Please add support for analog joysticks.

As far as I can tell it's been at least a year since this was brought up, so I'm bringing it up again now.

I am aware that people would like support for all sorts of weird and exotic input devices, and it is the multitude of sugestions for support for all of these that has blured the previous requests for joystick support. So to that end I would like to see asap, support for generic analog joysticks only.

If you would like support for all your other weird and wonderfull kit, please feel free to ask for it seperatly. It's not that I don't want support for all these other devices as well, but lets give LL a "SIMPLE" task and see if they can manage to get it in game without borking up anything in the process.

Use Jira. The old voting system (to which you provided a link) is less than dead.

Actually, there is a FREE program out there called "Joystick2Mouse". I use it myself when my wrists & fingers aren't in any condition to type on a keyboard.

It lets you map a joystick and it's buttons to keyboard keys.

Does this work well with the client? I know it seems forever people have been asking for this feature.

I would if I could make head or tail out of it :-s

The problem with Joy2Mouse is that the input from the joystick is way less than useless for things like flying compared to that of an analog joystick. My MS Sidewinder joystick already has key emulation built in, but all you can do is nudge with it in that mode. Also (and this may just be me) I can never get the arrow keys to work seperatly from the rest of the keybord when the chat window is open, so all I get is a string of wasd's across the screen.

What is needed is the facilities of a analog stick where the amount you move it is proportinal to the response, not keybord emulation. It seems ridiculous that after years of requests that something as basic as joystick support is still lacking, while voice, funky atmospherics and sculpties are being shoved down our throats.

To submit a new JIRA entry:

1. Goto http://jira.secondlife.com
2. Click "Log in" in the upper right corner, and login with your SL username and password.
3. Click on "CREATE NEW ISSUE" in the top menu.
4. Select project, and issue type. In this case it would be SecondLife Viewer and New Feature.
5. Click next.
6. Fill out the bug/new feature form...

Summary: Give the suggestion a brief title like "Add analog joystick support"
Priority: Set the priority for the issue. Crashes that are reproducible and happen to other people are probably the only things that should go under blocker. Unreproducible crashes or crashes that only happen to you, as well as bugs that seriously impede function of the program should go under major. Almost everything else should go under normal. This is a feature request and not a bug, and since SL is completely usable without this feature, I'd just leave it at normal.
Components: Select which component(s) this bug/feature involves. In this case it'd probably be user interface since it involves how the user interacts with the program.
Affects version: For new features just pick the latest version.
Linden Lab ID: Ignore this, this is just to link the issue to an internal LL bug report.
Environment: For a bug report typically cutting and pasting the info from SL's about box would be sufficient, plus anything else you think might be relevant. For a feature request you can usually just leave this alone.
Description: Describe how to reproduce the bug, or how the feature should be implemented.

You can usually ignore the rest of the options unless your either a programmer or submitting a bug report.

7. Click create.
8. Get other people to vote for your idea or bug if they like it/want it fixed.

For flying, I've used a program called Joy2Mouse before... If the vehicle is set up to use mouse input steering, its a reasonable simulation of an analog joystick.

As an interim measure it seems pretty interesting. Thanks for reminding me of Joystick2Mouse, I had downloaded it some time ago and hadn't ever gotten around to trying it yet. Now I'm having fun with setting it up for PvP melee combat :)

One of these days if I ever get enough free time (what's that?), I would love to add joystick support to the open source viewer and submit it to LL for review. Perhaps one of the more active OS developers will take that on soon, or at least we can hope so.

Sorry but thats not what I'm asking for, all that does is allow you to control a camera with a joystick. Maybe with some imaginative scripting you could get it to do what I'm asking for but why should we the customers do their jobs for them. The ability to use a joystick to move your avitar, and as a consequence a vehicle, should come as standard not as a user mod.

I've run courses teaching basic computing to people with no previous experience, and the mouse is far from intuitive. The biggest problem they have is keeping the thing on the desk. A mouse is an excelent means of navigating menus, but not for controling movement. Which is why you do not find mouse control on the space shuttle.
