Of course it's worth it. If SL is going to be accepted in the mainstream it MUST support object importing. Otherwise, it remains propietary and, essentially, worthless. This is what happened to Active Worlds (AW) and its use of RWX (RenderWare script) from Criterion, who dropped support for RWX in RW3. Criterion replaced RWX with DFF but I heard even THAT format will be discontinued. The point is: propietary formats suck. 3DS is a common format that's been around for at least a decade or 2. For SL not to at least support that is just stupid and foolish. SL doesn't have to allow physics in imported models (right away) or even anything simple like changing overall color/texture (like AW does) but even those would be trivial.
The problem is: SL has an integrated "modeller" but it just sucks. SL tries to do too many things. While I would love to see an integrated 3DS Max-level modeller IN SL, until LL and Autodesk team up, I doubt that'll happen anytime soon (but it should--and it will in another app eventually).
Obviously, collaborative modelling is where 3D is heading towards, as is evidenced by 3DS Max's continued addition of asset management sharing. It's only a matter of time before multiple users can model simutaneously, creating the scene in real-time--just like a movie set. The integration of movies and 3D animation will only push this even further. Pixar's RenderMan may already have this capability, but Maya and Max (both owned by Autodesk now) are used extensively and more.
Will Autodesk eventually buy LL/SL and integrate some of its features? Who knows. But collaborative environment editing IS the future so LL better get on the ball and position itself NOW before it's left in the dust like AW...

From: Candide LeMay *takes away Eep's staff of necromancy* Tell me I'm wrong (and why)--I dare you. It's not necromancy but common sense. It only makes sense that multiuser environment design is going to happen since there's already multiuser gaming, multiuser web browsing (well, Firefox has some extensions for it anyway), teleconferencing, telecommuting, etc.

You are wrong on two accounts: 1) you stopped talking about what SL needs and what LL needs to do which is wrong because I lost a bet 2) resurrecting old threads (=necromancy) is wrong 'cause it confuses people. I don't disagree with what you say but what's the point of replying to a thread started 3 years ago? Start a new one

Start a new one Why? There's no reason to when a perfectly good thread already exists. I just wish archived threads could be replied to, too! Why are there some threads from years ago yet some archived threads not even 6 months old?!

From: Cottonteil Muromachi You actually plough through 2 years worth of posts daily Eep? No. I'm simply checking out Linden posts to get information for my SL page's SL improvements.
