This is a snipet from the Logathon post.
From: someone
Just for participating, all residents (including the teens) will receive an in-world Second Life Benshee, a personalized in-world primitive pet that interacts with other Benshees it meets.

So, what is a Benshee? What will it look like? How will it be personalized? How does it interact with other benshees? Will we have to deal with baby benshees at some point?

Through completely paranoid and imaginary sources, I have determined that the benshee is a sophisticated tracking device. It tells other benshees what you like to do in your free time and when we log off they gather deep under Liaison Land with King Benshee to reveal your inner most secrets. It will be common and customary to "pay off" other benshees to keep quiet.

Even so, Im excited and look forward to getting my benshee. I am already writing a notecard on training them to work for us and not against us. I am also planning on opening a benshee obedience school.

What are your thoughts on the Benshee craze that we are about to encounter?

I'm wondering if they developed it off the old Hippos. And how the Hippos would interact with other Hippos. I still have my Hippo by the way. :D

I can't wait to see what this Benshee looks like though!

This is what's creepy.

The Benshee is a .5m tall version of Ben Linden. Thus the grid will be awash in 5000 or more tiny Ben Linden simulacrums.

Are we scared yet?

I am.

Naw... I'd only be scared if there were 5000 tiny Bub Lindens running around. Now THAT's something to fear.

No, scary would be to have a 3d version of the Creature's 2 Norn following you around, saying either "Eeem boop" or "Bloop very hungry" while carrying around the food that they want. And they'd breed when they came into contact with other Benshees, so you'd have at least 20 of the stupid things running after you.

Oh, crap.. gave myself an idea of what I'm gonna design. Just gotta find someone who can teach me to script. FEAR ME!!!

I guess I am out of the loop, but who the heck is Bub?

I hear everyone talking about what a God he is, but I don't get what's so special.

He woke me up in the middle of the night a couple of days ago with an errant message intended for Blue (no idea why I would have got it), and he didn't even offer a Teddy Bear for my troubles!

Bah to Bub I say!
Bah!

Hmmm, so many questions are begging to be asked.... according to legend, a banshee is a spirit that wails to warn of impending death. So why give it a name so close to that? Could it be that this thing monitors our activities and sets off an alarm to warn us when we're about to be suspended or banned? Hmmm! Watch out if yours suddenly starts howling at you! And 'interacts,' umm hmm... watches everything I do and reports anything that makes it suspicious, more like. I'm wise to this!

On a lighter note, how do we personalize them? Can I change mine to a funky combination of colors and give it a cutesy name? Will there be little outfits for them, like there are for the Tinies?

5000 mini Bubs would be impractical. The asset server could not handle that many tiny little bazookas calling llRezObject every five seconds. We've been spared thanks to technical limitations.

This time.

Oooh, that would end the need for a Login-a-thon!!!! Thus, no little Buds.. Gotta love paradox!

Seriously, I'd love to know more about these possibly cute and more likely dangerous creatures!

I was wondering about that too.
As far as I recall, Banshees are supposed to scream and howl non-stop.
I think I'm sticking to my shoulder bunny for now.

Maybe that's one of their 'features'... they're cute, they interact, they scream and howl nonstop! Hours of fun. :p

Yikes, they sound a lot like babies. Babies who monitor your every move! These things are sounding more evil by the minute.

So-- do they come in patterns or colors or something? Can I get a fluffy pink one? :D

Lets hope they are nothing like those Fish that were in SL that followed you everywhere hovering over your head!

LOL.... I'll bet that's *exactly* what they're like! Only now, they report anything suspicious you do, and they scream and howl nonstop! And they're frighteningly cute, like some sort of mutant Pokemon or something. Yaaay! :D

A quick Google turned up:

Thomas Moore

How Oft Has the Benshee Cried
Air — The Dear Black Maid

HOW oft has the Benshee cried,
How oft has death untied
Bright links that Glory wove,
Sweet bonds entwined by Love.
Peace to each manly soul that sleepeth;
Rest to each faithful eye that weepeth;
Long may the fair and brave,
Sigh o'er the hero's grave.

We're fallen upon gloomy days!
Star after star decays.
Every bright name, that shed
Light o'er the land, is fled.
Dark falls the tear of him who mourneth
Lost joy, or hope that ne'er returneth:
But brightly flows the tear,
Wept o'er a hero's bier.

Quench'd are our beacon lights —
Thou, of the Hundred Fights!
Thou, on whose burning tongue
Truth, peace, and freedom hung!
Both mute, — but long as valour shineth,
Or mercy's soul at war repineth,
So long shall Erin's pride
Tell how they lived and died.

They're actually cleverly disguised surveillance devices... they watch you at all times, and if they see you doing something you shouldn't.... oh, hey, is that a Linden coming? I've said too much!

I thought they were some mutant form of Sheep. Thought David might have finally gotten to the Lindens and corrupted them.

So, with inventory sizes becoming a concern the Lindens will be handing out more inventory?

Here's an idea. Let's have a formal Benshee burning. Meet somewhere and stack the things in a pile, set them on (particle) fire and claim we're striking a blow against server bloat :)

I think the Lindens were corrupted long before David got to them (though his influence probably has helped).

:D

I think they are all really "closet comics" and every now and again one of them comes out of the closet and pokes our virtual world with a big funny stick to see if it's still alive.
