Negative land voting

As everyone has seen, SL is littered with abandoned half-built eyesores. Some users buy land, start to build their dream home, then forget about it halfway through. Several weeks later, the objects are ugly, a hazard to navigation, and a drain on server resources.

SO... I think this demands a new SL feature: is there a way to register a negative vote about a user's property? Or some way to put pressure on users who leave half-built junk in the middle of an otherwise nice-looking sim?

I'm thinking of specific examples, but I shouldn't name names.

Am I opening a can o' worms here?

What if someone is on holiday for a couple weeks? Or some other real life situation occurs. No reason to punish for that.

As long as people are paying their fees you have to let them do what they want on their own land I think. So far unfinished builds havn't been added to the list of harrasments :p

Maybe a specific example would be a good idea. General punishment for unfinished builds is a bad idea. Everyone has different schedules/speeds of creation/personal goals.

Sorta like the two huge, flat glass plates in the middle of clyde with the smiley face over them? What are those, anyway?

Well... specifically I'm thinking of the three unfinished builds in Clyde around Trent's motorcycle shop. The galleon looks like it would be impressive if it were finished. The others... well... you can check them out for yourself. I guess it's a matter of opionion. I moved out recently, so it doesn't affect me personally anymore, but those are examples.

Maybe if a build has been untouched and doesn't recieve many votes or visits? There must be some objective way to measure the unfinished-ness of a build.

A suggestion of mine includes a way to add negative land ratings...

well i did not check the link on last post on neg land rateing i think it would be a good thing. In jess we have had a explosion of builing which in some ways is good. But at the same time we have builds that have sat for almost 2 months without any change other than massive foundations floating a few meters off the ground ground or massive simply textured hulks with no furnishings or use. Now i have rated the owners neg and I encourage others to do the same because they are massive wastes of space in a sim that is pretty popular at the moment. If i was going to be gone for more than a month or 2 i would have the consideration to take down my build or at least entrust it to someone else. Yet these folks have left them to fill up the land and teh prim count of the sim with no consideration for other people who actively use said sim. So why not be able to rate their horrible heaps neg and force them out.

I have an unfinished house that is sitting unfinished at the moment because I decided I wanted to use the upcoming bump maps.

I dislike this idea. You dont like a build? Dont vote for it.

I disagree that one should be able to neg rate because you dont like its state of doneness or dont like that style. Anyone who has rated anyone neg knows it usually follows that there is then a neg rate in return, deserved or not. No need to add another way to neg rate IMHO.

BTW I do believe you already can vote at a build for a builder. I've heard abt it but have not tried it.

I recant...

After a discussion with someone on the subject, and thinking about it, I don't think neg voting is a good idea. It would be too open to abuses.

I would, however, like to see a system of some kind to reward really good builders.

Since this thread committed suicide anyway here's a quick hijack attempt:

How about coming up with a way to stop the "revenge voting" when you give someone a negative vote? Or at least make it more difficult to determine that someone rated you negative. The only reason I think this would be a good idea is because if you have someone that's harassing/insulting/annoying/rude/acting immature/etc you shouldn't be penalized for giving them what they deserve. I haven't felt the need to rate anyone negative yet but I'd like to be comfortable hitting a griefer back if I ever want to.

How about hiding the changes made when you rate someone somehow, maybe by delaying them for a week or even a month? Are there any ideas being considered to stop revenge voting?

Wouldn't that provide protection to groups of people who gang up on you with negative votes?

I'm a newbie ...

... so I confess that my new home is "under construction," and so looks, um, less than optimal. I do try to get to it a little every day, so at least my nieghbors (hopefully) see that I'm making progress.

I did contemplate building a giant white tile "puff ball" shield round the thing to hide the work in progress. Has anyone done anything similar?

Interesting idea Piprrr. That's very considerate, but probably not necessary. Houses under construction are a common sight, as they should be!

Welcome to SL and enjoy your build(s)!!

if you find a cruddy build you hate just "edit" it and click the builder's profile button then negatively rate their building skill..

Thank you! :)

I'm hoping now that it's passed the critical "butt ugly" point and is at least a passable eye sore.
