Weird title, but I was looking for a script completely unrelated to this topic and was alermed at how many Real Life Average Height Avatars were Banned, Warned, or Threatened based on their Height.
I do so enjoy accuracy from time to time and try to make Avatars within a Real Life Female Human Height Range. However, current height meassureing devices (not made by Linden Labs) will give three heights. The shortest will read 5'2" (average height of a Female in the 80's in the United States up until there was a trend in wearing high heeled Platforms while haveing your height taken in the 90's), while another will say 5'8" or 5'9" and the third I believe was even taller then that... maybe 6'1".
It would be nice for both Accuracy and to reduce the unintentional gaps between avatar heights.
This would help in what SL considers actual height and hopefully make avatars closer in height,...

Title?

I think it'd be nice if they could build a height indicator INTO the appearance system for when you edit shapes, as moving the height slider does NOT control all aspects of avatar height, and the non linden rulers often show an "average" avatar at well over 6 feet,m sometimes over 7..
I've had avatars that where over five feet tall that folks assumed where children due to tehir enormous size.
(waves to Kitty, decided to post this in here as well)

I wander around as a 30 foot long dragon. I constantly surprise myself when I encounter a "normal height" av and think, "holy crap they're tiny!"

Take off your shoes (needed) use the scripted object. make a prim that same length see if its really close to the height of your avatar I have 2 scripts they are one inch different. Becuase of the way the one rounds when converting meters to Inches.

Nope,.. completely shoeless, no prims on feet, no shoe clothes item,..
... stand there and click through different height detectors, rulers, height meassurement (objects) and they are all different.
There is one that is based on the system for prim and at about 5'8" (in relation to prims) I have had people guess I am 2-3 feet. Their avatars are not realistic but they have no clue how tall their avatars are, they only know they bought their shape. There is no solid height system for people to accept universally so I have run across people selling shapes where the females are half the height of the males (buyer beware, people are now hunting down short avatars and trying to set them up and get them banned or atleast harassing them as a hobby/game).
It may also do some good if SL would make clarifications, for insistence there are people that think all child avatars are now against rules period. But that's not the subject of this.

I would /really/ love to see a indication of height on the slider that lets you know how tall you are. Most of my 'human' avatar forms are going to be 6' or less in the first place, and it'd remove the step of having to get out the AV Ruler every time I set up a new look.
My main height problem at this time is pixies - how to make a form significantly smaller then an adult human, but have the proportions correctly resemble a small adult instead of either a human child or an alien.

Avatar Rulers, side note ish
06-02-2007 22:09
I have three rulers the one that is closest to the actual prim sizes and meters to feet conversions shows MUCH taller than the "avatar ruler" or the other height detector.
My av is 5'5" on the ruler and 6'0" on the Starscape Judge(height). Btw it resizes to the height it reads and it was the correct size in prim meters, I checked conversion charts and it's actually still low from meters to feet. The Shape system apears to be over sized, either that or they meant yards not meters...
Basically the Height detectors vary, and the sl shape system is over large compared with prims, unless the prims are actually in yards in proportion with the avatar rather than meters.
It would be great to know what the Lindens measurements for height are.

From: Draco18s Majestic I wander around as a 30 foot long dragon. I constantly surprise myself when I encounter a "normal height" av and think, "holy crap they're tiny!" I've recently made myself a nice shiny new renamon-based av, but renas are generally taller than humans so I'm above average height. Besides, height isn't a very good indication of overall avatar size. I could wear a 10m tall hat, and 10m tall platform shoes but be 3'2"

Besides, height isn't a very good indication of overall avatar size. I could wear a 10m tall hat, and 10m tall platform shoes but be 3'2" The way things work you'd either be overlaped shoes and hat or your shoes would be completely underground. You can only lift your avatar so many inches in height as far as the shoe layer of clothes will allow (most height meassureing items could that, but none of your prims EVER count) or if your avatar was a floating doll you displace from your invisiable avatar body... but again the prims height and how far from your body do not count. I think both of you are proving there is relativity in size, don't you. Currently that is the only logic Lindens could be in banning people. Which gets back to the height meassurement thing,... detail oriented people are makeing avatars a realistic height based on what Height Meassurement devices they can find... if another human avatar come up to them who is 9 feet tall on the system... the person that looks half their height IS NOT TRYING TO LOOK 2-3 FEET TALL... it's actually the human looking 9 feet tall that is makeing a relative issue (which Lindens should be able to see in shape, but they have nothing to check with). There are alot of jerks going around attacking and disrupting in their ways and there are also alot of people trying to go report hapy and get as many people in trouble as they can. There are types createing situations to make illusions to try to get people banned. And the Invisiable Avatars with no name tags that can force gestures on people or atleast force their avatar to attract to a spot are getting annoying. Relativity would not be as big of an issues if the people that make Shapes were really told by Linden what range they should be trying for plus the people that make their own would have the same range. I in no way want Prim Avatars or unusual avatars to vanish, but a system everyone could follow and especially if Lindens could atleast tell whose too tall or too short in data receieve instead of falling for optical illusions would be helpful. Currently there are too many systems and squabbleing. Plus with the trigger happy and the attacks, Lindens are complaining to and citizens are threatening the wrong people -- people in Average Human Height range according to Real Life and the meassurement systems.

Kitty don;t forget aos, macro furry, mecha avatars AND large dragons all function via an ao. so the avatar inside is still only as tall as an sl avatar allows.
Aside from that, if you are 3'2" and where a ten meter hat, you are still 3'2" with aten meter hat on.

Don't allow AV's to be under a certain height in Mature areas.
If two adult AV's want to dress up as children etc. and participate in agesex, thats fine, but then the press won't have screenshots of childsex to publicise.
What height? My female avatar is 5' 4" (if I recall exactly) without shoes - and looks like a kid next to 'normal' avatar heights. My male avatar is 6' 2" or so and STILL looks short next to people.
The 'normal' height should be determined before any of this is decided..

Well there is a universal system , since prims allow you to state exactly, in meters, their dimensions. So any Av measuring system should match that.

So any Av measuring system should match that. The most common ones do NOT. the system I have that does is still slightly off to the smaller size, and according to it all avatars are BIG compared with supposed prim meters. Unless the meters in sl are actually yards, then avatar proportions while still on the large size would closer to what they look like..

I'm 1.8 meters (5'10"
06-03-2007 15:34
I measured myself using a phantom prim I could walk inside of. It measures 1.8 meters when I'm barefoot. That's about average for a real life woman in the US or maybe even a little on the tall side. But I'm amazed at how everyone TOWERS over me like giants, men and women both.
I've never been banned from anything, but I have gotten asked my real life age a lot. I can't figure that one out! The hardest thing may be interacting with other avatars for dances, hand holding, etc.
I suppose I could change myself and get a taller shape or make the one I have a little taller, but I like it the way I am. I identify with it now and have adjusted all my clothes and so forth. It's not a huge problem -- pun intended. KC.

Admittedly I don't wander the grid much, tending to only stay in the few areas that are interesting to me, but I have yet to hear in-world of any actual occurrence of people caring even the slightest about an avatar's height.

Well I heard things about those problems and I have been harassed before,.. but I oddly found threads about people being banned or getting in trouble while searching for terms that shouldn't be related. I was trying to find some scripts or help with them for a friend. I'll try finding one with one of the term searches I can remember but things keep getting moved and stuff I noticed. /327/19/186004/1.htmlTry doing searches /invalid_link.htmlAnd please remember, people of Second Life are confused about "AgePlay" as it has many meanings (people are harassing child avatars for "AgePlay" because they are playing children :/ They are also bothering people under their avatar's height, even if it's 8 feet). I hate when sites and games do this but at this rate Second Life is going to have to make a special phrase or word for Child, Tween, and Teen avatars engaged in a sexual act. (Not like that will help since people already can't tell the differences between a WereWolf Avatar, a Bugs Bunny Avatar, and a Domestic Cat Quadpod/pad Avatar).

I would also like some examples of where this is happening. I prefer to be a short female in SL as I am in RL, and the idea of being discriminated against because of my height, of all the stupid things, is rather appalling. On another note - with all the huge avatars out there roaming the grid, I am completely redoing my store because I realized that some folks - especially those of the dragon persuasion - couldn't fit through the doorways!

Admittedly I don't wander the grid much, tending to only stay in the few areas that are interesting to me, but I have yet to hear in-world of any actual occurrence of people caring even the slightest about an avatar's height. Yes it really IS happening! It has happened to me on numerous occasions. If you read my profile, my avatar is based on a real life woman who is 4ft tall and 50 years old. She is mistaken for a child in RL all the time. At least in RL that mostly is just embarrassing. In SL people just assume that your AV is a child therefore you are making "child porn" somehow and WHAM! I can understand this happening in some BDSM dungeon, but in a clothing mall? Yes I was actually tossed from a clothing store supposedly selling women's clothing without any warning! This was not just a griefer since I was banned by the owner! Actually the sex oriented locations are usually pretty explicit in what they will allow and what they won't. In addition, any time I have IMed the owner they have been very helpful - I even got special permission to go into a RP "high school". I will send you some the scripts if you IM me in world! For what it is worth discrimination based on height is unlawful in California - LL HQ - but I have yet to see any action taken on my abuse reports. When I pointed this out to Robin Linden she responded "this is a business, not a democracy - live with it or leave". As a result of all this harassment I have cut way back on my SL time and plans, when I am around then I use something vanilla like "Ruth". Sigh.

Thank you for posting Karen. I don't know how to explain one problem with finding examples is once people are banned from Sites or Games they aren't around any more (if even allowed to exsist). Some where bounceing around I found some transcripts from Robin Linden in a meeting with people freaking out about the new rules. In that Robin basically said anyone can be banned just because someone reports an accusation. The person banned then needs to prove they are an adult,.. which on some places online power hungry people flood underaged reports on anyone they want to get rid of,... I have had to deal with being Banned/Suspended before because of these so I know these things. 1. It's a long process. 2. People will impersonate staff demanding you send things to them instead or as well. 3. Some places demand a long expensive process that can cost 50-250 dollars. ... I'll try to find it again,.. but since these things come up when I'm not searching for them... it will be searching for them when they don't come up. I think this is the one /327/2b/170380/1.html

I could wear a 10m tall hat, and 10m tall platform shoes but be 3'2" True enough, but you, while looking very tall and skinny, would only be 3'2" whereas I actually feel like I'm 30 feet long--no hats here. (Default camera position almost has me looking up my own tailpipe. Almost, if it were "slightly below" the avatar as much as it is "slightly above" then yes. I HAVE to zoom out, as my av takes up at least half my screen.)

Lol, I can't believe this person actualy kicked out an old lady. This store owner should be ashamed of him/herself. Granny wouldn't like that! Anyways my av is short, 5' without shoes on and I'm going to be damned if i'm going to be a 7' tall heffer just cause someone thinks being short means you're a kid. Idiots! What is the name of this store so I can stear clear of it and not buy anything of thier stuff for discriminating against small people. Midgets of the world we must unite to fight this tyrany! I even have a midget shape I made up. lol, kinda reminds of that show Little people, big world. I bet they wouldn't enjoy being booted for being short! Also having a child like av is not bad, just doing bad things in your child like av is so don't be afraid to look like a child, just be afraid to do anything naughty in it hugging cause of the awful morality police are out and they are proudly displaying thier tin-star badges and are wrong themselves.

Many of us agree that the core problem behind all this (and other height related issues) is that 90% of the residents don't know how tall their avatar actually is, or at least, did not know during the critical moments of avatar creation and then built the rest of their SL life upon this initial and erroneous measurement.
A new request has been added to the feature voting system (VWR-1094) for making the height slider tell what the avatar's height actually is.
Please vote on this if the issue is of interest to you.
