OK, today I was thinking that it would be great to have streaming music for stores and events.

Perhaps using the same mechanizm that they are going to implement for streaming voice chat, they could maybe give us a function utilizing it for retrieving a stream from the web.

Basically, instead of pointing to our IP address as the source of the stream, point to a streaming server or file on the web?

Just wanted to put it out there.

As for MIDI of all things...

I don't see any reason why people shouldn't have the option of using MIDI. If MOD is better, then people will still use it for needs that requre it.

That's no reason to exclude midi. Besides songs, midi can be used for sound effect like door bells or computers, playable instruments etc.

What I really want is for midi to be incorporated into the client so that we can program playable instruments in world. For instance make a guitar or a piano that uses midi instead of having to upload a sound file for every key on the piano.

It could be used for elevator music, or all sorts of things.

I.E.

Or maybe the whole thing is just impracticle. I don't know, I just come up with the ideas, not the details. LOL. If it's not going to be worth the effort then let's just drop the whole thing.

What about people like me? I've got a SB16 PCI card -- it's got decent wave and CD audio playback, and is backward-compatible with the ISA SoundBlaster 16 -- important for playing old games. But the MIDI output is horrible, and I don't think it supports sound fonts.

It's fine with me, since I can mute MIDI on the sound control panel. I just don't want to see only MIDI.

Ok, this Idea is really important, and I think the last one before I flood the forum by posting all of these separately. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Except for the MIDI one, that one has gotten enough attention already. And there was already one on web textures so I'll exclude that too, anyways I'm rambling...

Ok, today's idea is:

-------------------
Cascading Scripting Sheets(?)/ or Full Blown Object Orientation -

Well, I don't really have a good name for it, but it's basically the same idea as CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for the web except it's for scripts.

Because we can't really create classes which can be called from separate scripts (or can we?), it would be good to have a way to link parts of a script to another script file. That way when we are running the same script on many prims, it will be easy to change them by just changing one script file.

Or we could just rewrite the whole system to use full blown classes and object orientation with inheritance and pollymorphism ;-)

Of course this is intended to work only for primatives within the same linked object, and not across objects. We don't want people to buy things that have code which can change at anytime. LOL, even though that might be funny.

Just a note about 3D Mirrors

You don't have to ray-trace to obtain reflections, as long as the surface you are seeing the reflection on is not smooth. For each planar surface, algebraicaly reflect the line from viewpoint to surface center, and the surface normal. Then invert the reflected vector at an equal distance, and then do a sub-render of the scene from THAT viewpoint, at low resolution. That sub-render BECOMES the texture for that surface. It DOES cause a substantial rendering speed hit, since it has to render a whole new image (offscreen, and at low res, but it still incurs a hit), and it cannot handle multiple reflections (ie, only one bounce). But it can be done. It's similar to 'beam-tracing' another scanline render method for doing reflections.

That sounds like a great idea and I think it should work across objects too with the stipulation that you own the objects.

I agree, I have been asking for this since i first came into SL and culdnt belive we dont have this yet have transparency.

In Moove which is a less impressive complex building set up than SL, they DO have mirror wall finish in graduated % just like we have transparency in SL. My Japanese house in Moove has wonderful full mirror walls, reflecting totally like mirror glass, in shaded colors and textures, so WHY cannot SL do this? No answer is ever given.

Also why isnt transparency graduated, like form one corner to another, or rarial, linear etc.... this would be incredibly useful.
