I did notice some folks doing some things that were not acceptable for a PG sim. I even took the time to IM them to discuss it. As you'd expect they were a little bit snippy.

Also, Fremont Cunningham was streaming his own video from the event in QuickTime! He had a hardware screen-capture system and was sending the video out from a BSD box. His coverage was really interesting, as he walked around and filmed different people and places. It kept the video fresh and interesting. :)

I'd like to see more of this QuickTime streaming from players.

I can't view the video stream, either, because I have Windows Media Player 10 installed, and it won't let me install WMP 9 since a newer version is already on the computer.

Oh! Izzat why? Well me too, then. That'll be why it's consistently not showing for me in any browser on any computer I can get to. Cuz they all have WMP10 installed.

WTF would they make it only work on older software? o.o

It really needs a human touch. Putting down a visible unmanned camera anywhere attracts morons. A camera operator would be able to adjust shots so as to miss these morons. And of course a human can seek out and shoot the most interesting things around the grid.

I guarantee you before the week is out the live feed will consist of people dancing in front of the camera wearing sandwich board adverts. Prolly noobs being paid to do so.

Agreed.
I tuned in a few times last night and each time there was

*crude sound effects and bad language (sound clips)
*jpeg "billboards" blocking most of the view
*hams showing off their animations at point blank

Also, the chat wasn't visible, so people having a conversation near the camera looked like they were just standing there, typing the air.

Anyone new to the game who saw the video would think the place was either a nuthouse or a poorly supervised junior high lunch room.

I think their best bet is to have Lindens operating (or near) the cameras, and to have more than one of them. That way if anything gets out of hand on one camera they can switch to the other one. (I realize Lindens have the authority to bounce troublemakers too.)

Well I finally found something to play it. There are a bunch of idiots standing round just staring at it as expected.

Funnier than that tho, someone is playing around with it. I can see DOS windows and other task windows being moved around over the video. very professional :p

I have a feature suggestion:

Have Video Linden able to say stuff to inworld from an input box on the webpage, so I can tell this moron just how dumb he looks :p

It's up again. I watched about 5 to 10 minutes of it. It's very boring even though you see chat. Just a constant Crotch-Finder talking and a bunch of folks standing around with "Stop the W-hat oppression" signs. Dunno and don't care much about the W-hat's but I found it annoying.

If I was checking Second Life out for the first time, I wouldn't know what to think. I'd just be irritated that there were people hogging up the camera with whatever in-world issues they've got. Like move already damn it! I wanna closer look of that hot goth chick ... or was that Bub. :p

Yeah, same here. Chaos and non-PG sound clips, lovely. Does make me want to make a sign that says "Oppress w-hat more!" though and dance around the camera..

I think it would be better to have an invisable camera appearing randomly 'cause this is likely going to scare away the folks you want and attract those you don't...

It was novel to stand there and watch myself "on TV" for about ten minutes, but then it sort of devolved into someone putting "silent film placards" in front of the camera, and people trying to see how close they could get to the camera without actually bumping into Video.

For staying power it should probably be an anonymous account, hanging around the welcome area and surrounding Linden-owned sims. If it's going to film over privately-owned PG land I think the big video camera thing should be used, so people realize they are being broadcast.

I don't support the idea of an invisible or anonymous camera outside Linden sims. If people are going to be streamed right to the front page they ought to know about it.

Just rechecked for a second
It seems chat and gui are now visible, and a Linden is present. :)

I think it would be better to have an invisible roaming camera that goes through the PG areas randomly. This way people won't know it's there ansd we will see how the game works as people move about in their normal manners.

That would be cool - but, I'm sure some would object to the 'hidden' nature of the camera.

I really do think a roaming cam would be great and would show off SL much better than a stationary cam.

I was thinking and I got a little idea. If the camera would be hidden and roaming, its presence could be announced everytime it entered a sim. And all residents that were in the sim and enter the sim would get a pop-up saying this sim is the Live-Cam's current location. In one way, they know where the cam is, but not the exact location. So they can choose to be in or out of the Live-Cam's coverage area.

And so that anyone who didn't want the cam to go on their property, there could be an option in Preferences indicating whether or not they would want their parcel to play host to the cam. And there could be a little icon present at the top bar, indicating if the parcel was open to Live-Cam coverage. Like how Unsafe land is indicated now.

Having the cam on resident land probably won't work though considering PG and Mature areas. But for all the Linden owned land out there, could work. It's just an idea. :o

As I and many others have said, one of the best ways to get people to join SL is for them to see it first hand. I think with the advent of the Live Feed this can be done. In fact, I IM'ed my mother and directed her to the site and got her watching the Live Feed with me dancing around with a bowling ball on my head. Strangely that was all the convincing she needed and she has signed up for a free trial.

So the feed has attracted atleast ONE possible new resident. :)

Aww! Your family sounds cute. If I did that bowling ball on head routine, my mom would immediately have me committed. Then declare SL an evil psychedelic cyberdrug. :D

I went to the feed today in the Morris Sandbox. I spent half an hour in front of the camera talking about SL. I pulled out a prim and showed it changing shapes and textures. I showed off one of Cubey's bikes, a bowl I made, the clothes I was wearing from Pixel Dolls, the hair I was wearing from Lil' One, the skin I have from Chip Midnight and a picture of my building that was built by Foolish Frost.

I am urging anyone out there with some free time to go do the same. I really feel this would be more productive than just showing people dancing. At first I even spent some time dancing, it was fun to have my "fifteen minutes". But now that I think about it, wouldn't it be better to show other things about SL?

The most successful software company in the world does a piss-poor job on all these points. Particularly the first three. Why do you expect Linden Labs to do any better?

We need more people to show things other than someone dancing a meter away from the lens, like what is being shown right now.

Someone yelled *STUPID LINDEN!*

*BUMP INTO THE LINDEN!*, and of course, some nimwit complied.

Another guy was rezzing a cube in front of the camera.

Some griefer shooting people.

Welcome to "Growing up Gotti".

:(

This could be a great marketing tool, if used properly.

Heh, when I was home last time I tried to explain SL to my mom and she just sighed and shook her head and said "You live in a different world." :D

Wonderful, wonderful idea, April!

And the best solution I've heard to the problems I have outlined in the SL Herald:

-----------------
· It’s a great idea, and I loved seeing it. But then hearing that it became things that aren’t allowed on a PG Sim - I figure they must not have thought it through very carefully. Surely they didn’t intend that non-PG type things would be right there on the front page for people who aren’t even in the game to view.

I still think it’s a wonderful idea, but not if they are going to do it this way. It’s kind of nuts to ban people for saying the f-word in a PG sim ("some” people, that is) and then feature this sort of thing in a place that truly IS PG; i.e., a web page anyone of any age can easily view.

It goes without saying that I wouldn’t have wanted to join had I seen that first, and I imagine many others we would like to have join would be turned off, too.

coco
------------------

You're right, Mr. F. I watched some of it last night. I was thinking, hey, I can watch people dance without dying of lag! lol

But I was also thinking, gee, this makes it look like a kiddie place, really.

Then I thought, but what could you do NOT to impart that impression? I mean, a still camera, with no commentator. One can't do much with that EXCEPT wait for people to come hang out in front of it doing not much of anything.

coco
----------------

You have come up with a good solution of what you can do not to impart that impression.

I had the chance yesterday to go see what this Video thing was all about. I found Video Linden in Morris taking some video. I thought it would be neat to go up and see my av on the SL homepage. I hadn't been feeling too well and just wanted to have a lil fun. There were about 8 or 9 people...some were just chillin...some were fighting with light sabres..and a few were all up on the camera so only they showed up. I stood to the side because I understand people just want to have fun. Then after a bit I walked around a lil cuz well, I just wanted to see my av on cam..is that so bad? ;P

Video Linden started talking and asked us all to say hello and that the office was watching...it was pretty cool. So then I walked to the far right of the cam view and then had to go afk for like 2 minutes..I came back and there were about 5 ppl causin chaos...3 of them had signs stating "End W-HAT Oppression" and all of a sudden I am sent flying off the sim for no reason. I don't even know where I was. So I teleported back and went back to where I was and said Hi to a few acquaintances. The one of the sign holders who will remain nameless says in chat "Hey Zsu, you are ugly as hell and you need to leave now" (Video Linden at that time had the chat on the live video as well, so I'm sure any decent person who wanted to maybe sign up and saw that could have just said, 'screw that..looks pretty immature here') I don't even know where the hell that came from nor did I know him... I was minding my own business trying to have a lil fun and this asshat comes along. I really don't understand why people feel the need to be that way. I pity them for they feel the only way to make themselves look good is to trash others, no matter if they know them or not. Needless to say..after I was script bounced 4 more times and sent off to another sim...I left. I wasn't in the mood to deal with such immaturity.

I think the video part is a neat idea...untill people like the ones I ran across get involved...

You know I find this all quite amusing considering the rebuttals I received when I asked why was Streaming Video being put in SL before fixing code and bugs.

Now we have the morality squads trying to control the griefing idiots to quel what is being published to the outside world. Ironic that a quote that Catherine Cotton used to have on her signature holds so true at this evolutionary stage of Second Life.

"You laugh at me because I am different, yet I laugh at you because your all the same."

After 32+ months of existance and evaluation of cycles its so funny how things escalate so quickly as the population grows.

When the world was younger and the community was so close knit the cycle of change and the recycle of stupidity was limited as those caught in the first go around learned the first time. Now with the world so large it amazes me how fast those same mistakes are being repeated so quickly by the new populace.

All in all it makes one wonder what was the point of the video if the world is unstable why promote even more of its flaws through video being incorporated.

Anyway, I will go back to the side lines again and keep my mouth shut once more as I sit back and watch the same mistakes being repeated over and over.

Have a nice day.

Sincerely, Shadow Weaver
