What would be the consequence of unrestrained, widely adopted, and very well written landbots?
They might be great for buying stuff, but the stuff they buy has to earn an income by being sold or rented or serving as a base for a store or other income generating activity, or the bot operators are just buying land as a hobby instead of a business.

From: Lex Neva Hmm, or a camping chair, maybe... Rewarding camp chair sitters with porn pictures in return for helping defeat anti-bot schemes. And maybe reward them for assisiting in other, perhaps even shadier activities as well. Now, there's an idea for a secondlife.com front page advertising puff piece.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville Robin Linden suggests a new feature will be added to make it more difficult to buy land using landbots.
What do you suppose this protection scheme will involve? I have no idea what they will do, but I do know what I would _like_ to see. When selling land add an additional choice to the "sell to anyone" or "sell to xxxx" options - "auction land". Allow everyone to bid on your land for sale instead of outright sell it for a specific price.

I didn't see anything there that really described how that actually works, but one thing that I came up with (but never implemented yet) for a web-site thing I was doing was picture analysis. Basically, whenever authentication is required, a window pops with three images, below these are three lines of text each with a text field to fill in and read as follows: There are _____ cats in the first picture There are _____ dogs in the second picture There are _____ tins of beans in the third picture The images are photographs of the real thing, and the user has to count how many of the key item are in each picture, and enter the number. This of course requires a set of images and a mapping to the right answer, so is more work than pilfering a common CAPTCHA generator. However, due to the much more complex nature of the pictures it is a lot harder for a bot to analyse, especially if the images are in a variety of different lighting conditions, varied subject matter (e.g different coloured dogs) and so-on.

One method of preventing sales to bots by those so desiring would be to have a "To Purchase Contact Owner" option - the potential buyer would still get to see a price and the land would show up in search, but the customer would have to contact the owner and the owner would have to take an action in order for the sale to take place.

Generally speaking sellers don't care who buys their land. Only other buyers care about this nonsense. Who in their right mind would select this option?

From: someone What do you suppose this protection scheme will involve? I think it has something to do with Havok 2, or Mono, or a permissions system overhaul. One of those, I think.

From: Haravikk Mistral I didn't see anything there that really described how that actually works From what I was able to understand is that a series of 9 images are shown in a 3x3 grid, some cats, some not. The user would then click on the three images that are cats to continue (or otherwise identify which squares had cats).

Thats not quite true - I had some nice parcel of land which I didnt want to give to "land traders". Finally a friend of mine buyed it - and I was really happy about that.
