Tell me why this is such a horrid idea.

It's just too messy. It basically boils down to having many small sims. We've all seen the effects of sim borders. Also, you wouldn't be able to have physics enabled in your microsims because a single machine couldn't handle 20 microsims.

The whole point of a sim is that it has it's own CPU dedicated to it. How is a single machine going to be able to deal with 20 microsims?.

1) Sims don't have its own CPU, it has a CPU core. A server blade with 2 dual core processors is running 4 sims. And they all share RAM.

2) A tiny "microsim" takes up no more processing power and ram than a parcel in a sim of the same size.
- 65535 square meters of microsims will have the same CPU load that 1 sim does.

3) Virtual servers. If a sim (any size) is inactive, it gets shunted to a blade (note: "server" refers to the software, "blade" refers to the actual machine";) that has many many inactive sims on it. No one is there to realise that the FPS has dropped and ping times are a little high, so....who cares? If a sim starts getting high load, shunt it to a blade that's running with enough free CPU cycles to handle it. If this means that a private island with 100 people on it running 800 scripts each has a blade with 4 cores and 4 GB of ram all to itself, then so be it. None of those people will go, "OMG! THE LAGZORZ!" because there won't be any. D&D Online uses this meathod of instance processing. It distributes the load so that no one is ever in a lagfest. 900 people want the Dragon's Tavern? Ok, we'll make 30 instances and put them on 15 machines and there'll be 30 people in each (you can move from one instance to another freely). Obviously SL has only 1 instance of everything, but if you think of the Tavern as being a microsim and outside the Tavern as the region, voila. You can run 30 microsims somewhere else and clump them together to keep the load even.

Yep, I knew this. But I wanted to keep it simple. Each sim has it's own core. But for the readers that don't know what a core is, see Draco - The Hair Splitter.

But the point is that the OP wants to be free from the lag caused by neighbouring microsims. The only way that is going to happen is for each microsim to have its own core.

If two microsims share the same core then when somebody that is using the same core as you decides to rez 100000 physical balls, then you're going to feel it.

Yes, it's possible to "shunt" microsims around to other unused cores. But like I said, it's all very messy. Microsim borders will suck.

But it is an interesting idea and I do think the current grid/sim setup is a little wasteful when you consider that there's 100s of cores running sims that are inactive.

In my apartment in AO - It wasnt there all the time. It was "created" when I entered.

All the items I had in it were rezzed as I was entering.

Would something like that be possible here?

This would reduce the number of Microcosms needed at any one time quite a bit.

I think this idea is more important for its privacy aspects than its lag reduction aspects. If a dozen Micro cosms need to share the spot of one "normal" sim - then That would be the way it would have to be.

I'm so glad that I wasn't your neighbour. :)

The lag caused by your rezzing apartment must've been gruesome. Then again, I suppose it depends on how many prims your furniture was made from.

Well the OP was saying that he wanted privacy and freedom from lag. I personally feel that it will be much simpler for LL to just concentrate on lowering sim prices. Sims without physics enabled may be the way the way forward. It may be possible to host as many as 10 sims per machine without physics. Although at the moment, it seems LL is set on over charging for sims. Which is probably because demand has been so high.

There was no lag. But it wasnt a prim based place like SL and all the stuff was froma s mall list.

Why is the lag so bad? I can rez a 300 prims worth of building that takes up 50x50x50 and not cuase any noticable lag. On my end.

I voted option 2, mainly because I like the privacy concept, but don't understand the mechanics of your proposal well enough to be definitive on it. (I was a Liberal Arts major after all)

For the love of...

Microsim borders? WHAT BORDERS?
A microsim doesn't border anything. With the exception of the parcel basement idea, in which case it borders only the parcel it is a basement of.

And it's not messy. Go play DDO, you can't even tell that you're moving from one virtual server to another, no lag, no jitter when an instance switches CPUs.

On AO and Eq2 is a loading screen that takes a little while

But once its loaded its a low lag area - and no one but those games versions of the lindens can snoop on you.

I think we wouldnt mind a minute load if thats what it took.

Its not all that different from a private 3d chat room this idea.

-- topic reported (biased poll) --

Sorry I don't think it's in my charter to deal with biased polls and I'm not comfortable doing so. Using it to close a thread seems a bit extreme. On the other hand we have seen this suggestion before.

Well what Kyrah said is true, the poll is biased -

But polls are really just popularity contests around here and dont really mean anything.

Nothing is binding- and no one buts any credance in the results of biased or unbiased polls anyways.

The actual discussion hasnt been too bad. This is one of those things that if we ask for it Linden Labs would know if its realisitic or not to fit into their plan - I think.

If its not realistic they could shoot it down fast.

Then at least it will have been tried.

One thing - This open source server idea. Is it possible it would allow people to do this without LL having to?

I mean it could be an awesome business Idea if someone invented this after the open source server comes out.

Any sim needs to be present on the grid somewhere in order to tp over to it (which could be solved by a modified open source viewer).

What you can't get around is that the sim needs access to the database backend for your L$ balance, your friends, your IMs, your inventory, to be able to tp back out of it, anything rezzed in that sim and so on.

What? WHAT? WHAT? THIS IS JUST UNBELIEVABLE!!! MAY THE LORD HAVE MERCY ON OUR UNDERPANTS!!

BORDERS!!! BORDERS!! YOU KNOW!! BORDERS!!!

ARE YOU BLIND MAN?

and cut...

So now that we've got the dramatics out the way:

It's very messy. It's even messier than under your bed.

In Second Life, we can tell very easily when we move from one server to another.

Exactly!

...and when it's done right, they wont need to piss about trying to create microsims.

Okay

But what I mean is this open source server plan - will require an impressive server im sure to run a whole sim.

But what if people only wanted to run a small sim? Undersized?

Or several?

No, microsims also provide 100% undefeatable security.
Security that fliers and other travelers won't complain about.

You're really obsessed to shoot down this idea, when you haven't really given any good reasons why it's not a good idea to begin with. Why?

I did give reasons. Maybe you missed 'em. But let's not argue from now till eternity. I'm quite sure you could come up with a theoretical workaround to any problem.

The problems:

Lag

Privacy

I think there's easier solutions to the above problems than what you've suggested, and hopefully Linden Lab are working on them. They're a smart bunch. :)
