In-world Community Team Roundtable Meeting - October 5, 2005 - 9am

Lindens in attendance: Blue, Pathfinder, Ethan, Jeska (arrived after
meeting officially ended because of illness but stayed late to chat
with people)

SUMMARY:

Our second Community Team Roundtable Meeting was held at 9am to better
facilitate Residents living in European timezones. 16 Residents
attended, and a soapbox script (thank you Eloise) was successfully
used to give Residents interested in "having the floor" an
uninterrupted time to share their ideas.

The main topics covered were:

1) Teen Amnesty Week

Blue shared a lot of information about Teen Amnesty Week
(/3/a9/63722/1.html). On the day
this was announced, 10 teens contacted Blue for amnesty, and since
then there have been 4-8 teens applying each day. Tomorrow (Oct 6) it
will be announced as the Message of the Day (MOTD). Blue also
explained how important it is for LL to keep adults off the teen grid
as well as keeping teens off the main grid. He also mentioned how
teens who turn 18 are transferred to the main grid, and that 24% of
them feel this is very distruptive. However, the majority of teens
cannot wait to get access to the main grid when they come of age, and
most of them keep in contact with their SL teen friends via AIM or
Skype or blogs.

TO-DO FOR THE COMMUNITY TEAM: Keep Residents aware of the Teen Grid
policies, and direct specific queries about the Teen Grid to Blue.
Please inform Pathfinder of any teen SL blogs to index on
http://del.icio.us/secondlife/teen as a way to help teens keep in
touch with each other.

2) The LindeX currency exchange

Pathfinder explained that the beta testing of the LindeX is going
strong (https://secondlife.com/currency/) and that LL is working to
fully open it up ASAP. Once this happens, Philip will hold a Town
Hall to explain all the details of the Lindex. However, in the
meantime there have been some fundamental misconceptions on how the
LindeX operates. Pathfinder reiterated 3 key points:

#1) LL is NOT going to set the price of Lindens on the LindeX. LL
will simply be matching up ppl who want to sell with ppl who want to
buy. The market will decide the price.

#2) LL is NOT printing $L and selling them on the LindeX. LL is
simply providing a liquid market where buyers and sellers connect.

#3) LL is charging a fee for LindeX transaction to cover the
ever-present cost of chargeback fraud on credit cards.

People with additional detailed questions about the LindeX were
encouraged to submit questions to Philip when the Town Hall is
announced in the near future.

TO-DO FOR THE COMMUNITY TEAM: When LindeX goes live, announce Town
Hall with Philip and create thread in forums where Residents can
submit specific questions to Philip as early as possible.

3) More ideas on better ways for LL to distribute information

Most of the discussion was focused on this last topic. Pathfinder
explained the current ways LL distributes information to Residents
(website, email lists, MOTD, inworld kiosks, InfoNet) and described a
new project to potentially put up "newspaper stand" areas around SL to
better support distributing information through existing Resident-run
systems (e.g., inworld newspapers, InfoNet). If anyone has
information about new and helpful Resident-run systems for inworld
information distribution, please share them with Pathfinder.

Video Tutorials have been set up in the Welcome Area, and Residents
who have checked them out find them very useful. People also agreed
that once we get HTML on a prim, there will be much more potential to
share information inworld in a distributed model.

Other compelling new ways to distribute or find inworld information
mentioned were:

1) Skywriting!
2) Creating a new and dedicated sim for information distribution
called "HELP" or "Information" or "Library" to be a central place for
LL distibuted content as well as helpful information created by
Residents. Make sure to get Residents with existing Library projects
involved!
3) Fix the MOTD so that it is an entire screen of information with
clickable URLs
4) Change the "last image from the world" on the client to a screen
with helpful information
5) More videos!
6) Create a more "general help" wiki with better organization tools
(e.g., stickies) to keep people from asking the same questions
7) Make notecards globally searchable, with notecard creators being
able choose whether or not they want their notecards indexed and
publically available.
8) A built-in Dayplanner for each Resident to help them keep track of
events and classes they want to attend
9) A way for Residents to provide their interests and then
automatically match them with in-world events
10) A more "Google-esque" interface to finding things inworld...using
meta-tags

TO-DO FOR THE COMMUNITY TEAM: Some ideas heard before were raised
again as well as some completely new ones. The Community Team will
further investigate these ideas and keep everyone updated on progress,
both short and long term.

Final Thoughts: This was a great meeting. A chance to share
information and ideas between Residents and Community Team Lindens, as
well as a fun opportunity to just get to know each other better. The
Soapbox system worked well and we plan to use the script from now on
to better organize the discussion. It was noted that 9am SLT is 5pm
for Residents in the UK, which makes it difficult for them to attend
on a workday. In the future we will have our "European Timezone"
meetings at 10am SLT to give people in the UK ample time to get home
from work and log in.

Take care,
-Pathfinder Linden

Excellent RR, browsed the transcript, and it indeed looked like a productive meeting.

Dang! Just today I was looking at the notes of the previous meeting, and checked announcements, thinking it was about time for another of these. Where do they get announced?

It was also listed in EVENTS. The meeting next month will rotate back to being in the evening SLT.
