I totally agree with StoneSelf, Desmond.

Although you are entirely right about the potential of Second Life TECHNOLOGY being far more advanced than the more usual 2d sales website I believe we need better equipment to trade. The issue with using Linden dollars for purchases and sales is okay if it is only virtual objects used within the sim solely.

However for Second Life to really take off from a commercial viewpoint you would need three things, a means of delivery in real life, a real currency, and finally a TOS which clearly state what first life products can be either purchased or sold (similar to Ebay)

All of this can be easy to achieve, and more to the point it would make all of us who hold either land or creative ability a lot of money in my opinion.
for the record... ll appears to not be interested in first life busines in sl at this time. and i suspect a large fraction of the sl population would scream bloody murder should first life business open virtual doors in sl. not to mention it will do strange things to the value of the l$.

I'm starting to understand your viewpoints; I see that both of you have reasoned, intelligent concepts in mind.

My view of it is a little different, but then, I'm perhaps more of a risk-taker.

In any case: I've discussed this with my tax accountant. At some point I shall be using Second Life for first world business.

When I do, I'll relay my good and bad experiences in as non-advertising a fashion as I can muster, here in the Land and Economy forum.

Desmond thanks for your reasoned comments, (and well done with the tulip thing)

Stone, perhaps the time has come to take a poll. Like many concepts I suspect it would very much depend on how change is effected. The teleportation issue change was a previous example. I can only say that as a general principle when the winds of change blow through first life business the wise man builds a windmill, rather than a wind shelter.

For those of us that are UK based, do we remember Sir Humphrey, in "Yes Prime Minister". As he so rightly said getting the right answer to a question (the result you want) depends on how you ask it. I will give some thought to that before (and if) I create a poll thread.

He also said that we can't have ministers running around knowing the truth.

what do you think a poll would achieve?

i think desmond had a better idea in "starting somewhere" department, which was to talk about what is possible, and (sorta) talk about what he was willing to put up with to run a business in sl.

and i know someone who is trying to create a business that is in sl, but isn't sl oriented per se.

i could get significant financial backing for some of my sl/fl business ideas... if my potential backers thought sl were a better business environment.

i forget who, but someone recently posted the image of the "chasm" between early-adopters and more general users.

ll could work on bridging that chasm. or at least give indications that it's going to bridge (or not bridge) the chasm.
