Auto-Announce Events

Events could be announced automatically a few minutes before they occur.

This would:
Slightly lower Linden workload
Increase attendance at event
Lower event holders frustration
Allow events to be announced 24/7

There should probably be a review screen for events so a Linden can approve an event for announcment. This should greatly lower the amount of time spent messing with event announcements.

Adding an option in preferences to turn off event announcements would make some people happy.

As opposed to Haney announcing Misty's event 35 minutes into a half hour event, you mean?

Good idea.

Hehe, Kris, you noticed that as well? I like the auto announce, and the turn off event announcement idea as well. Perhaps The Lindens could form some sort of Advocate Program. The Second Life Civil Information Council. A voluntary postion held by residents, requiring them to donate say, 2 hrs a week in welcome areas, like a mentor, and they could also help handle the announcement traffic as well. Communicate between themselves and The Lindens via an advocates chat channel or group. And yes, I am aware of the current mentor program, just as I am aware of how hard it is to find one when you need one ;)

Capital idea, Tock. And while we're at it, what's up with this new competitive/skill requirement for Events? Thus, it seems to me that there is a need to have event classification checkboxes linked to the existing Category drop-down menu:

1. Fully funded/competitive with auto-alert
2. Partially funded/non-competitive with optional auto-alert
3. Non-funded/get-to-gethers (e.g., meet n greets and raffles) with no alert but listed on calendar.

Alternately, to reduce cheating, these classifications could be set and displayed when a Category menu item is selected.

I kinda get the reasons why LL has made the policy change, but it doesn't take into account the differing goals of various event types. Forcing an event to adopt a competitive aspect doesn't lend well to the idea that SL is what you want it to be.

Further, classifying your event as 1 or 2, above, would initiate the standard LL review process, whereas 3 would not. I just think the current system implements an undue and arbitrary roadblock to those who want to host events, but either don't want to or know how to run a skill-based contest.

Everything I list there. :)
