Let's just all join hands around the world, share a Coke and a smile, and sing, "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing..." at the same time on forums and in-world someday, shall we? It would be preferable to the currently deplorable state to which the forums have degenerated.

Hmmm, people have walked across SL, but I wonder if it would be possible to do a human... er, make that avatar chain that stretches across the main continent? I think that would be cool."
Beryl Greenacre

Oh yeah - it's possible! Inspired by Bery, I'm gonna throw my stipes in the ring and start organizing this event.

Event Day - On the 3rd SL Anniversary in June (when is that again?) (I'll update here in msg. #1 & Msg. #2)
Event Time: Grid friendly for all of SL - which seems is 24 hours continuous event!

Route: Suggestions welcome.

Sim Limits: Testing an spiffy attachment that need less than 8 people to cross a sim.

----------------------- CheerLeader Section ---------------

Let's have Hands Across Second Life informational events - and promotions. I'll do some once we get more details organized.

Let's see action - let's see people - let's see -

Tee-Shirts, Balloons, Hand-to-Hand Gifts, Big HANDS, Happy Hands, Silly Hands

Colorful Hands - Black, White, Rainbow Hands - Hands Prims, Hands Builds, AreoPlanes and Boats, and even Ice Cream Float Hands!

Gorgeous beautifully inspired joyous people - joining Hands Across Second Life!

May the Gird vibrate in ecstatic celebrations - on the 3rd Birthday of Second Life - June 23, 2005!

Oh yeah!

:D :D :D :D :D :D :)

Event Updates - #1 - #2 (Sat. 5/28)
05-19-2005 10:34
Reserved space for Event Updates:

Anyone? Still have not receive any submissions - are there no hands-makers willing to help?

#2- Things We Need: (Also posted at Msg. #44 Below)

RFS - Request for Submissions: The Official Hand to be used for the HANDS ACROSS SL Celebration!

Calling all Sculptures, AV-Artists, ANIMA-Wizards, and all creative souls throughout the land! Hear Yea, Hear Yea!

We need your talents and your helping hands!

Submit your vision of a HAND(S) Attachment that can be worn on our AV which is large enough to be seen clearly from above. One Hand or Hands will be chosen as the Official Logo-Attachment for the Hands Across SL Celebration on June 23, 2005 - the 3rd Birthday of Second Life.

So get busy making your HANDS - lots of designs, types, colors - Thumbs Up, OK signs, High Fives, Hand Grasped In Friendship, Hands of Joy, Full Hands, Zen Hands, Power Hands, Fiery Hands, etc. etc.

Please either drop 'em on me inWorld or send me an IM and I'll come to you and see what ya got.

(I have this vision of seeing these hands from above - so the Areo folks may wanna jump on board with Blimps and Ballons and other flying/floating/soaring vehicles for people's view pleasure).

----
#1- Particle-Attachment Creating the AV-Chain: (have been testing, still working on it)

Jillian Callahan is testing and I'll also be testing idea to work around the number of AV's per sim limit:

An object that attaches at an AV, and if a person wearing one clicks on the object worn by another and is standing within 5 meters, it starts a particle stream to that other person's attachment. This makes it possible to have a long string of people linked with particles so the full sim won't be so much of a problem.

According to Jillian's primality tests - 4/5 AV's per sim is all that is needed. It has been tested to a 70 meters distant - so if we have 5 or more people per sim, one every 64 meters, that should be enough.

Each person with the particle-attachments could also have custom head Hands-Across-SL objects that would look cool from above - as well as others in the sim. (Hands pointed to the AV-particle chain along the route, Smiley-Faces with Hands as Ears, hand flags, hands-at-work, hands-doing-jobs, etc. etc. (got your attention now? lol )

If you start at the far north, down to Purple, across west to Indigo, you can shoot straight down to the far south.... the question it, which northeastern tier do you take from there?

I wonder what the actual percentage of people who are in SL actually post/read the forums. I generally see the same names over and over. Getting together people to do something like this would be a neat thing to do, so I guess in world word of mouth would need to happen in order for it to work well. I'd like to see something that brings people together happen.

The third-year anniversary of SL going public is June 23rd, I believe. This is great, Merwan, I hope this event attracts a lot of diverse people to participate. :)

My estimation? About 5% of the SL population are readers/lurkers, and a bit less are "regular" posters (ie. over 10 posts a month or so).

I think that the number is slowly dropping and will continue to drop as the SL population grows. The newer generation is really not interested in "forum drama", which you can get at any forum/mailing-list/IRC channel/whatever. They're really interested in what SL has best: a 3D virtual world for us to build and share :)

Sometimes we forget about that very easily.

I can help spread the word, however, how will this work with a 40 av limit in sims and the lag so awful with 40 avs, that they would have a hell of a time lining up?

Maybe a big, smiley face made out of avs on a private island....

Or engineer big smiley face Hands that individual AV's can wear on their heads that can then be seen from above. If the circles were large enough and placed end to end then you would have the joining hands effect, as well as the chain of green dots on the map.

Ahh..good idea!

That would definitely take care of the blanks between avs and make for damn good map screenshots or ariel views.

How about making promotional items for this? Like t-shirts with the date, time, etc. once its all ironed out that people can copy and transfer to their friends.

I'm willing to volunteer to make a logo or mockup if you like.

Or, even better, how about an event for best logo? Winner by general vote gets their logo used in the promotional t-shirt (or whatever). Making it an event will help spread the word as well to the general populace.

Anything I can do to help let me know. (PS I'm not that hot at making clothing)

Would it help everyone lining up to use pose balls (minus the show/hide listens) or something like taht modeling pose stand I've seen all over?

If they were linked in strings ... and pre-placed .. then lining up wouldn't be a problem .. just grab the next available slot you can see

Is that workable? :)

yeah merwan, i think the avatar-in-sim limit will keep this from happening hand-in-hand but i wonder.... i wonder if each person puts a 10m arm extender on each arm, so that people are connected 20m apart, if this could work? lol

or you could set up particle connectors between people -- i don't know what the distance limits on those are.

(although i think walks across the world are more fun because of the joint experience of exploration)

Awesome Idea

Merwan...

Absolutely fantastic idea! If we get the Spellbound people involved they have great means of getting information out and helping with large scale events. Also if there is a Linden that handles events, as well as Hamlet that covers events then this could be a Linden assisted event in that they could put info on the website. I imagine they are already planning some anniversary type events of their own too. Just a thought to give the powers that be a call if there is a liaison for events. I'm happy to help where I can!

I have land at 3 telehubs, I will gladly advertise any info nessessary to help make this event a memerable one.

I like the idea of a contest for the shirts and stuff.
lets get that going- everyone who reads the forums make your own shirt, jacket, clothing items and we will organize a contest the top 10 will be used for the event? male and female

also items like buttons, hats, signs, and the hands mentioned would be a good addition.

lets try to have all products finished by the end of the month (tuesday may 31)

sounds like a terrific event lets make it work! starting with a contest!

Many sims are full with 30, and apparently we cannot tp in to get around that now. I liked the parade last year..why not another?

What about hand in "leash"?
05-19-2005 12:18
Seen alot of items that have "leashes" while i know the mature community uses them heavily I think this would be a perfect example of a way to "link" people together as you are trying to do?

Edit: Now that I think about it sounds like te "Happy peson" protest more but still maybe something like that?

It would take a bit of working out but a diagonal route across at least some of the sims might not require quite so many AV's.

Maybe it's a dumb idea but hey, I want this to work. :D

Great idea, Merwan - I especially love the map aspect. The whole thing is excellent! We could do like the classic box-on-the-head but just make our boxes large so we look like a huge string of beads from above... whatever you decide I'll be there.

You could use canes or scarves I suppose to extend the hands...but where do you get hand-holding poses in SL?

Sounds cool.
