no fervent hate of the mainland here. What I do see happening: depressed areas being rennovated, and a strong *trend* for larger land-owning entities to generally take over. What will the mainland look like, Christmas 2008? I suspect there will still be beautiful areas, ugly areas, independents, and the usual clubs and blue signs. But the big change will be owned estates, within which there will be some pretty stunningly nice communities. _____________________

I like the vitality and eclecticism of the mainland. To me most islands seem sterile. I don't like matchy-matchy. I don't like tract housing and aesthetic zoning. Viva la Mainland! You may all do what you like on your islands - just don't assume everyone would appreciate it.

I've just been reading the town hall transcript and Philip said that there are around 1400 mainland sims. I blocked off 500 in my image on this thread, so I must have been wildly out I guess as we're talking about an error of around 4/5ths the size of the area I blocked off.

OK, I've bitten the bullet and counted properly
![]() This would mean that Governor Linden owns just over 38% of the mainland in total. _____________________

I have now also counted 515 visible private islands. That means there are 1826 visible sims on the grid. So, as a % of what's visible, 28% are private islands.
Taking Philip's town hall ratio of the mainland making up 2/3rds of the total sims then we could be talking of a figure of around an additional 150 invisible privte sims, taking the total number of sims to approximately 1976. Obviously this number can't be exact because we don't have a clue on: (a) how many invisible private islands there are, (b) how Philip arrived at his figures and how he rounded ![]() Finally, taking the private islands into account, the Governor Linden land holdings account for around 1/4 of all land mass in SL. Not sure what that says, but couldn't resist working it out ![]() _____________________

I wish they'd just put up lots for sale instead of going through the silly auction process.
All I had to say. _____________________

ll owns 36% of the mainland? 1- The figure provided was 'about', thus we do not know how precise it is. 2- A goodly amount of that LL owned land is in the form of roads, protected water, void sims, etc... Thus, it's virtually impossible to obtain a reasonable figure of how much sellable land the Governor is keeping off of the tax rolls. |

Using the figured Torley provided, yes. But there are two caveats; 1- The figure provided was 'about', thus we do not know how precise it is. 2- A goodly amount of that LL owned land is in the form of roads, protected water, void sims, etc... Thus, it's virtually impossible to obtain a reasonable figure of how much sellable land the Governor is keeping off of the tax rolls. 20% !?!?! |

The counter I have at the top of SLMaps shows 1275 mainland sims (and 43 on the teen grid).
It's dynamic according to my database, which is nearly up-to-date. I haven't added any of the Bulk Regions or their voids, and I'm behind the latest 40+ expansion of the southern island continent from last Friday (?) I believe Philip's numbers were 1400 mainland and 500 private islands from his town hall last Thursday. |
